McHale Will Teach Rookie Love Tricks Of The Trade

Jun 30, 2008 3:30 AM

Kevin Love has been labeled a young Kevin McHale in the making while in high school and in college, and now he has arrived in Minnesota he will get his opportunity to learn under the master, the Associated Press is reporting.

"He doesn't play like me," McHale said. "Overall, he is much better than I was at 19 as far as shooting and passing are concerned. He has a whole different element to his game that I really like. I could score and defend in the low-post but was more of specialty player overall."

Love hopes McHale will help him in improving his footwork and post moves.

"I was telling my agent, 'Man, I wish I could end up in Minnesota,' because this is where I wanted to be," Love said during a news conference Friday. McHale "mentioned (me) dancing on the ceiling, but it was a little bit more than that. I was so happy to be here."

Love's deep understanding of the game will allow McHale to teach him more advanced tricks that would go lost on a less savvy player.

"It takes months to get good at these things, but we're going to go really slow and show him little things, like how to get the ball in better position," McHale says. "It will be interesting to see how quick of a learner he is."

Neitzel To Play With Wolves In Summer League

Jun 28, 2008 4:10 PM

Former Michigan State guard Drew Neitzel will play with the Timberwolves in the Las Vegas Summer League in mid-July, according to The Detroit Free Press.

Neitzel was on the phone with his agent Doug Neustadt because multiple NBA are teams looking to give him a free agent deal after he was not selected in the 2008 NBA Draft.

"I think it?s a good situation because Minnesota has open roster spots for point guards," Neitzel said. "The summer league will be a good opportunity for me not only to show Minnesota what I can do but the other teams there, as well."

He worked out for a number of teams prior to the draft and participated in the pre-draft camp in Orlando.

"I knew there was a chance I could go late in the second round, or there was a chance I wouldn?t get drafted," Neitzel said. "I didn?t necessarily have my hopes up."

McHale Torn Between Love And Mayo

Jun 26, 2008 10:29 AM

The Minnesota Timberwolves are torn between taking either Kevin Love or O.J. Mayo with the third pick in the NBA Draft, according to The Star-Tribune.

There is some belief that the team will ultimately take Mayo.

"O.J., one of his biggest strengths is his defense, just getting in front of the ball," Assistant General Manager Fred Hoiberg said. "He's got the size to guard [shooting guards] in our league. ... It gives you versatility when you have a couple combo guards on the court together."

However, President Kevin McHale is believed to favor Love.

"You look at Kevin Love with his outside shooting ability, his passing, his competitiveness, and he's won at every level he's been at, as well," Hoiberg said. "So you have guys that have won everywhere they've been in high school and, for [Mayo and Love] just one year in college where they led their teams to good records. So, yeah, we're going to have a tough decision to make."

Heat Not Sold On Beasley

Jun 25, 2008 10:58 PM

Are the Miami Heat looking to trade away from the second overall pick because they are not sold on Michael Beasley, a consensus top two selection?

According to Chad Ford from ESPN.com, Miami president Pat Riley seems to be uncomfortable with Beasley's personality and seems dead set on finding a point guard to pair in the backcourt with Dwyane Wade.

Riley conducted two private workouts on Tuesday - one with Jerryd Bayless from Arizona, and the other with O.J. Mayo, which has received rave reviews of late.

In conjunction with the workouts, the Heat have been actively shopping the second pick in the draft with an eye on selecting Mayo or Bayless lower while acquiring another asset.

Even if no trade is made, Mayo says that he has been told by Riley that he is definitely a possibility to be selected with the second overall pick.

McHale Unsure About Trading Or Keeping Pick

Jun 24, 2008 9:40 AM

Wolves vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale still isn't sure whether he wants to trade or keep the third overall selection in Thursday's NBA Draft, according to The Star-Tribune.

"We're going to get a really good player, no question," McHale said. "There are a lot of good players in this draft. It's a really deep draft. That's why I'm excited about 31 and 34 [their two second-round picks]. We can package those and move up, but the more and more I look at it, we might stay there. There are some really good, interesting players who might drop. It's going to be a fun Thursday night."

McHale admitted that he has a gut feeling about whether he should trade or keep the pick, but wouldn't reveal it to the Star-Tribune.

"I've got one of those. I'm not going to share it with you ... Up until now, there have been a lot of people throwing some stuff out there. It'll get more serious today and tomorrow. On Thursday, you'll get a good offer," McHale said.
