Glen Taylor Announces Wolves No Longer For Sale, Lore/Rodriguez Group Didn't Meet Deadlines

Mar 28, 2024 11:04 AM

Glen Taylor will remain as controlling owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves after Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez did not close on their option by the March 27th deadline.

Lore and Rodriguez agreed to purchase the Wolves in 2021 at a valuation of $1.5 billion. The deal allowed them to purchase 20 percent of the team in July 2021, 20 percent more in 2022 and 40 percent more in 2023.

Lore and Rodriguez were expected to have Dyal Capital Partners finance the final purchase. According to reporting from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the necessary financing had been secured by Lore and Rodriguez, but Taylor contends that they didn't meet contractual deadlines. Wojnarowski also reports that the relationship between Taylor and his successors, Lore and Rodriguez, had disintegrated since they agreed to the sale.

“I will continue to work with Marc, Alex and the rest of the ownership group to ensure our teams have the necessary resources to compete at the highest levels on and off the court,” said Taylor. “The Timberwolves and Lynx are no longer for sale.”

Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic confirmed that Taylor will not put the franchise back up for sale if he retains his controlling interest.

Sources also tell The Athletic that the purchase agreements calls for mediation and arbitration to resolve any disputes. Under terms of the agreement, Lore and Rodriguez will retain the 40 percent of the franchise they have already purchased.

Lore and Rodriguez released the following statement in response:

"We are disappointed with Glen Taylor's public statement today. We have fulfilled our obligations, have all necessary funding and are fully committed to closing our purchase of the team as soon as the NBA completes its approval process. Glen Taylor's statement is an unfortunate case of seller's remorse that is short sighted and disruptive to the team and the fans during a historic winning season."

Former Analyst With Wolves Charged With Stealing 'Strategic NBA Information'

Mar 20, 2024 10:37 PM

An employee of the Minnesota Timberwolves was fired, arrested and charged with felony third-degree burglary for allegedly stealing thousands of internal files, including "strategic NBA information," from a team executive, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday and obtained by ESPN.

The Timberwolves told ESPN that they were aware of the allegations and had no further comment at this time. A source told ESPN that the team would not pursue criminal charges.

Somak Sarkar, 33, who previously served as a coaching analyst for the Timberwolves, is in custody and faces a court hearing Thursday afternoon in Minnesota.

On Feb. 2, the complaint says, Sachin Gupta, a Timberwolves executive vice president who oversees the team's analytics department, left a hard drive connected to a laptop in his office at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis.

That drive contained Gupta's personal financial information as well as private information for the team, including employment and player contracts.

Another employee was able to recover the hard drive from Sarkar, and the team determined, after a forensic analysis, that he had accessed more than 5,000 files and downloaded them onto another device.

Carlyle Group Exits Ahead Of Next Payment For Marc Lore, Alex Rodriguez To Buy Wolves

Mar 19, 2024 10:18 PM

The Carlyle Group has dropped out of financing the next payment by Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez to purchase the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Carlyle had been in talks with the NBA for several months about the possible investment, but were unable to agree to a structure that would be approved by the league.

Glen Taylor said on Tuesday there’s been issues surrounding $300 million of financing for the latest funding round. The deadline for the payment, which will give the duo another 40% bringing them to 80% of the team, is due at the end of March.

“They (Lore and A-Rod) had an equity group that was going to come in and put in $300 million, and that equity group has either withdrawn or the NBA has denied them,” Taylor told reporters. “They have to go out and find new revenue. That I do know.”

Lore and Rodriguez agreed to purchase the Timberwolves for $1.5 billion.

An NBA spokesman said in a statement that the league “did not deny Carlyle’s proposed investment.”
