Anthony Edwards Calls Out Officials After Wolves Beat Thunder

Jan 30, 2024 9:13 AM

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards wasn't in a celebratory mood after his team picked up a big victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Instead, Edwards focused his displeasure on the officials.

"Imma take the fine, because the refs did not give us no calls tonight," Edwards said during an on-court postgame interview with the Wolves local broadcast. "Cheatin' ass refs."

In the locker room, Edwards hadn't let it go.

"The refs was bad tonight. Yeah, they was terrible," Edwards told ESPN without prompting. "We was playing 8-on-5."

Edwards made it clear he wasn't upset with the calls that Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got throughout the game. Instead, the Wolves star was upset with a lack of calls when he felt he was fouled.

"I haven't earned [referees' respect] yet, so it's OK," Edwards said. "But I think tonight was bad from the refs. It was terrible. We didn't get no calls as a team. I got fouled multiple times, and I'm walking up to the ref telling him, 'Hey, can you watch this?' They just shaking their head. Yeah. And then soon somebody come down from their team and get bumped, it's a foul.

"So, I just feel like it wasn't a fair game tonight from the jump. And so, that's why I'm super happy we won the game."

Chris Finch After Karl-Anthony Towns Scores 62: Wolves Played 'Immature Basketball'

Jan 23, 2024 2:06 PM

Karl-Anthony Towns scored a franchise-record 62 points in a 128-125 loss by the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Charlotte Hornets.

Towns had 44 points in the first half, but scored just four points on 2-for-10 shooting in the fourth quarter.

Chris Finch lit into his team after the game, calling it an "absolute disgusting performance of defense and immature basketball." Finch went on to criticize how the Timberwolves responded to Towns' hot start, saying they stopped looking to make the right play.

"I mean there's lots of times when, just because you've scored two or three or four points in a row, or baskets in a row ... you know obviously we're going to try to feed a hot hand, look for a hot hand, but at some point we got to get back to making the right play, we got to get back to doing the right things," Finch said.

Towns finished 21-for-35 from the floor and 10-for-15 on three-pointers.

Anthony Edwards Gripes About Calls Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Gets

Jan 21, 2024 8:23 AM

Anthony Edwards put most of the blame on himself for the Minnesota Timberwolves loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday. But Edwards saved a little for the calls the officials give to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander too.

"It's hard to [contain them] with the calls that Shai gets," Edwards said. "It's hard to shut them down. You can't touch him any time of the game. It's super hard to beat. That team is a good team, especially when they're getting calls like that."

For the game, Gilgeous-Alexander was 12-of-13 from the free throw line.

As for himself, Edwards owned that he needs to take better care of the ball.

"I got to look in the mirror," Edwards said. "Because it's me who generates most of the turnovers. … I'm definitely looking at film trying to figure out what am I doing? The majority come from me trying to make the right play. It's not really there. I'll be better."

Anthony Edwards Has Worked On Drawing Fouls

Jan 14, 2024 9:19 AM

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards was already on his way to stardom. Helping him to get there sooner is learning some tricks of the NBA trade, including foul-drawing.

Edwards is shooting 6.5 free throws per game. That's up from last season's 5.3 free throw attempts a night. Wolves assistant Chris Hines says that's part of what the team has worked on with Edwards. Hines says they want their star "showing his arms" when he drives.

"Now they can see that actual contact on his arms, see the contact on his body and [he understands] that when guys are starting to hit you, it's, 'OK to release now,' " Hines said. "Once guys come into your body, release the pressure instead of keeping going into the pressure."

Minnesota head coach Chris Finch cited Edwards' ability to change pace as a key to his game too.

"Now he's got good patience, changes speeds in the middle of his move, kind of changes directions a little bit more too," Finch said.

Knicks Will 'Always Have Interest In Karl-Anthony Towns'

Jan 3, 2024 1:33 AM

The New York Knicks still have interest in trading for Karl-Anthony Towns, said Shams Charania on FanDuel TV's Run It Back.

"The Knicks have all the flexibility. They maintained all their assets. They have eight first-round picks to trade ... I expect them to prioritize playmaking. They're always going to have interest in Karl-Anthony Towns. Nothing has materialized as of yet.

"They have the pieces, they have the contracts, they have the young players, guys like Quentin Grimes, that you can potentially throw into a trade," said Charania.

It was reported earlier in the season that the Knicks are monitoring Towns' situation, though they have yet to make an offer.

The Knicks also believe they have enough trade assets to bring in another significant player.
