Adelman 'Not Much Truth' To Rumors Of Dislike Of Kahn

Sep 29, 2011 1:37 PM

Unnamed sources claimed Rick Adelman dislikes his new boss David Kahn, general manager of the Timberwolves.

"It just was written -- and I don't know where he came from, and the way he wrote it -- about despising Kahn, or however he put it, it's just not true," said Adelman. "David is the one who actually contacted me and we had numerous conversations about the job. He just said, 'It's going to be a tough job.' Why would you jump into a job like that where you don't get along with the person? I don't know where it came from. I understand things happen, but the fact that I'm here should tell people that there's not that much truth to it."

Adelman talked about how much input he will have in terms of player personnel.

"I think it's going to be good. We talked about that when I talked to David about the job. I talked to Glen [Taylor, the Timberwolves owner], and I talked to David, and I'm pretty assured that I'm going to have a lot of input on the decisions we make. I think that's the way it should be, and that's the way Geoff [Petrie, Kings basketball president] and I worked, too. You have to talk things through, and we were very good at doing that, at listening to each other. And I think from a players' standpoint that you have to see that the front office and ownership and the coach, that everybody is one.

"I'm sure I'm going to have input, but I also understand that my biggest challenge with this job is going to be coaching the team, coaching the players that I have. I certainly would like to have input on all the changes, but I can't get caught up in that when I'm not coaching the team."

Bayno Left Blazers For Job Security With Wolves

Sep 20, 2011 10:45 AM

Bill Bayno decided to leave the Blazers and join the Timberwolves' coaching staff due to the security of a four-year contract.

“We talk all the time about this being a business when players get traded or coaches get fired and its no different in this situation,” Bayno said in an e-mail to The Oregonian. “My first choice was to stay and I did everything in my power to do that. But in the end, I had to take this offer. It was too good to pass up.”

The Blazers, as a general policy, offer assistant coaches one-year deals.

He specifically expressed sadness about leaving coach Nate McMillan.

“It was extremely hard leaving Nate and I really struggled with it,” Bayno said. “I’ve learned so much from him and owe him a great deal of credit for giving me my first chance to coach in the NBA. I truly believe he’s one of the best coaches at any level in the world.”

Telfair Interested In Signing With Mavericks

Sep 16, 2011 10:25 AM

Sebastian Telfair is interested in signing with the Dallas Mavericks.

"I sure do have a list of teams in my mind," Telfair said. "Those teams being one of the teams to make a run for a championship or the teams that are fighting every year for a championship. Seeing Dallas win a championship, congratulations to them, but I'm jealous. I'm extremely jealous. Dallas is definitely on my list. They've got the gold right now. It's not a bad thing in this league to want to go where the gold is. If you can compete and help the team win a championship, that's one of the main focuses in the NBA."

Sources: Kahn Suspected Taylor Might Conduct Secret Search For Replacement

Sep 13, 2011 11:21 AM

Sources: Adelman Troubled By Idea Of Kahn

Sep 13, 2011 11:19 AM

Rick Adelman is the new head coach of the Timberwolves, but it is not the job he preferred.

According to a report, Adelman badly wanted to coach the Lakers and would have been hired by Mitch Kupchak if not the need to defer to the desire for Mike Brown held by Jim Buss.

Minnesota GM David Kahn reached out to Adelman once Kurt Rambis was fired, but Adelman was uninterested.

Adelman knew Kahn from when he was the head coach of the Blazers and Kahn was a sportswriter in the Portland area.

"The idea that a bad sportswriter had turned into a brutal NBA executive troubled him, sources said. He couldn’t stand him then, and had no intention of resurrecting a working relationship with the man," writes Wojnarowski.

Minnesota owner Glen Taylor had to get involved in the recruitment because Adelman wouldn't have taken the job if Kahn's was the only voice he heard.

“Rick would never agree to anything with Kahn,” one league official connected to Adelman said Monday. “This had to be [a deal] with Taylor. …Rick has talked many times of his dislike for Kahn.”

But Adelman has the power of a five-year contract at $5 million per season and will almost certainly outlast Kahn.
