Study: Clippers, Warriors Have NBA's Most Loyal Fans

Jan 28, 2010 11:28 AM

A study designed for The Wall Street Journal by sports-reference.com looked at NBA teams' attendance for the past 10 seasons. It then weighed certain factors like city population, arena capacity, prior winning percentage and whether there are other, competing teams in the same market.

By those measures, Clippers fans are the most devoted, while Golden State Warriors fans are in second place.

Presumably those teams get extra credit for continuing to post relatively strong attendance figures while sporting a combined winning percentage of .399 since the 2000-01 season.

The Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks, who lead the league in fans per game, round out the study's top five, while the Lakers come in sixth. In last place are the Philadelphia 76ers, just ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves and New Jersey Nets.

Wet Floor In Boston Nearly Canceled Game

Jan 26, 2010 7:42 AM

Warm temperatures in Boston caused condensation to form on the floor of the TD Garden during the Celtics' 95-89 win over the Clippers on Monday night.

There was a brief delay as workers mopped the court dry late in the first quarter.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers said the game was nearly stopped because of the condensation.

The issue brought Rivers back to his playing days. While with the Hawks, a game between Atlanta and Boston was halted due to similar conditions. The game was continued a month later.

"The Celtics had the court wet on the Hawks' side, offensively, and got up by 30 and then called the game, which the people in Atlanta thought was very unfair at the time," Rivers said.

"I was nervous, though. I really was. [Referee] Joey [Crawford] was terrific. [Clippers coach] Mike [Dunleavy] and I came together and, at that point, we were very close. If anybody slipped in the next two minutes, the game was over. Joey was going to make that call. Mike said the same thing, we said it almost simultaneously, 'We can't afford a guy to get injured on this floor.'

"We're not used to 55-degree days in January."

Win-Loss Record Will Dictate Camby's Future

Jan 23, 2010 5:26 PM

If the Clippers start losing games, the likelihood of a trade involving center Marcus Camby could increase.

FanHouse reports that Los Angeles will be more apt to consider dealing Camby if their record begins to fall.

The Clippers are five games out of the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference midway through the season.

"Committed at that time," Los Angeles coach Mike Dunleavy said Thursday in reference to a Dec. 26 interview during which he said anyone could be traded on the team's roster.

"But yet I said about all our guys, if a deal comes up that makes sense for us we don't have anybody that's not tradeable ... None of us know what's out there. So I can't say somebody is untradeable, and it won't happen."

Camby is averaging 8.1 points, 11.8 rebounds and 1.98 blocks this season.

Kaman: Gasol Shouldn't Be An All-Star

Jan 22, 2010 8:22 AM

Clippers center Chris Kaman doesn't think Lakers forward Pau Gasol deserves to be in next month's All-Star Game.

"I don't think Gasol should be in it at all," Kaman said when asked if he would be disappointed if Gasol is moved over to backup center when West coaches vote for All-Star reserves. "He's only played like 20 games (he played Thursday in his 25th out of 42 Lakers games) this year. I think there should be a number of games you should play. I think you should have to play like 80 percent of the games.

"It shouldn't be 50 percent (of games a player has logged) over a guy who plays 90 percent and who has better numbers. Not just me. Zach Randolph, a power forward, he has better numbers (than Gasol). But he's not on the Lakers."

Gasol is averaging 16.8 points and 11.1 rebounds to 20.4 points and 9.2 rebounds for Kaman, who has played in 38 of 42 games.

"I don't think he's a center," said Kaman, who added that he also thinks he's more deserving of an All-Star selection than Andrew Bynum.

Carmelo Would 'Love To Have Camby Back'

Jan 21, 2010 1:20 AM

Carmelo Anthony believes the Nuggets are better than they were last season, but that they also can use help in the frontcourt.

Speaking to reporters before the Nuggets' game against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night, Anthony said he'd like to see Nuggets management acquire another big body to augment their frontcourt rotation of starters Anthony, Kenyon Martin, Nene and reserve Chris Andersen.

"I think we are better than last year. That is my opinion," Anthony said. "We only lost Dahntay [Jones], we replaced him with Arron [Afflalo] and a couple other guys. Actually I think we are better than last year.

"But a big guy can always help. But I don't really know who is out there."

Anthony was then told that former teammate Marcus Camby has been on the trading block.

"Camby? Oh shoot, I'd love to have Camby back," he said. "But I don't think that is going to happen. We are not looking for a guy to come in and start. We already have a starting five. And we are almost halfway through the season. So we are not looking for anybody to come in and start or anything like that. But I don't know. I am going to leave that up to the front office."

George Karl doesn't foresee Denver acquiring Camby.

"I don't think Marcus is a guy who would like 15 or 20 minutes," said Karl.  "I don't see that one."

Gordon 'Surprised' By Dunk-In Selection

Jan 16, 2010 9:16 AM

Clippers guard Eric Gordon is surprised that he was selected to participate in next month's dunk-in competition.

Gordon will face off against Raptors rookie DeMar DeRozan at halftime of the annual Rookie-Sophomore Game at All-Star Weekend in Dallas.

"I was kind of surprised," said Gordon. "I'm not really a big-time dunker. I might get one off every other game or something... My family thought I'd be in the 3-point [contest]."

DeRozan was the McDonald's All-American Slam Dunk contest winner in 2008.

"He's super athletic," Gordon said of DeRozan. "That's his type of game. That's what he does best -- dunking."
