Spurs Sign James Anderson

Jul 24, 2010 7:22 PM

The Spurs signed James Anderson, their first-round draft pick, to a rookie contract on Friday.

Anderson can earn about $2.825 million over the first two years of the deal, with team options for the third and fourth seasons.

San Antonio used the 20th pick to select Anderson.

"This is a player who has performed at a very high level for three years at Oklahoma State, yet at the same time just turned 21," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said.

"We get the best of both worlds ? a potential project, as well as someone who has excelled at a very high level in a power conference."

Richard Jefferson will re-sign with the Spurs on Wednesday.

Details of the new deal aren't available, but Jefferson's salary will be well below the $15.2 million he would have made he had not opted out of the final year of his contract.

Jefferson's agent, Todd Eley, explained last month that the forward preferred long-term security over the uncertainty of becoming a free agent next season.

Dallas Close To Signing Mahinmi

Jul 12, 2010 10:09 AM

The Mavericks are close to signing former San Antonio Spurs  center Ian Mahinmi, NBA sources said Sunday.

If the Mavericks secure Mahinmi, who would at the very most require the bi-annual exception of about $1.9 million, it would likely mean that Erick Dampier won't return for the 10-11 season.

Spurs, Heat Unlikely For Shaq

Jul 10, 2010 11:14 PM

Both the Heat and Spurs have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Shaquille O'Neal, but Marc Stein dismisses both as unlikely.

The Spurs don't often take risks like O'Neal in terms of interfering with chemistry and Pat Riley has already worked with him in Miami.

The Mavericks and Hawks are the two teams in the best position to sign O'Neal.
