Mavs Looking For 10th Straight 50-Win Season

Mar 31, 2010 5:38 PM

With a victory over the Grizzlies on Wednesday night, the Mavericks will record their tenth consecutive 50-win season.

Since the NBA expanded to an 82-game schedule in 1967-68, only two teams have reached at least 50 victories 10 or more times in a row.

The Lakers did it 12 straight times 1979-80 through 1990-91 and San Antonio has accomplished the feat 10 straight seasons entering this one.

San Antonio's streak, however, may be in jeopardy.

The Spurs have 44 wins entering Wednesday's action, giving them just nine games to notch six wins.

Popovich: Spurs Have Tough Schedule Ahead

Mar 21, 2010 4:40 PM

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich isn't sure there is a team in the NBA with a tougher schedule leading up to the playoffs.

"I don't know if anyone has a tougher schedule going down the stretch than we do, as far as number of games against playoff teams," Popovich said. "We're going to have to play really well in a very tough West to position ourselves like we want to."

Beginning with the Hawks in Atlanta, San Antonio's next five opponents have a winning percentage of .690.

"We know what's coming,? said guard Manu Ginobili. "We basically have a tough final 15 games. The last 15 are going to be really rough, so it's good to get a good win and time to rest a little bit.

"We've got a really tough back-to-back now, Atlanta and Oklahoma City. Both are really good teams and strong at home, so we're going to have to do very good."

The Spurs entered Sunday's action with a record of 41-26, good for seventh in the Western Conference.

San Antonio defeated Miami 88-76 on Tuesday night.

Manu Ginobili said of San Antonio's defense, which has yet to surrender 100 points this month: "That was as good as it gets."

Spurs May Not Be Able To Sign Splitter

Mar 17, 2010 6:19 AM

One NBA executive doesn't believe that the Spurs will be able to sign former first-round pick Tiago Splitter away from Europe this summer.

Splitter, who was San Antonio's first-round pick in 2007, has an opt-out clause in his contract with Tau Ceramica this summer.

Since he was drafted three years ago, the Spurs could offer the big man above and beyond a typical rookie contract, but they don't have a large amount of cap space.

The San Antonio Express-News writes that the most they could offer will probably be mid-level cap exception, expected to be around $5 million.

With a possible lockout looming in 2011-12, that may not be enough to lure Splitter to the NBA.

"That's why they're probably not going to get him, even for the full mid-level," said the executive. "If you've got a nice, guaranteed deal over in Europe, why would you sign over here and face a lockout? I'm telling you, the full mid-level probably isn't going to get it done."

San Antonio could try to work a sign-and-trade with a team that does have the cap space to give Splitter the kind of deal he's expected to covet.

LeBron Sits Monday Night

Mar 8, 2010 6:50 PM

LeBron James is healthy enough to play if he absolutely necessary.  But with James banged up and the Cavs holding a comfortable lead for the best record in the league, Mike Brown will rest James for the second straight game on Monday night versus the Spurs.

With James sitting out Monday's game, he will be able to get six consecutive days of rest.

"I'm good, I'm good," James said when asked about his right ankle.

James also has a bruised thigh and some back soreness.

Cleveland holds a three-game lead over the Lakers for the top record in the NBA, and the Cavs also own the tiebreaker.

The Cavaliers beat San Antonio, securing their first win without James in several seasons.
