NBA Has Mixed Success With 2019 Opening Night TV Ratings

Oct 23, 2019 9:40 PM

The Toronto Raptors' win over the New Orleans Pelicans averaged a 1.4 rating and 2.25 million viewers, which makes it the smallest Opening Night audience (in the U.S.) since 2007 (Blazers-Spurs: 1.94M; Rockets-Lakers: 2.05M).

The rating excludes the Canadian audience.

The Los Angeles Clippers' win over the Los Angeles Lakers, however, averaged a 2.2 rating and 3.58 million viewers on TNT, which ranks third among Opening Night games since 2013. The 2017 openers — Celtics-Cavaliers (3.3, 5.60M) and Rockets-Warriors (2.6, 4.25M) — hold the top spots.

The NBA also competed against the World Series on their opening night for the first time since 2016.

David Griffin Hopes To Learn From Cleveland Experience To Manage 'Zion Phenomenon'

Oct 23, 2019 12:39 PM

David Griffin hopes to incorporate his experience dealing with a high profile situation as general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers during the tenure of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love to his new job with the New Orleans Pelicans and the budding career of Zion Williamson.

“We are on national TV 30 times this year in large measure because of the Zion phenomenon,” Griffin said. “Having been a part of a team with a phenomenon with LeBron, Kyrie [Irving] and Kevin [Love], it’s certainly been a learning experience that I hope we can utilize. The mistakes we made then, I hope we don’t make now. We didn’t ignore the noise well as a team. There was so much scrutiny that you didn’t know was going to come or proactively prepare for.

“But now we can be in front of a lot of things, although you wouldn’t know it by the way I handled the injury situation. But you control actively being in front of something.”

Clippers, Pelicans Have NBA's Biggest Increases In Secondary Ticket Prices From 18-19

Oct 16, 2019 3:54 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers and New Orleans Pelicans have the biggest average price change for tickets on the secondary market from the 18-19 season to the 19-20 season, according to data from TicketCity.

The Clippers acquired Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in the offseason, while the Pelicans traded away Anthony Davis but won the lottery to draft Zion Williamson. The Clippers have a 114 percent increase in secondary ticket price increase.

The Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat and Miami Heat round out the top-5 in average price change increase.

The Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors rank 30th through 26th, respectively, in average price change decrease. The presence of the Warriors on this side of the ledger is surprising considering they are moving into Chase Center.
