Demetris Nichols Talks With Grizzlies, Others About NBA Return

Jun 30, 2015 10:23 PM

Demetris Nichols — the Euroleague’s reigning leader in three-point shooting percentage — has had discussions with teams, including the Memphis Grizzlies, about a potential NBA return, a league source told RealGM.

Nichols, who played two seasons in the NBA between 2007 and 2009, shot 57.5 percent from three-point range this past season with CSKA Moscow. For Nichols, there is an interest to attempt an NBA comeback from the Euroleague, and some dialogue on the other end. In CSKA's platoon rotations, Nichols scored 4.6 points in 13 minutes per game.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and New Orleans Pelicans have also inquired on Nichols, a source said.

Out of Syracuse, Nichols was the No. 53 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft to the Portland Trail Blazers. The 6-foot-6 guard has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, NBA D-League and several overseas clubs.

Pelicans, Bucks, Knicks Among Interested Teams For Robin Lopez

Jun 30, 2015 7:48 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans, Milwaukee Bucks and New York Knicks are so far among the interested suitors for Portland Trail Blazers free agent Robin Lopez, league sources told RealGM.

Beyond Portland, Lopez is expected to have a list of suitors on July 1, and his connection to Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry has been clear around the NBA. Gentry coached Lopez during the seven-foot center’s first four seasons with the Phoenix Suns.

The Pelicans also are likely to have an interest in Golden State Warriors free agent Leandro Barbosa, whom Gentry’s long coached as an assistant, sources said.

The Blazers will assuredly pursue re-signing Lopez, too. The 27-year-old big man stabilized Portland’s center position over the past two seasons alongside LaMarcus Aldridge, averaging 11.1 points and 8.5 rebounds in 2014-15, and there is believed to be an interest for Lopez to play with Aldridge again next season.

Lopez has spent seven years in the NBA with Phoenix, New Orleans and Portland. He has averaged 8.2 points and 5.1 rebounds for his career — including 11.3 points and 5.6 rebounds in his lone season with the Pelicans.

Report: 76ers Ordered To Send $3M To Pelicans For Not Disclosing Holiday's Injuries

Jun 28, 2015 10:26 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers were ordered to send the New Orleans Pelicans $3 million in compensation for not fully disclosing the injury history of Jrue Holiday, according to sources.

The 76ers traded Holiday on draft night of 2013 to the Pelicans for Nerlens Noel.

The sources said Holiday played with stress fractures in his lower right leg during his final season with the Sixers. However, the sources said, those injuries weren't fully disclosed to the Pelicans.

Sam Hinkie declined to comment, but a Sixers team source disputed the allegation.

"That's not true," the Sixers source said.

According to the other two sources, the Sixers are now trying to receive a payment from the Los Angeles Lakers for allegedly misinforming them about Andrew Bynum.

Mavericks Hire Melvin Hunt As Assistant Coach

Jun 20, 2015 6:18 PM

The Dallas Mavericks have hired Melvin Hunt as an assistant coach.

Hunt was also pursued by the New Orleans Pelicans after the Denver Nuggets decided to hire Mike Malone as head coach.

Hunt took over as the Nuggets' interim coach in early March after Brian Shaw's dismissal and coached Denver to a 10-13 record over its final 23 games, which prompted the likes of Ty Lawson and Kenneth Faried to publicly campaign for him to keep the job full time.

Eric Gordon Exercises $15.5M Player Option With Pelicans

Jun 18, 2015 1:03 PM

Eric Gordon has decided to opt in to the final season of his contract with the New Orleans Pelicans.

RealGM's Shams Charania had reported that Gordon was scouring the potential free agent market while also leaning toward opting in.

Gordon is set to make $15.5 million for the final year of his contract. Gordon was unlikely to match that annual amount on the open market.

Despite missing 21 games with a torn labrum, Gordon put off shoulder surgery to play the final 41 games in the regular season and playoffs. He shot a career-high 44.8 percent from 3-point range, but averaged a career-low 13.4 points in the regular season.

Eric Gordon Scours Market For Possible Deals Despite Expectation To Opt In

Jun 16, 2015 9:46 PM

Despite leaning strongly toward exercising his player option for next season, Eric Gordon has scoured the NBA market for a potential long-term deal out of New Orleans, a league source told RealGM.

Gordon has expressed excitement about the Pelicans’ future, which includes the hiring of Alvin Gentry and his own likely return. The head coach led in the Phoenix Suns’ recruitment to sign Gordon to a free-agent offer sheet in 2012.

In weighing the league landscape, Gordon has looked into four- or five-year contract possibilities with other teams, a source said.

Nevertheless, accepting the $15.5 million option to enter free agency in 2016 has been the expected decision for the 26-year-old guard.

Gordon averaged 13.4 points and 3.8 assists in 61 games last season, a productive yet injury-hampered year. He has spent four of his seven NBA seasons with New Orleans, following a three-year run with the Los Angeles Clippers in which he scored 22.3 points per game in 2010-11.

Eric Gordon Leaning Toward Opting In For $15.5M In 15-16

Jun 18, 2015 1:00 PM

Eric Gordon is leaning toward opting-in to play the final season of his contract with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Gordon is looking to emerge in Alvin Gentry's up-tempo, high-scoring offense that involves ball movement and plenty of perimeter shots from both guard spots.

If Gordon opts in, he is scheduled to make $15.5 million this upcoming season.

When the Phoenix Suns extended Gordon a four-year, $58 million offer sheet when he was a restricted free agent during the summer of 2012, Gentry was the Suns head coach at the time.

After the Pelicans signed Gentry to a four-year, $13.7 million contract on May 30 to replace Monty Williams, Gordon took to social media. He wrote on his Twitter account that he was looking forward to working with Gentry.

Monty Williams Agrees To Join Thunder As Assistant Coach

Jun 2, 2015 11:19 PM

Monty Williams has agreed to become the top assistant for Billy Donovan with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Williams was fired this offseason by the New Orleans Pelicans.

For Donovan, who is transitioning from the University of Florida to the NBA, the securement of Williams stands as the first significant coup of his regime.

Williams is one of the NBA's most well-respected coaches.

Donovan will keep Oklahoma City assistant Mark Bryant and Darko Rajakovic on staff, and likely make former Alabama coach Anthony Grant his No. 3 assistant coach, league sources said.

Pelicans Hoping To Hire Robert Pack

Jun 2, 2015 1:07 PM

The New Orleans Pelicans are hoping to add Robert Pack to their coaching staff.

Pack has been an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2013 after stints with the Los Angeles Clippers and New Orleans. Pack is unlikely to be retained with the Thunder under Scott Brooks.

Pack had a 13-year NBA playing career and was gathering steam as a head coaching candidate while with the Clippers.
