Babcock Return To Wolves Appears Likely

May 31, 2006 6:18 AM

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Rob Babcock attended Tuesday's pre-draft workouts at Target Center, and a front-office position appears to be in his future. Babcock left his post as the Wolves' vice president of player personnel two years ago, when he was hired as general manager of the Toronto Raptors.

"He's helping us out," Wolves general manager Jim Stack said. "It remains to be seen what that's going to germinate into. It's tentative. I think Glen (Taylor, owner) has a good comfort level with him because he's been here for a lot of years. He's a guy we feel we can work easily with, and he's eager to be here, so hopefully it will work out as we go along."

The Raptors fired Babcock in January.

Wally Believes In Casey

May 29, 2006 11:36 AM

While some people blamed Dwane Casey for the Wolves disappointing season, Wally Szczerbiak isn't one of them.

"I don't think there's any coach who prepares you better for a game," Szczerbiak said. "I know he took a lot of heat, especially after the trade, but he'll do a good job in this league for many years to come.

"I had a lot of interest in the Wolves," he said. "My parents found themselves still watching a lot of Timberwolves games. Minnesota will always have a special place in my heart; there's no question about that."

May 25, 2006 10:21 AM

Minnesota's Kevin Garnett reportedly is on the market, writes David Brown of the Northwest Herald.

The Bulls are a team who may be able to put an attractive deal together for the longtime member of the Minnesota Timberwolves.  Out of a group of Luol Deng, Ben Gordon, Andres Nocioni and Kirk Hinrich, at least one player would all but certainly have to be included

"I like our perimeter players," Paxson said. "They're all young, they're all going to get better, they all have a unique talent."

Wolves Name Randy Wittman Assistant Coach

May 22, 2006 12:29 PM

Minnesota Timberwolves Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale announced the team has named Randy Wittman an assistant coach. Wittman spent the 2005-06 campaign as an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic.

"I am tremendously excited to come back to Minnesota and join Dwane Casey's coaching staff and am grateful for this opportunity," Wittman said. "I look forward to working together to get this team back in the playoffs and to develop its corps of young talent in the process."

This is Wittman's third tour with the team. He was with the Timberwolves for five seasons (1994-95 - 1998-99) as an assistant coach before serving as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers for two campaigns (1999-2000 and 2000-01), where he compiled a 62-102 record. Wittman returned to Minnesota and served as a Wolves assistant coach for four seasons (2001-02 - 2004-05) before departing for Orlando. He originally came to Minnesota from the Dallas Mavericks, where he spent the 1993-94 season as an assistant coach under Quinn Buckner. He also served one season (1992-93) on Bob Hill's staff with the Indiana Pacers.

"Randy has proven himself to be an outstanding NBA coach and we feel he will be an excellent addition to Dwane's staff," McHale said. "He has a great knowledge of the game and a tireless work ethic."
