The Miami Heat announced today that they have signed second-round draft selection Da'Sean Butler. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Butler, a 6'7", 230-pound forward, played all four seasons at West Virginia University appearing in 146 games (110 starts) and averaged 14.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.06 steals while shooting 44.8 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from three-point range and 73.3 percent from the foul line.
Chris Bosh will marry girlfriend Adrienne Williams.
Bosh, who signed a $100 million deal with Miami last month, proposed to Williams on Friday.
The couple have been dating for about a year.
"Chris proposed to Adrienne outside their new home in Miami at sunset. They then went out and celebrated with friends at Liv Nightclub, where Adrienne was seen showing off a huge diamond ring. They are both really happy," a source told The New York Post.
Jerry Stackhouse isn't under contract for the 2010-11 season, but he plans to be on the court this fall.
"I'm just waiting, man," he told SLAM.
"Everybody is kind of intrigued about the Miami situation and seeing if they're trying to add another veteran to their team. If that happened, I'd be thrilled to be there. I think that would feel like Hall of Fame accreditation to have a guy like Pat Riley come and ask you to be a part of their team. If it doesn't happen there, it doesn't happen."
The Heat are unlikely to swing any trades from now until the start of the season, writes Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
J.R. Smith and Rudy Fernandez are available on the NBA trade market.
Winderman writes that the Heat don't have many trade chips.
By NBA rule, any free agent signed in the offseason cannot be traded until Dec. 15.
Mario Chalmers and Dexter Pittman are the only two players on Miami's roster that can be currently dealt.
The NBA suspended three players a total of eight games on Friday.
Pacers guard Brandon Rush was suspended five games by violating the league's drug agreement, while Tyreke Evans of the Kings and Kenny Hasbrouck of the Heat drew suspensions for driving offenses.
"We have been made aware that Brandon Rush has been suspended for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy," Pacers president Larry Bird said in a statement. "We will do what we can to provide Brandon help going forward."
Evans received a one game suspension, while Hasbrouck will have to sit out for two contests.
Some of the Miami Heat made a surprise stop at the University of Miami for an informal scrimmage against the Hurricanes on Thursday.
LeBron James, Udonis Haslem, Mike Miller, Patrick Beverley and Hornets guard Chris Paul played pickup for more than an hour.
Paul is a close friend of James.
Some of Miami's players hadn't been told beforehand that James and the Heat would be popping in for a workout.
"No question, it's great having those guys here," Miami coach Frank Haith said. "It's a great influence for our players. They're some of the greatest players in the NBA, so it's obviously great for our guys and our program."
If anyone has experience playing with three superstars it's Eddie House.
House played for the Celtics when they added Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to play alongside Paul Pierce. Boston won the NBA championship the first season following the additions.
He is now a member of a Heat, who signed LeBron James and Chris Bosh to play with Dwyane Wade this summer.
"I compare it to the year I went to Boston when the Big 3 got together in 2007," House said. "But this is going to be even bigger. This is going to be Boston on steroids."
Heat second-round pick Da'Sean Butler has no plans to leave behind the possibility of a roster spot for the security of playing in Europe.
Fellow second-round pick James Varnado opted for a contract in the Italian League just a few days ago.
Butler, the 42nd overall pick in June's NBA Draft, is ready to battle for a roster spot in Miami.
"We're in discussions with Miami on signing a contract," agent Richard Katz said. "Our intentions are to make him part of the Miami Heat. And that's where he'd like to be, and I think that's where they'd like to have him."
Butler's chances of catching on with the Heat are complicated by the torn ACL he suffered playing for West Virginia in the Final Four this spring.
"We're certainly looking for as many assurances and guarantees as we can get, obviously," Katz said. "But we really haven't engaged in any substantive talks about the numbers or the parameters of the agreement yet."
The felony possession of marijuana case against Udonis Haslem could be dropped as early as next week, according to the player's attorney.
According to agent Eric Schwartzreich, a meeting with the arresting Florida Highway Patrol trooper and state attorney's office is scheduled for Tuesday.
"I think there's a good chance that they'll "no action" the case," Schwartzreich said. "There is a chance that, maybe, by next week the case is resolved."
