Beasley Is 'Light Years Ahead' Of Schedule

Jan 31, 2010 10:15 AM

Heat forward Michael Beasley has improved by leaps and bounds over the last few weeks as he has matured both on and off the court.

"I'm taking a different approach," Beasley said. "I'm a little more professional, not as lackadaisical, not as joking as past years. I still joke around a bit, but you've got to know when to get serious. I do. I'm growing up in every aspect of my life -- being a bigger family man, not going out much, playing a more respected role."

Beasley's improvement is a result of his sobriety, the team's focus on him, fatherhood, advice from Alonzo Mourning and better work habits.

"Everybody needs to see an example of what they want to be." Mourning said of Beasley. "You can see [the growth]. ... He's light years ahead of where we expected."

Miami Hasn't Ruled Out Re-Signing O'Neal

Jan 28, 2010 10:02 AM

League and team sources confirmed Wednesday that Miami is in its ``due diligence'' process in regards to exploring a trade for Amar'e Stoudemire.

If Miami is reluctant to package Michael Beasley in a potential offer for Stoudemire, then Jermaine O'Neal and a first-round pick might entice Phoenix.

But the Heat have also not ruled out trying to re-sign O'Neal this summer.

Chalmers Wants Starting Job Back

Jan 26, 2010 2:09 PM

Heat point guard Mario Chalmers wants to win his starting role back.

"Time to get back on my [game]. Tired of sittin' on the bench," Chalmers wrote Sunday on Twitter. "Gotta get back to the way I was."

Rafer Alston has been Miami's starter recently and should keep the role barring an injury.

"I'm ready to get back that spot," Chalmers said prior to Monday's game against the Cavaliers. "The team needs me back there. I want my spot back. I think there's a great chance I can get it back."

Chalmers initially lost the starting gig to Carlos Arroyo before Miami signed Alston.

"I don't want Rio to settle in comfortably into his role," coach Erik Spoelstra said.

"I want him to be more professional. I want him early to work. I want him to spend more time with the coaches watching film. I want him to ... get rest, pay attention to his diet. I want him to completely commit to his profession and to this team."

Jan 19, 2010 7:30 AM

A Haitian earthquake relief fund co-founded by Heat star Dwyane Wade and retired center Alonzo Mourning has already surpassed its goal of raising $800,000.

Wade donated $175,000, his salary per game, while Mourning, LeBron James, Chris Paul and Kevin Durant each gave $100,000 to the fund.

The "Athletes Relief Fund for Haiti" began asking for donations from pro athletes Friday.

"I expected nothing less from my friends and colleagues in the sports community," Wade said in a release. "Our commitment to this cause knows no bounds, and we will continue to accept any and all donations throughout the days ahead."

Mourning spent about 36 hours in Haiti last week, traveling with Miami-based Project Medishare.

The Grizzlies are still looking to add a weapon to their bench.

They are one of several teams showing interest in Heat swingman Dorell Wright, according to reports.

Wright is making $2.9 million this season and Miami is unlikely to re-sign him this summer.

The Grizzlies have three 2010 first-round picks to use as trade bait.
