Walsh: Ignoring Ewing Meant No Disrespect

May 30, 2008 4:52 AM

The first thing Knicks' President Donnie Walsh did when he arrived at the NBA pre-draft camp was seek out Patrick Ewing, who was disappointed he didn't receive a call about the coaching vacancy in New York, the New York Daily News is reporting.

Walsh wanted to explain the situation and let the former Knick great know that he meant no disrespect.

"That was not any sign of disrespect," Walsh said. "When we were interviewing, we didn't speak to anyone whose team was still in the playoffs.

Ewing is currently an assistant coach with the Orlando Magic.

"Then when Mike D'Antoni and Avery Johnson became available, we zeroed in on them," Walsh said. "They were on our primary list. Then we had another list, but we never got around to that. He would have been somebody we might have been interested in speaking with if it reached that point."

Magic Set To Look At Dorsey

May 29, 2008 10:22 AM

The Orlando Magic are set to take a long look at draft prospect Joey Dorsey, according to Florida Today.

The 6-foot-9, 265-pound Dorsey is hoping to prove during this week's pre-draft camp that he can transfer his interior dominance into the NBA.

"I told my agent that I want to face everybody who is being picked ahead of me in the draft in a workout," boasted the 24-year-old Dorsey. "I want to show everybody that I can play. I came down to the pre-draft camp to play against some of the best guys. But when I got here I didn't see those guys on the list, and I got (mad). Those guys can't run from me if they're already in a workout, and I get in it."

"It would be great me and Dwight Howard playing together," Dorsey said of the possibility of playing alongside Howard in Orlando. "We're both really athletic and like to block shots, so we could be great together."

Redick To Magic: Play Me Or Trade Me

May 15, 2008 6:32 PM

Magic shooting guard J.J. Redick expects to play with the team next season, but he hasn't backed off his request to be traded if he doesn't earn playing time, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

"I want to play. There were a lot of things that were said last summer and in the preseason, you know, and I thought I was going to play. It didn't happen," Redick said.

"I'm certainly not going to sit there and hear the same stuff and think I'm going to get the same results. I'm going to put some of this on myself to get better, but there's got to be an opportunity for me to get on the court," the former Duke guard added.

RealGM Note: Redick had a per 40 FIC of 7.9 (league median is 10.0) and a Reina Value of -61% which was largely due to his limited playing time.

Orlando Still Believes They're Better Than Detroit

May 15, 2008 6:02 PM

The Magic still believe that they are better than the Pistons despite the fact that Detroit eliminated them in five quick games earlier this week, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

"I think we're the better team," Hedo Turkoglu said. "If you look at the games closely, it upsets me."

Turkoglu wasn't the only player to hold that opinion.

"I don't want to say they're the better team, but they're the smarter team," Rashard Lewis said.

"No doubt, we're as good as Detroit," Dwight Howard said.

"I think we're a better basketball team -- at times," General Manager Otis Smith said. "What they have that we don't have is experience."

Pistons Eliminate Magic, Advance To ECF

May 13, 2008 10:01 PM

The Detroit Pistons advanced to their sixth-straight Eastern Conference Finals after eliminating the Orlando Magic with a 91-86 win on Tuesday night.

The Pistons trailed by three heading into the fourth quarter, but used a 26-18 edge over the final twelve minutes to clinch the semifinal series.

They made the comeback with Chauncey Billups on the sidelines, the second-straight game he missed after injuring his hamstring in Game Three.

Richard Hamilton starred with 31 points and Antonio McDyess added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who shot just 36% on the night but turned the ball over just five times.

Tayshaun Prince, who added 10 points and 7 rebounds in the win, blocked a dunk attempt by Hedo Turkoglu in the final moments that would have trimmed Detroit's lead to one.

Dwight Howard posted 14 points and 17 rebounds and Hedo Turkoglu tallied 18 points, 9 boards and 7 assists for the Magic, who hit 47% of their shot attempts but turned the ball over 20 times.

Rashard Lewis struggled, scoring 14 points and grabbing 8 rebounds on 4-for-13 shooting in the loss.

Guard Jameer Nelson predicted an Orlando victory heading into the decisive game.

Down five with the chance to trim the lead in the final seconds, the Magic turned the ball over. A perfect microcosm of what happened to Orlando in Game Five.

They outshot and outrebounded the Pistons, but beat themselves with the aforementioned twenty miscues and horrible shooting from the foul line (16-for-28).

Detroit will now await the winner of the Boston/Cleveland series, as Chauncey Billups tries to heal in time for the start of the Eastern Finals.

Billups Will Only Play If He's Close To 100%

May 13, 2008 9:39 AM

The Pistons still don't know whether or not point guard Chauncey Billups will face the Magic on Tuesday night in Game Five, according to The Detroit Free Press.

An injured right hamstring kept him out of Detroit's Game Four win in Orlando on Saturday afternoon, and he remains adamant about not rushing back to the floor unless he knows he can be effective.

The fact that the Pistons can close out the series at home in Game Five doesn't seem to matter either.

"I don't even know what we are. What are we? OK, 3-1," strength and conditioning Coach Arnie Kander said. "To me, it doesn't make a difference. I look at purely the comfort level of a player, what they can do. He's getting much closer to it."

"If you look at it three days ago, four days ago compared to today," Kander added, "night and day. ... He comes in every morning feeling better, and that's great."

Magic's Nelson Guarantees Game 5 Win

May 11, 2008 11:11 AM

Coming off a heartbreaking 90-89 loss at home against the Pistons, Magic guard Jameer Nelson has guaranteed a victory in Game Five on Tuesday, according to The Detroit Free Press.

"You know what, we?re going to make some adjustments, and we?re going to go there and win this game," Nelson said to Florida Today on Saturday. "I?m not being arrogant or cocky or anything like that, but tonight, we let it slip out of our hands, let Game 2 slip out of our hands, and we?re going to win this game in Detroit."

"For some reason, I feel we?re still the better team," Rashard Lewis told the Orlando Sentinel. "It was our mistakes, nothing they did. They?ve still got to beat us one more time."

Pistons Rally, Take 3-1 Lead Over Magic

May 10, 2008 7:53 PM

The Detroit Pistons used a huge third quarter run to come-from-behind and knock off the Orlando Magic, 90-89, in Game Four of their semifinal series on Saturday afternoon.

Richard Hamilton scored 32 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the Pistons, who made 44% of their field goal attempts and outrebounded Orlando by four.

With Chauncey Billups out, point guards Rodney Stuckey and Lindsay Hunter combined for 14 points and 5 assists.

Detroit outscored Orlando 26-15 in the third quarter, using a 15-0 run to seize hold of the lead.

Hedo Turkoglu lead the Magic with tremendous play in the fourth quarter, tallying 13 of his 20 points in the final twelve minutes.

However, Turkoglu missed a running layup with just a few seconds left on the clock that would have given the Magic a win. Dwight Howard missed a put back as well, as the Pistons took a 3-1 series lead with the win.

Howard posted 8 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, struggling offensively after the first quarter.

Orlando shot poorly from the foul line, going 11-for-17, and turned the ball over three more times than Detroit.

Rashard Lewis, Maurice Evans and Jameer Nelson all added 15 points for the Magic, but they couldn't overcome Howard's struggles.

Tayshaun Prince won the game for the Pistons with a runner in the lane on the team's final possession, notching 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists on the night.

Rasheed Wallace had 16 points and 8 rebounds and Antonio McDyess added 8 points and 14 boards for Detroit in the win.

Things started to get intense in the third quarter, after Howard and McDyess were assessed technicals following a scuffle after a missed basket.

Game Five will be Tuesday night in Detroit as the Pistons look to close out the series and advance to their sixth-straight Eastern Conference Finals.

May 9, 2008 6:00 AM

Pistons' guard Chauncey Billups is not sure if he'll be okay to play in Game 4 in Orlando because of a troublesome right hamstring, Chris McCosky of the Detroit News is reporting.

"Sore, man, it's just sore," Billups said when asked about the hamstring. "I am just going to take it one day at a time."
