Van Gundy: Magic's Window Open For Title

Oct 29, 2008 4:29 PM

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy believes that the team's window to win a championship should be open for a few years.

"We should have a pretty good window for four or five years, anyway," Van Gundy said. "I would say we're on the early side of it. I would say among the better teams, we're probably positioned for the long run as well as anybody."

General Manager Otis Smith concurs with Van Gundy, saying, "I think the window is just cracked open for our team."

Magic Looking At Hudson As Third PG

Oct 27, 2008 7:13 AM

The Magic are looking at Troy Hudson as a possible third point guard heading into the 2008-09 season.

A slot on the roster opened up when Mike Wilks' suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy has said that Hedo Turkoglu and Courtney Lee can help handle the ball.

"Ideally, we'd want to have a third point guard even if you decide to play those guys there at times," he said. "From a practice standpoint, if a guy is down, quite honestly, it gets pretty tough to function the way you want to function.

"You're not just going to take anybody. But ideally we'd like to get a third point; I think we're in agreement on that. It's a matter of can you get what you want."

Eddie Gill could be an option, as well.

Shaq And Hill Want To Buy Magic?

Oct 22, 2008 4:27 PM

Shaquille O'Neal and Grant Hill are reportedly serious about buying the Orlando Magic when their playing careers are over in a couple of years.

O'Neal and Hill, both former Magic players who make their permanent homes in Orlando, will talk with executives to see if the team is available.

"Yeah, it's serious," O'Neal said. "Grant, who's like my best friend now, we have a relationship with the [owner Rich] DeVos family. So we always throw out Grant president, me general manager. We always throw that out just to see what they say. Hopefully, they bite that. But if not, just put together a group and try to get something somewhere.

"I've mentioned it to [Orlando CEO and president] Bob Vander Weide, and he laughs. But I know they love Grant as president. I know they like that idea. I always try to ride Grant's coat tails. Hey, Grant's the president. He's better looking, better spoken, and can do the president. But I can be the general manager. I can get stuff done."

Orlando's Foyle Pondering Retirement

Oct 21, 2008 4:58 PM

Magic center Adonal Foyle is contemplating retirement at the end of the 2008-09 season.

"It's constantly in the back of my mind," said Foyle, 33, who isn't expected to play that much in Orlando this year.

Foyle knows he could fall behind both Tony Battie and Marcin Gortat as Dwight Howard's backup.

"Tony is sort of the guy we want as the first big off the bench," Stan Van Gundy said. "As I told Adonal, we know what he can do. We think he can be a very effective backup center, but we're intrigued by Marcin. That's what our plans our now."

Playing Overseas A Possibility For Turkoglu

Oct 17, 2008 10:22 AM

Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu has said that playing overseas is "a possibility" for him as free agency approaches at the end of this season.

He has a player's option but can return for the sixth, and final, year on his contract.

"I'm from Europe. I've played in Europe . . . so it's just a possibility. It is. I can't lie," Turkoglu said. "But this is my ninth year in the league. I've adjusted here.

"If I have another great year, it will be really hard for me to leave United States and go back overseas. I came from there to here to accomplish something."

Rashard Feels No Pressure In Orlando This Season

Oct 15, 2008 5:23 PM

Magic forward Rashard Lewis claims that he feels no pressure heading into the second year of his six-year, $118 million contract.

"There was a lot of pressure with the contract and having to learn the guys and the coaching staff, but this year I feel no pressure at all," Lewis said candidly. "I'm more relaxed, more myself and out there to just play the game. I have that pressure off, and I'm just ready to play ball."

Orlando's Van Gundy Stays Connected With Text Messages

Oct 12, 2008 10:14 AM

Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy has learned to text message, which has helped him keep in contact with his players more efficiently.

"Stan learned to text message," center Dwight Howard said. "He's pretty good at it."

Players were happy to hear from Van Gundy because they didn't have to this summer. Some like the softer side of Van Gundy because they seemed to be intimidated in the beginning.

"When we first heard it, it was like, 'This guy screams too much; it's starting to get on our nerves. I don't know if I can take it too much," Rashard Lewis said. "Maybe I'll have to scream back at him.' That's just the way he coaches, even when we're playing hard."

"He talks loud. He coaches loud. He's trying to get his point across. It pays off in the long run."

Magic Overwhelm CSKA Moscow

Oct 11, 2008 6:35 AM

Dwight Howard was huge against the defending Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow on Friday night, finishing with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 steals in only 28 minutes of action to help the Magic to a 94-66 win, the Associated Press is reporting.

"The obvious difference in the game was Dwight Howard," Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy said. "I don't think they have anybody like him in the Euroleague. They didn't have a chance to stop him, and he really kept taking it at them."

"Dwight was overwhelming," said former Kansas center Sasha Kaun, who was saddled with guarding Howard most of the game. "I played against him in some high school all-star games five years ago and he has really developed some offensive skills. He is so strong and quick that it's really tough to stay with him."
