San Antonio Spurs assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo sat down for an interview in San Antonio with Minnesota Timberwolves representatives on Friday regarding the T-Wolves head coaching vacancy.

A source close to the team said that the Wolves possibly could offer Carlesimo the position this weekend. But that could not be confirmed.

Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, declined to comment on the interview.

A source has told the Pioneer Press that Glen Taylor and Kevin McHale of the Timberwolves recently flew to Grand Rapids, Mich., to interview Michigan State's Tom Izzo about the Wolves' coaching vacancy.

Izzo, who likely would cost the Wolves' $4 million a year, is expected to remain with the Spartans unless the Detroit Pistons job becomes available, which is becoming a possibility with the Larry Brown to Cleveland rumors that have been circulating.

Steve Nash was let go by the Mavericks after last season's disappointing end and now there are rumors floating about in regards to a Dirk Nowitzki trade this off-season.  

So where could the Mavericks potentially deal Dirk Nowitzki according to Sam Smith?

One possibility is a Garnett, Cassell and Sprewell deal while also making the Mavs take Troy Hudson and his long contract for Nowitzki, Terry, promising rookie Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse and perhaps a throw-in or two like rookie Pavel Podkolzin and a No. 1 draft pick?

A Garnett for Nowitzki type deal might work, however, it could lead to a revolt in Minnesota.

Dan Issel's agent Warren LeGarie, confirmed Wednesday he has had discussions with Minnesota about the team's coaching opening.

"We're still waiting to hear back," LeGarie said. "He was pitched for an interview."

Issel, 56, is seeking a return to the NBA. He resigned from the Nuggets in December 2001 after making an ethnic slur to a Hispanic spectator.

The Minnesota Timberwolves interviewed Memphis Grizzlies assistant Lionel Hollins for their vacant position at head coach.

Hollins is not considered the favorite however, word has it current assistant Sidney Lowe has been the most impressive candidate so far.

The Wolves have also expressed interest in commentator Doug Collins who reportedly has no interest in them.

At the end of the Minnesota Timberwolves' season, several articles centered around the possible trade of Kevin Garnett.

The New York Post is now reporting that all such rumored deals  will not happen and that the Wolves will hold onto their franchise player.

Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said on Friday that he expects to name a new coach within the next month.  All three assistant coaches have applied for the position.

It's an important selection, so to wait another couple of weeks isn't going to make a difference to us," Taylor told The Associated Press after appearing as a guest speaker at a University of St. Thomas luncheon.

Current temporary coach Kevin McHale reportedly loathes coaching and will not return as head coach next season.

Several years ago the Kings decided to swap Jason Williams for Mike Bibby and the Star Tribune is now reporting that Williams is rumored to be moved again for another point guard; This time to Minnesota for Sam Cassell.

Cassell is entering the final year of his contract and would give the Grizzlies a very veteran point guard to share the duties with Earl Watson.

Williams has had a series of disputes with the Memphis coaching staff over the last few weeks.

Williams is signed thru the end of the 2007-2008 season.

Former Hornets and Warriors coach Dave Cowens has emerged as a leading candidate for the head coaching vacancy in Minnesota.

The Wolves have begun interviewing coaching prospects but have confidentiality agreements with most of them and won't comment.

Cowens was a Hall of Fame forward with the Boston Celtics, placing him in two of the same fraternities as Wolves executive Kevin McHale.

Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor announced that recently fired coach Flip Saunders will not come back to the team that let him go.

"I had a talk with Flip, and he apparently he wants to move on and doesn't want to be considered for the Timberwolves job," Taylor said.
