Oden Had Two-Day Visit With Heat

Jun 27, 2013 1:06 PM

Greg Oden recently had a two-day visit with the Miami Heat.

Pat Riley confirmed the visit and restated his interest in signing Oden.

“We will explore that and see where it goes because of the possibilities,’’ Riley said of Oden, who has been plagued by knee problems since being the NBA’s No. 1 draft pick in 2007. “You go back to look at (Zydrunas) Ilgauskas. He had nothing but foot problems for about four years and everybody thought it was over. And the same thing happened with Kurt Thomas at the beginning of his career. There’s been a lot of players young in their careers that have had chronic injuries (and then) it doesn’t happen to them anymore. I think he’s such a young player and to be such a force, that you’d want to monitor him very closely.’’

The Heat would likely need to use their their $3.183 million exception to sign Oden.

Heat Don't Expect To Use Amnesty On Mike Miller

Jun 26, 2013 12:30 PM

The Miami Heat do not anticipate using their amnesty provision on Mike Miller this offseason.

Miller played sparingly this season but became a critical member of their rotation in the playoffs.

"I like our team, and we don't like change," said Pat Riley. "Mike is as healthy as he's ever been."

Riley suggested that the only way Miller will be amnestied is at the direction of ownership.

"Unless I get a mandate, we haven't talked about it."

Due to the tax obligations of the Heat, using the amnesty on Miller would save $14 million next season.

LeBron: Keeping Big Three Intact Is 'Ultimate Finish'

Jun 26, 2013 12:15 AM

LeBron James has made it clear that he will not contemplate free agency of 2014 now, but the Miami Heat forward was adamant maintaining the team's current big three -- along with Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra -- is critical.

“That’s the goal," James said on Tuesday. "That’s the ultimate finish. We all hope that can happen, obviously, to be able to have success with two guys and with Riles and Spo.

“This is what we came here for. That would be the ultimate. But I don’t know. Life changes, things happen, and you have to be prepared for that. But this is what we all want to be here for. And that’s to be able to compete for a championship every year. If we can do that, then it would be awesome.”

James said it is possible he will return to the gym to train within the next 10 days, after winning his second NBA championship and Finals MVP.

Ray Allen Unlikely To Opt In On 13-14 Contract With Heat

Jun 25, 2013 9:21 PM

Rashard Lewis and James Jones opted in on their contracts with the Miami Heat for the 13-14 NBA season.

Ray Allen, however, hasn't opted in and is unlikely to before Saturday's deadline.

Allen has one season at $3.2 million remaining on the two-year deal he signed last offseason.

Allen can become Miami's Non-Bird exception to sign a four-year deal with annual 4.5 percent raises.

The Heat cannot re-sign Allen until the moratorium is lifted on July 10.

Bosh: Ray Allen 'Is Coming Back' To Heat

Jun 24, 2013 10:55 PM

Miami Heat players have been in Ray Allen's ear since winning the NBA championship, persuading him to return to the team by exercising his player option this offseason.

In his mind, Chris Bosh believes Allen's decision is simple -- and one he has made.

“We can make quotes all day, but he’s coming back,” Bosh said. “I mean, there’s really nothing to say. We respect each other’s space, but there’s one decision to make. So, it’s easy.”

Heat players also believe Chris Andersen will return.

“I think we have all the influence,” Bosh said. “Guys want to come back. I don’t think it’s any situation in the world better than what we have right now, and I think that speaks for itself, really."

LeBron Hasn't Begun Contemplating 2014

Jun 24, 2013 12:31 PM

LeBron James can opt out of his contract with the Miami Heat during the 2014 offseason. The Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers are two teams likely to have enough cap space to sign him to a max contract outright, though the success of the situation with the Heat would prove difficult for him to leave.

"I don't know because I haven't really even thought about it," said James. "So when that moment comes up, I will approach it, like a professional, and we'll see what happens."

James almost certainly won't announce his decision live on television in an hour-long special.

"You learn from your mistakes," he said. "That's something I've been able to do."

James and the Heat have reached the Finals in each of their three seasons together.

"That's something I've lived with, and if the opportunity comes [again], if I'm in that position, I'll be able to handle it much better."

Wade Had Left Knee Drained Before Game 7 Of Finals

Jun 22, 2013 9:18 PM

Dwyane Wade had his left knee drained one day before Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

Wade played 39 minutes in the finale, scoring 23 points on 11-for-21 shooting.

"We know what he was dealing with," Erik Spoelstra said after Game 7. "Really, he should be commended for being out there and doing whatever it takes, putting himself out there for criticism, possible criticism, because he wasn't 100 percent. And he just helped us win. That was the bottom line. It was a selfless effort for two months. And some players probably wouldn't have played."

Wade said the knee trouble was one of the worst things he’s dealt with in his 10-year career.

"The toughest part of it is, you work all season to get healthy coming off of knee surgery," Wade said. "And when I finally got the way, everybody saw in my play that I was playing great, some of the best basketball in the role I have on this team. Then I get the bone bruises, and something I worked hard for was getting taken away, and I dealt with it for three months. It was disappointing, frustrating. It hurt. I was able to mask it some nights. Some nights, not."
