Heat May Keep Wade Out Of Back-To-Backs Until December

Oct 30, 2013 7:01 PM

The Miami Heat are holding Dwyane Wade out of Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Heat played last night in Miami and may continue to hold Wade out of back-to-backs until December.

"That's really part of the plan," Erik Spoelstra said of Wednesday's decision. "It's not necessarily our rule that he won't play back-to-backs. It's just been a long week in terms of our preparations. His knee is a little bit sore, but nothing dramatic of a major concern. We're just going to be proactive with it."

Spoelstra said the decision to sit Wade was made at the midday walkthrough at the team hotel.

"We'll continue to evaluate not only Dwyane, but the rest of our guys each day," Spoelstra said. "But we do have specific plans for everybody. Every day it might be something different."

Spoesltra, LeBron 'More Intertwined Than Ever'

Oct 30, 2013 4:42 PM

Erik Spoelstra signed a four-year contract with the Miami Heat on the eve of training camp and may be one of the biggest reasons why LeBron James also re-commits to the franchise this July.

"They're more intertwined than they've ever been," says a league source closely connected to James and Spoelstra. "LeBron knows he plays for one of the elite coaches in the game, and that maybe wasn't the case when he got there."

Spoelstra has never let the story become about him and has been relentless in remaining innovative. Spoelstra has studied football teams that use the spread option, which helped him develop position-less basketball.

Spoelstra and James were strangers when their partnership began in 2010 and he survived calls for his firing when the Heat struggled initially in 10-11.

LeBron James Hopeful To Play For Team USA In 2016 Olympics

Oct 28, 2013 12:41 PM

LeBron James says he is hopeful to represent Team USA in the 2016 Olympics as long as he is healthy.

A decision has not been finalized yet by James.

"No, I'm not officially in, just yet," James said. "But hopefully, I can be healthy enough and on top of my game at that point where I'll be taken."

When told he will not have to worry about being selected, James said: "Hopefully."

James has helped lead the U.S. team to the gold medal in 2008 and 2012.

LeBron To Reach Out To Rose Welcoming Him Back

Oct 27, 2013 8:23 PM

LeBron James will reach out to Derrick Rose to welcome him back to the NBA ahead of Tuesday's NBA regular season opener between the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls.

Rose sat out the entire 12-13 season recovering from a torn ACL.

"I'm happy and thrilled that he's back," James said. "I'm happy with what he did last year, to be able to stand strong throughout everything, throughout all of the adversity of everybody criticizing him about what he should do. He did what was best for him."

The Heat have taken notice of how impressive Rose has looked in the preseason.

"The game needs him," Dwyane Wade said. "You never want to see anyone get hurt, especially a player of D-Rose's caliber. Just because I'm a competitor doesn't mean I don't understand the importance of Derrick Rose to basketball. So it's good to see him back, and good to see him confident. He's going to make it tougher on everybody."

Eric Griffin Released By Heat

Oct 26, 2013 5:24 PM

The Miami Heat have released Eric Griffin, a league source told RealGM.

Griffin, an athletic forward at 6-foot-8, intrigued the Heat in the Las Vegas summer league and appeared in six preseason games. He averaged nearly two points and one rebound in the preseason – highlighted by a leap over the 6-foot-10 Mason Plumlee against Brooklyn Nets.

There had been discussion that Miami wanted to keep Griffin in order for the franchise to maintain rights to him even when he’d be sent to the NBA D-League. The Heat also brought Roger Mason Jr. and Michael Beasley into training camp under non-guaranteed contracts, but both are virtual certainties to make the regular season roster.

Entering his second professional season, Griffin, 23, will receive significant interest overseas and in the D-League. He went unselected out of Campbell University in the 2012 draft.

Report: Mike Miller Considering Lawsuit Against Heat Over Stolen Money From Con Man

Oct 24, 2013 11:25 PM

Mike Miller is strongly considering filing a lawsuit against the Miami Heat because he believes the franchise bears some responsibility for him being swindled by a con man, according to attorney Andrew Fine.

Miller, who now plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, lost $1.7 million in a scam allegedly orchestrated by Haider Zafar.

Heat employee Stephen Weber introduced Miller to Zafar, and Zafar used $700,000 of the money he stole from Miller to pay for courtside Heat tickets.

Settlement talks between Miller and the Heat have stalled. Miller asked for that $700,000 back from the Heat, plus attorney’s fees, but “the parties were far apart,” Fine said.

In the potential lawsuit, Miller is seeking the entire $1.7 million that he lost in Zafar’s scam. Current Heat players James Jones and Rashard Lewis also were reportedly defrauded in a scam but are not pursuing claims against the team.

Miller was released by the Heat under the amnesty provision in the offseason and signed a free agent deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Greg Oden Dunks In 1st Game In More Than 1,400 Days

Greg Oden made a surprise preseason appearance in the Miami Heat's game on Wednesday against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Oden hasn't played in a game in more than 1,400 days.

The Heat ran a post-up play for Oden on his first possession, which resulted in a dunk.

Oden played 80 seconds, scoring those two points to go with two rebounds, a turnover and a foul.

Heat Must Remain 'Development Team' Due To CBA

Oct 23, 2013 8:17 PM

The Miami Heat will attempt to win their third consecutive championship this season, but Pat Riley acknowledges that they will need to continue developing complementary pieces in order to remain a contender.

"We are a development team," said Riley. "Right now, we're a championship team, with veteran players. But the pipeline to becoming a championship team in the next four or five years, because of the new collective-bargaining agreement and all of the punitive taxes and revenue-sharing concepts, that really sort of eat into how you build a team financially.

"Developing players is the most important thing that we can do right now in the game."

The only remaining developmental prospects on Miami's roster are Justin Hamilton and Eric Griffin, but they have taken on reclamation projects in Michael Beasley and Greg Oden.

Chris Bosh Can Now Play More Instinctually In Miami's Established System

Oct 22, 2013 12:22 PM

The value of Chris Bosh to the Miami Heat has become increasingly appreciated as their run together has evolved.

“He’s at a very, very comfortable level right now with whatever role — whether it’s the five or the four — and he’s shooting the ball extremely well,” LeBron James said. “He’s very comfortable in being the point man in a lot of our offenses and our offense kind of goes through him.”

Erik Spoelstra said Monday that “more experience” in the Heat’s system has allowed Bosh to play more instinctually.

“I think that’s what everyone is seeing right now,” Spoelstra said. “He’s able to do what he’s done so well for us in the past, which is facilitate and allow things to work, but also be aggressive and make teams have to guard him.”

Spoelstra has called Bosh the most important player on the Heat since 2011.

“His game has evolved in so many different areas,” Spoelstra said. “Arguably, he has to evolve in more areas than any other player, and that’s on both sides of the floor. But we’ve put him on every spot on the court. For a center, that’s dynamic.”
