Wizards Bench Daniel Gafford For Time Being

Jan 30, 2022 9:27 AM

Following his team's fifth consecutive loss, Washington Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. said former starting center Daniel Gafford has been removed from the rotation for the time being. Unseld said it wasn't about Gafford's play, but that the team had poor flow when trying to play three centers.

Thomas Bryant recently returned after a year-long absence from a torn ACL. He got his first start of the season in Saturday's loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. Montrezl Harrell played his regular minutes as the backup five as well.

In recent weeks, rumors have surfaced that rival teams are looking at Washington's crowded frontcourt for trade options. In addition to Bryant, Gafford and Harrell at center, the Wizards are also stuffed at the four with Kyle Kuzma, Rui Hachimura and Davis Bertans.

After a 10-3 start, Washington has lost 23 of 36 games. That's seen the Wizards fall to 11th in the Eastern Conference.

Spencer Dinwiddie: Speaking Up In Washington Wasn't Welcomed

Jan 30, 2022 9:15 AM

The Washington Wizards have tumbled to 11th in the Eastern Conference after a fifth consecutive loss on Saturday. Following the game, Spencer Dinwiddie was asked if he needs to do more as one of the team's leaders. Dinwiddie didn't mince words with his answer.

"It's an interesting situation. I spoke up a little bit early on. It wasn't necessarily welcomed. And so, like I said, I try to do whatever's asked of me. At the end of the day, everybody has a role to play," Dinwiddie said. "It's about being accountable in your role and doing that to the best of your ability. That's really all I've got."

Trade rumors have swirled around the Wizards regarding star Bradley Beal, but also with several players in the team's crowded frontcourt. Washington coach Wes Unseld Jr. revealed after the game that former starting center Daniel Gafford will be out of the rotation for the time being. With Thomas Bryant back from injury, Unseld is scrapping the three-center rotation he had used over the last week or so.

Bradley Beal: I'm Giving Wizards An Opportunity

Jan 26, 2022 8:14 AM

The Washington Wizards blew a 35-point lead to lose 116-115 to the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday.

“I have no words besides ‘embarrassing,’” Bradley Beal said.

The Wizards raised their expectations for the season after a 10-3 start. Since Nov. 16, they have a 13-22 record.

The Wizards want to retain Beal no matter what, but their struggles could put his future in question.

“I have a lot of conversations with Tommy [Sheppard],” Beal said Tuesday night. “We’re very transparent with what we want to do and what my future looks like. And yeah, the (trade) deadline is coming up, and I’m very well aware of how we’re playing and how other teams are playing and what my interests are. Granted, I’m giving this organization an opportunity to prove that and show that, and obviously I’m a big factor in that, too, in producing and playing well and performing. But I want to win, and we all know that. It’s just a matter of us doing it. We’ve got the pieces, we have the assets, we’ve got the depth — everything that we bragged about at the beginning of the year. Now let’s put it together and make it work. Speculations are going to be what they are. I can’t control that. But I know what comes out of my mouth, and I know where my heart is, and everyone will know.”

Bradley Beal: We're Going In The Right Direction, But Still Have Improvements To Make

Jan 23, 2022 1:23 PM

Bradley Beal reaffirmed he's not asking to leave the Washington Wizards in the near future. Beal said the Wizards are "going in the right direction, but still have a lot of improvements to make".

In a wide-ranging podcast appearance, Beal spoke of his commitment to Washington as being something he's proud of. He also said things need to continue to improve if he's to stay long-term. Beal also realizes he's got something special as the franchise centerpiece for the Wizards.

“Honestly, realizing that a franchise is willing to build around you. It’s not always like that everywhere. Like, if I go somewhere else, they’re just not going to build around you. They’ll build around what they have," Beal said. "There’s nothing absolutely nothing wrong with that, but if I have the chance to create my own legacy and make it work here with the team that drafted me, then why not give it a shot? It it works, it works, If it doesn’t, I can say ‘At least I tried.’ That’s just who I am. That’s my blessing and curse, my loyalty. We’re transitioning, we’re going in the right direction, but we still have a lot of improvements to make.”

Wizards Not Discussing Bradley Beal Trades Yet

Jan 19, 2022 9:30 AM

The Washington Wizards and Bradley Beal are committed to each other at least through this season. Beyond that remains up in the air. Despite that, Washington isn't talking about trading their franchise player yet.

Beal has made it clear he won't sign an extension, as that would leave too much money on the table. Beal has also sent signals he'll opt out of his deal this summer. That would allow Beal to sign a long-term deal, likely starting at his max salary of over $41 million.

On the flip side, Beal has expressed he wants to stay and win in Washington. He and his family enjoy living in the area, and Beal is close with some of his teammates.

Lakers, Blazers, Knicks, Jazz, Wizards, Celtics, Pacers, Wolves, Kings Interested In Jerami Grant

Jan 18, 2022 11:22 AM

The Detroit Pistons have received interest in Jerami Grant from the Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trail Blazers, New York Knicks, Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Sacramento Kings.

The Pistons are seeking either two first round picks or one first round pick plus a high upside young player in exchange for Grant.

Grant expects to sign a lucrative extension in the ballpark of four years, $112 million this offseason.

Washington is viewed by some league personnel as a favorite to trade for Grant. Grant grew up in the D.C. area and is familiar with Wes Unseld Jr. from their time together with the Denver Nuggets.

The Memphis Grizzlies have been mentioned in some circles speculatively, but they're not expected to pursue Grant.

Thomas Bryant To Return For Wizards On Wednesday

Jan 12, 2022 11:04 AM

Washington Wizards center Thomas Bryant is poised to make his 2021-22 season debut on Wednesday. Wizards head coach Wes Unseld Jr. said barring anything unforeseen that Bryant would be available to play against the Orlando Magic. Bryant has missed nearly one year of action since tearing his left ACL in January of 2021.

Prior to his injury, Bryant has blossomed into a solid starting center for the Wizards. In three seasons in Washington, Bryant has averaged 11.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and one block per game.

Unseld Jr. previously said Bryant will be worked into the frontcourt mix when he returns. Washington is deep in frontcourt options with Daniel Gafford and Kyle Kuzma entrenched as starters, and Montrezl Harrell, Davis Bertans and the recently returned Rui Hachimura backing them up.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Montrezl Harrell Had Physical Confrontation At Halftime

Jan 12, 2022 8:36 AM

Washington Wizards players Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Montrezl Harrell had to be separated at halftime of Tuesday's win over the Oklahoma City Thunder after a physical confrontation. Harrell was reportedly upset that Caldwell-Pope didn't pass him the ball at the end of the first half. After words were exchanged, both players threw punches that did not connect. Teammates and security personnel then physically separated the two players.

Both Caldwell-Pope and Harrell played their regular number of minutes in the second half of the game.

The Wizards acquired both players from the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason, in the deal that saw Russell Westbrook sent to LA. Caldwell-Pope has been a starter all season, while Harrell has been Washington's key frontcourt reserve.
