Leonsis Says Wizards Lost Money Last Year

Jun 28, 2011 4:36 PM

In Ted Leonsis’s first season as owner of the Wizards, the team didn’t have much success on the court, as it finished with just 23 wins.

And in an interview on Monday with Chris Miller of Comcast SportsNet, Leonsis admitted that the Wizards weren’t very successful at the box office, either.

“We lost money last year,” Leonsis said, matter-of-factly, when asked about NBA Commissioner David Stern’s claims that 22 of the league’s 30 teams lost money last year.

Stern has stated that his goal is to make the league profitable for his owners, and the union estimates that the league is looking to make cuts of more than $8 billion over 10 years.

Wizards Moving Up To Nab Kanter?

Jun 22, 2011 10:19 AM

Turkish big man Enes Kanter hasn’t hid his desire to play in Washington, but his agent, Max Ergul, has intimated that the Wizards need to move up in order to get him.

So, now comes the speculation about possible deals for Kanter being discussed.

ESPN.com’s Chad Ford floated out that Cleveland is exploring making moving the fourth overall pick to Washington for picks No. 6 and No. 18. The deal would help the Wizards increase their chances of drafting Kanter, who is also rumored to be headed to the Cavaliers -- or possibly to Utah at No. 3.

Sources: Wizards Have No Interest In Trading McGee

Jun 17, 2011 4:57 PM

The Minnesota Timberwolves may want JaVale McGee in any swap for the No. 2 overall pick, but the Wizards have no interest in moving the incredibly athletic, 7-foot-1 center, according to two sources with knowledge of the team’s thinking.

In recent weeks, both Jonathan Givony of Draft Express and ESPN.com’s Chad Ford have mentioned McGee as a player Minnesota covets. But while the Timberwolves have asked for him, dealing McGee isn’t considered an option for the Wizards in order to move into the top three in the June 23 NBA draft, the sources said.

Trading McGee hasn’t even been discussed internally, according to the sources -- especially since many within the organization believe that the 23-year-old McGee would be deemed a top three-to-five pick if he were in the draft this year.

Vesely To Work Out For Five Teams

Jun 17, 2011 9:51 AM

According to a league source, the Wizards will be in New Jersey on Sunday to watch athletic forward Jan Vesely of the Czech Republic.

The 6-foot-11 Vesely wasn’t expected to work out for NBA teams in advance of the draft, and the Wizards were among a handful of teams in attendance when he scored 18 points to lead Partizan Belgrade to the Serbian title last week. Toronto, Utah, Cleveland and possibly Detroit are expected to witness Vesely’s lone workout for NBA teams.

The Wizards have been high on Vesely for some time and some scouts believe that he would be the perfect fit for a team that likes to run and push the tempo (or rather a team with John Wall playing point guard).

Wizards To Work Out Kanter

Jun 13, 2011 10:11 PM

During the NBA combine in Chicago last month, Kanter expressed his desire to play for the Wizards and possibly team with his “good friend” John Wall.

The Wizards interviewed the 6-foot-11 Kanter in Chicago but had been hoping to arrange another meeting with him before the June 23 draft in Newark.

The 19-year-old Kanter missed all of last season at Kentucky because of violating NCAA eligibility rules and is projected to go anywhere from second to sixth.

Lewis Reaches Out To LeBron's Stepfather About Rumors

Jun 11, 2011 12:16 PM

Rashard Lewis called into a Houston radio station to deny rumors that he was involved in an affair with Savanah Brinson, fiance of LeBron James.

"I have no idea," Lewis said when asked why the rumors were circulating. "That's what I'm trying to figure out. ... Now I come home and I hear the same rumors. ... Those rumors are 100 percent false. They're not true. I don't know how they came up."

Lewis said he reached out to James' stepfather and assured him the rumors were "completely false."

"He said on their side of the camp, they know it's not true," Lewis told host Qui West. "They don't believe it. He told me not to worry about it at all."

Kanter Waiting For Call From Favored Wizards

Jun 6, 2011 10:13 AM

Although he has expressed a desire to play in Washington, Enes Kanter appears to be more interested in going high in the draft. Kanter does not have a workout scheduled for the Wizards, who hold the sixth pick in the NBA draft, but the team remains hopeful that something could come together in the next few weeks – either in Chicago, where Kanter is training at Attack Athletics, or possibly in Washington.

Kanter, the 6-foot-11 Turkish center who missed all of last season at Kentucky because of NCAA eligibility violations, completed his first individual workout with Utah last Friday. He is scheduled to work out for Toronto in Chicago on Monday and will head to Cleveland on Tuesday. He has an individual workout set for Minnesota next week. Kanter spoke with the Wizards three weeks ago and worked out with other draft prospects for NBA executives and scouts at the NBA combine in Chicago. But scheduling a workout with Kanter might require a little creativity.

“Listen, we like Washington. I haven’t heard anything from them,” said Kanter’s agent, Max Ergul. “I guess they know he’s not going to be there at six. So, until they do something about it, it seems like they are not going to give me a call for workout.”

Wizards Not Looking To Move Up In Draft

Jun 5, 2011 2:18 PM

Draft Express’ Jonathan Givony reported on his Twitter account on Thursday that the Wizards and Phoenix Suns are working hardest to move up get Derrick Williams, but one source with knowledge of the situation said “there’s not” any truth to the speculation, while another with knowledge of the Timberwolves’ plans said that the Wizards have yet to contact Minnesota about making a deal.

The Wizards have the sixth pick in the draft and President Ernie Grunfeld has already stated that the team is willing to “see what other opportunities come up.” But they likely don’t have the talented veteran pieces that it would take to get the No. 2 pick.

Minnesota was the NBA’s youngest team last season and just signed 20-year-old Ricky Rubio -- whom the Timberwolves selected in 2009 with fifth pick acquired from Washington in the Mike Miller and Randy Foye deal -- to a contract earlier this week.
