Young Unwilling To Give Wizards 'Hometown Discount'

Apr 28, 2011 4:34 PM

Nick Young averaged a career-best 17.4 points -- improving his scoring average by 8.8 points from last season -- but isn’t sure if he will continue to play in Washington beyond this season, as he enters restricted free agency with an unsettled collective bargaining situation.

“It will be great, but you never know. I done seen a lot, being a Wizard. I’m going to keep my options open and hope for the best,” Young said, when asked about his future with the team following his exit interviews. “The Wizards drafted me, so it’s only right that I’d come back.”

When asked if he would be willing to offer a hometown discount in order to stay in Washington, Young replied, “My mama told me, never leave nothing on the table.”

Union VP Evans: Hard Cap Out Of The Question

Apr 28, 2011 4:16 PM

National Basketball Players’ Association vice president Maurice Evans said players might be willing to relent on BRI, but do not intend to budge on a hard cap.

“In my opinion, the current deal we have now is actually working,” Evans said. “So if we can just work from there and try and figure out something that works for everybody… Again, we want to bargain with them. We don’t want to throw darts and say who is right and who is wrong. We just want to get a deal. There has to be some model that says this is how we do business and it’s consistent from here out. Tweak this, and work from there. Honestly, I don’t think there is anything more we can give and a hard cap is definitely not going to happen.”

The owners are also expected to push for reducing the length of guaranteed contracts, and limiting the guarantees on some deals, which Evans felt is unnecessary. “I don’t think there is nowhere to go from here,” he said. “Everything has gone down. We can’t continue to diminish the years of contracts. GMs and owners don’t have to sign players for those allotted number of years. We don’t need to self-govern them. Doesn’t make any sense.”

Saunders Sees Similarities Between Wall, Garnett

Apr 18, 2011 10:23 AM

Wizards point guard John Wall’s stellar rookie season reminds coach Flip Saunders of his days with the Minnesota Timberwolves, when he was coaching a young Kevin Garnett.

During his final postgame interview of the season, Saunders talked about the similarities between the two players and why he thinks thatWall could become just as big a star as Garnett.

“They have the same competitiveness, theyre both perfectionists, theyre not satisfied very easily,” Saunders said.

“They both have great respect for the game, and theyre both freaks of talent in their own way. KG was a freak because he didnt want to be a 7-footer, so hed say he was 6-foot-13. He could play any position on the floor and he was multidimensional.

“John has a unique talent in that he has unbelievable speed and size. What people overlook is that he averaged 16 points, over eight assists, top 10 in steals [this season], but he almost averaged five rebounds per game. As a rookie, thats a lot.”

Wall Ready To Rest And Study After First NBA Season

Apr 14, 2011 7:46 AM

John Wall finished a rookie season on Wednesday that would have likely resulted in a Rookie of the Year award if not for the presence of Blake Griffin, who had his own rookie season delayed by one year due to injury.

“It seems like it just started,” said Wall. “I’m kind of glad it’s over, so I can take some time off to rest and just study the game more, study what people did to me, study what I can learn from other guys and just getting back healthy next year and just know what I’ve got to do. But it’s tough. I still want to play.”

Jordan Crawford, Maurice Evans Have Brought Energy To Wizards

Apr 9, 2011 4:33 PM

Viewed basically as expendable extras, Jordan Crawford and Maurice Evans have become major contributors since arriving in Washington in the deal that sent Kirk Hinrich to Atlanta nearly six weeks ago.

The wave of injuries that have sidelined Nick Young, Rashard Lewis, Trevor Booker and Josh Howard have forced the Wizards to lean on the two former Hawks.

The trade has worked out tremendously for the Wizards with Crawford and Evans helping the team to establish a new, scrappy identity.

“What it’s done, it’s almost rejuvenated us,” Coach Flip Saunders said of the deal. “Those guys, their aggressiveness, they are happy to be playing. They’ve given us a lot of energy and enthusiasm and that’s carried through the rest of the guys."

Wall Thinks Calipari Will Stay At Kentucky

Apr 9, 2011 2:34 PM

Wizards point guard John Wall, last year’s No. 1 overall pick -- isn’t buying the rumor about John Calipari changing jobs.

“If he makes that decision, that would be good, but I think he will stay at Kentucky,” Wall said. “That was his dream job. The Big Blue Nation is a crowd that really love college basketball; they’re the best fans I have been around. They love him there.”

Calipari, 52, has compiled a 64-12 record in two seasons with the Wildcats.

Leonsis Shows Support For Grunfeld, Saunders

Apr 8, 2011 1:21 PM

Comments from Wizards owner Ted Leonsis were the strongest show of support he's given thus far to general manager Ernie Grunfeld and head coach Flip Saunders.

In his personal blog, Leonsis wrote that he gave Grunfeld “high grades in executing upon our rebuild to date. I am excited and psyched by our quick pivot into our future.”

Then in a radio interview on 106.7 The Fan, Leonsis said he was “thrilled” with Grunfeld and “very happy” with Saunders.

“I am pretty loyal. I believe we’re in it together. And as long as we are on the same page, I think that there’s harmony in the organization,” Leonsis said.

Blatche Playing Best Basketball Of Career

Apr 7, 2011 1:14 PM

At times, Andray Blatche can be an inconsistent player who makes head-slapping on-court mistakes.

At other times, he has an on-court presence that defines effort and energy, and shows off monster prowess as a rebounder.

Since returning from missing ten games due to injury, Blatche has played the best basketball of his career.

“Dray’s caught a lot of criticism from people that he doesn’t play hard,” Wizards' head coach Flip Saunders said. “But since he’s come back [from a shoulder injury], he’s worked as hard and done more fundamental things these last few games than he has since he’s been here.”

Five Wizards Finished For Season

Apr 5, 2011 5:37 PM

Wizards coach Flip Saunders announced Tuesday that leading scorer Nick Young, forward Josh Howard, forward Rashard Lewis, guard Cartier Martin and center Hamidy N'Diaye are all done for the season, each of them nursing knee injuries.

Forward Trevor Booker was ruled out last week with a broken right foot.

"We got six guys that are done, and we are playing with nine," Saunders said . "So we are undermanned, but our guys have been competing. That's one of the reasons we have been able to win a few in a row."
