The Orlando Magic are launching a new marketing campaign built around the term “WE WILL.”
This rebranded campaign ‘turns the page’ on the next chapter in Magic history as they transition out of the Dwight Howard-era.
New general manager Rob Hennigan traded Howard to the Lakers in a blockbuster trade in August.
J.J. Redick hopes to sign a long-term contract extension with the Magic.
Redick is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in July 2013.
“I love playing here and I love playing for Orlando. I love representing our fans and our city,” Redick said. “But I understand it’s a transition year for our organization. I’ve had conversations with Rob (Hennigan) and we’re both on the same page with my future going forward. I’ve given him my commitment that as long as I’m in Orlando and wearing a Magic uniform that I’m going to be a pro and give everything like I always have. He knows that and respects that and we’ll be fine.”
Redick believes the Magic, sans Dwight Howard, can contend for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
“It’s a different experience this year, not having Dwight. I’ve spent my whole career with Dwight and not seeing him is weird,’’ Redick said. “But I like the team and I like the group that we’ve had while working out at Amway. There’s a good spirit about our team and a real professionalism about our team. There’s an excitement because we’re new and full of energy. Guys have a lot to prove – whether it’s young guys or vets – we all have something to prove.”
The Orlando Magic will be without Al Harrington, Ish Smith and Maurice Harkless when training camp begins.
All three players are recovering from offseason surgeries.
Smith and Harkless are expected to be out until mid-November.
Dwight Howard said his indecision on whether or not he would stay with Orlando was the result of trying to keep everybody happy.
"That's one of the lessons that I learned, you know. I can't make everybody happy," Howard told Ric Bucher during ESPN’s "Sunday Conversation."
"And it was a tug of war between my feelings and the fans and everybody else and their feelings and what happened to LeBron. And I saw him -- everybody hated him for leaving Cleveland and what he did," Howard said of LeBron James' free-agent move from the Cavaliers to the Heat in 2010. "I never wanted anybody to hate me, you know. I wanted everybody to love me, you know, like me, for sticking around and doing what they wanted me to do. And making everybody else happy. And that was a valuable lesson for me, you know.
"I can't make everybody happy."
Howard acknowledged his previous desire to be traded to the Nets.
"That was a team I wanted to go to," Howard said. "I felt like I could go there and write my own history. I was worried about what people would think, you know. 'If you go to L.A. everybody's going to say you're like Shaq. Everybody's going to say this about you.' And now I'm at the point where, so what, who cares what people say. This is my destiny, this is where I want to be, this is what I want to do with my life. I can’t worry about what everybody else is saying."
The Orlando Magic will give Dwight Howard's No. 12 to any player who requests it.
The Magic have done likewise with Shaquille O'Neal's No. 32, Tracy McGrady's No. 1 and Nick Anderson's No. 25.
The only jersey number retired by the Magic is No. 6, which honors their fans.
The Orlando Magic will enter training camp as a blank slate in terms of competing for the playing time decisions of Jacque Vaughn.
"I have no preconceived thoughts about guys here," Vaughn said. "I have to judge these guys on what they show me. Not on past games, not on other people's opinions, but from my opinion.
"I will give them the opportunity to show me."
Jameer Nelson is the only player with his starting spot virtually locked.
Dwight Howard took out a full-page ad in Sunday's edition of the Orlando Sentinel three weeks after being traded by the Magic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
"To play the game of basketball in the NBA is a blessing and to have had the opportunity to play before the Orlando fans for eight years was truly a privilege and an honor," Howard wrote in the ad.
"Words cannot express the love that I have for Orlando. With your support we have done great things in this city from hanging banners to impacting our youth."
Howard is seen in the ad in several photographs with fans and at charity events.
"Although my career with the Magic has come to a close, my love for the city and the people that make it beautiful will never end," wrote Howard.
When Howard opted into his contract with the Magic for the 12-13 season back in March, he expressed his love for the city of Orlando.
"My soul and everything I have is in Orlando," Howard told RealGM's Jarrod Rudolph. "I just can't leave it behind..
"The fans deserve a better hero and I will make that happen. I love and appreciate my fans and this city."
