Nets Must Acquire Howard To Keep Williams

May 30, 2012 10:47 AM

If the Nets win the lottery to select Anthony Davis, it will not be enough to sign Deron Williams as a free agent, according to sources.

"It's Dwight Howard or bust," said a league source who has spoken to Williams.

Williams doesn't want to wait for Davis to develop and won't re-sign with the team unless they become an instant contender.

The Nets believe they will be able to retain Brook Lopez in a potential trade with the Magic if they win the lottery.

Sources say Howard regrets opting into his contract and seeks a trade before the 12-13 season. But the Nets become a far less appealing destination if Williams leaves and that is why Howard's camp is putting pressure on the Magic to do a deal once a general manager is in place.

Jeff Van Gundy Criticizes 'Game Of Semantics' Played By Martins

May 26, 2012 11:09 AM

Jeff Van Gundy criticized Magic CEO Alex Martins for the way he handled the firing of his brother Stan Van Gundy.

"Listen, all you have done in your 25 years in the business is release press releases and run the business side. You don't know if a ball is blown up or stuffed," Van Gundy told ESPN Radio.

"He doesn't know one thing about basketball. So please, hold off your comments on my brother's expertise."

Dwight Howard and Martins have contended that the former had no part in Van Gundy's dismissal.

"To try to make everyone believe that Dwight Howard didn't have a part in this is absurd," said Jeff Van Gundy.

"Just say, 'we fired this guy because we feel this is our best chance to keep Dwight Howard. Dwight Howard and I decided to fire him.' To do anything else is playing a game of semantics."

Howard Denies Involvement In Van Gundy's Dismissal

May 26, 2012 10:45 AM

Dwight Howard insists that he had no role in the decision to fire Stan Van Gundy.

"I hate to see anyone lose their job," Howard told TMZ. "... Me and Stan ... we had our ups and downs ... but for the most part we had one goal ... to win a championship in Orlando, but we fell short."

Van Gundy claimed in April that Howard had been given the power to decide the fate of the coach and general manager as a condition of signing a long-term deal.

Magic CEO Alex Martins denied Howard's involvement this week.

"At no time during that time did Dwight ask me to have Stan fired," said Martins.

"I'm glad [Martins] confirmed I had nothing to do with it," Howard told TMZ.

Magic Haven't Reached Decision On Trading Howard

May 25, 2012 10:38 AM

The Magic hope the new general manager will convince Dwight Howard to sign a long-terme extension with the teams.

Two sources denied a report from Chris Sheridan that the Magic have already decided to trade Howard.

CEO Alex Martins has spoken publicly about how the franchise doesn't want to enter the 12-13 season with uncertainty about Howard's future, meaning that they will attempt to trade him if he doesn't agree to an extension.
