The New Orleans Pelicans don't have a player on their roster older than 28, but the collection of young players have a lot of experience being in the league since they were teenagers.
“When we put the group together, that was something that was important to us; of course we have a lot of young guys but we also have guys with experience,” said Dell Demps. “Look at Jrue Holiday going into his fifth year, Eric Gordon going into his sixth year, Ryan Anderson sixth year. We have guys that are young but yet experienced. I think that’s a sign of the new NBA where guys come into the league younger now. What I am hoping is these guys kind of are through the learning curve and understand the league now and take that next step.”
Anthony Davis is expected to be the cornerstone of the franchise.
“He’s really committed to getting better, which is exciting,” Demps said. “It’s fun watching the development and the commitment that he has made in the offseason and we’re seeing the dividends in training camp.”
The New Orleans Pelicans have exercised their third-year options on Anthony Davis and Austin Rivers.
Davis, the first overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, started 60 of the 64 contests he appeared in and averaged 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds,1.8 blocks and 1.2 steals in his rookie season. The 2012-13 NBA All-Rookie First Team member led all rookies in rebounds per game, blocks per game, steals per game and double-doubles.
Rivers, the tenth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, averaged 6.2 points, 2.1 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 61 contests (26 starts) throughout his rookie campaign.
The New Orleans Pelicans have waived forward Lazar Hayward.
Hayward, a product of Marquette, has appeared in 72 career NBA games with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder. The 6’6”, 225 pound forward holds career averages of 2.9 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game in 15.4 minutes.
He has appeared in two preseason games with the Pelicans and totaled two points in 15 minutes of action.
Tyreke Evans is waiting to have his left ankle evaluated further.
Evans sprained his ankle during Saturday's game and x-rays revealed no breaks.
"They are still evaluating it," Monty Williams said. "The doctors are flying in today to make sure everything is OK. I really don't have an update on it. He turned his ankle. You know how that can be."
Eric Gordon was given full clearance last week after undergoing surgery on his left ankle in May.
"Yeah this is the first time that I have felt very good in about two years for sure since I have been here," Gordon said on Monday at the Pelicans' media day. "Since I have been here I have been injured here and there and had surgeries each year. So it's the first time that I have been pretty healthy since I have been here."
Gordon has played in just 51 games over the past two seasons since being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans.
"I've been with the team for about two weeks," Gordon said. "I did all the running and the basketball workouts. But now it's time for me to progress because I am going to have a slow buildup as this training camp (continues) because it's different from what I have been doing this summer to what we are going to be doing now."
