Heat Lose Head For Season With Broken Hand

Mar 31, 2009 4:44 PM

Heat guard Luther Head broke his hand against the Magic on Monday night and will miss four-to-six weeks of action.

"I was shocked that it was broken," Head said. "I was trying to pop it back into place. It didn't feel like a break."

Surgery isn't required, but the time frame will keep him out through at least the first round of the playoffs.

"Luther was just getting into the flow of things," teammate Dwyane Wade said. "We just have to have somebody else step up."

Spoelstra: Heat Rotation Isn't Set

Mar 30, 2009 5:30 PM

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra prefers an eight-man rotation, but admitted that his team doesn't always lend itself to such streamlining.

"As much as all of us want to solidify it, I just don't know if that's realistic with this roster," Spoelstra said. "We try to get a concrete rotation, [but] somebody will step up and [the rotation] changes."

Heat To Retire Mourning's No. 33 Monday

Mar 29, 2009 6:57 PM

The Heat will officially retire Alonzo Mourning's No. 33 before Monday's game against the Magic.

"To have an organization recognize your accomplishments and honor you for your contribution, it's a humbling moment," Mourning said. "There's not a lot of people who have an opportunity to experience that. And being the first, it's going to be tremendously humbling. It'll be very difficult for me to hold back my emotions, because as a player, you never want it to end."

Monday's game was chosen so that Magic assistant Patrick Ewing, a good friend and fellow Georgetown alum, could be in attendance.

Spoelstra: We're Not Going To Be Obsessed With Playoff Race

Mar 29, 2009 10:33 AM

Miami coach Erik Spoelstra insists that his team isn't going to become obsessed with the playoff race for the middle seeds in the Eastern Conference.

"We have to focus on what we're doing, our game, number one," Spoelstra said before Saturday's game. "But there's a reality: We're all fans, we all look at it. But we're not going to be obsessed."

The Heat currently hold the fifth seed in the East, but are just a game ahead of the 76ers with a little less than ten games remaining.

Wade Needs One Block To Set NBA Record

Mar 25, 2009 4:12 PM

Heat guard Dwyane Wade needs just one more block to reach 100 for the season, something no player 6'4" or shorter has ever accomplished in the NBA.

Wade said he realized going into the season that he'd have to play bigger than he truly is in Miami.

"I understood our team wasn't big," he said. "But I knew I always had pretty good timing and athletic ability. So I said, 'Why not try?' "

He entered Wednesday night's game against Indiana tied with David Thompson, who also stood 6'4", for the current record of 99.

Wade Won't Practice For Rest Of Season

Dwyane Wade isn't expected to practice with the Heat for the remainder of the regular season, 13 games in 22 days, because of a variety of ailments.

"We are going to manage his body as best as we can," coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Wade missed a game against Boston last week because of a sore hip, and also has a sore left knee.

LeBron Hints That He'd Like To Play With Wade

Mar 23, 2009 8:55 AM

LeBron James was asked about his relationship with fellow MVP candidate Dwyane Wade this weekend, and hinted that he wouldn't mind playing alongside the former Finals MVP.

"I don't know, it doesn't matter," James said about both player's pending free agency. "Whatever happens, we'll go against each other, and maybe we'll go against each other in practice. I don't know, that'd be fun, wouldn't it?"

James and Wade can both opt out of their contracts in 2010.

Potentially, both Cleveland and Miami could make room to re-sign their franchise player and sign another top-level free agent.

Pistons Claim Referees Favor Wade

Mar 23, 2009 8:49 AM

Pistons coach Michael Curry was ejected in the final seconds of Sunday's loss to the Heat, and a few players commented on the officiating after the game.

Detroit was upset that a foul wasn't called on Dwyane Wade as Rodney Stuckey drove to the basket on the team's final possession.

"They were calling us for those same fouls all game long, riding Wade to the basket," said Tayshaun Prince. "You can see why Coach Curry got thrown out the game because of that situation, and we felt what D-Wade did to Stuckey at the end of the game, they were calling us for those fouls on the other end over the course of the game.

"Obviously you know in late-game situations they are going to try to let us play, but I think you saw the inconsistency there when Stuck drove on that play and got rode all the way to the basket, and that was pretty much the game right there."

Wade blocked Stuckey's shot, but the Pistons felt as though there was significant contact.

"I guess the ref saw it different," said Stuckey. "I thought I went to the basket aggressively while he had 10 of his fingers on me and they didn't call the foul.

"He's an All-Star so I guess you are going to get those calls."

Wade Unsure Of When He'll Return

Mar 20, 2009 10:27 AM

Heat guard Dwyane Wade isn't sure when he'll be able to return from a strained right hip.

He missed his first game of the season on Wednesday night against the Celtics because of the injury.

"I just try to be smart about it and see how I feel," Wade said Thursday, indicating that he won't rush back.

Wade said he'll be a game-time decision for Friday's game against the Nets.
