Ivan Johnson Signs One-Year Contract With China's Golden Bulls

Aug 29, 2013 10:29 AM

With no NBA out clause, Ivan Johnson has signed a one-year contract with the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of the Chinese Basketball Association, a league source told RealGM.

Johnson, the 6-foot-8 free agent forward, received interest throughout NBA free agency, and his four finalists were the Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls, a source said. He decided to accept a more lucrative deal in China – where he spent the 2011 season – instead of continuing to wait for an organization to enhance its offer.

Johnson also is hoping to take advantage of China’s shorter season and return to the States late in the NBA season, when teams will deal with possible injuries and look to add pieces.

There remains strong interest in Johnson, and the 29-year-old took a deal for one season in order to return next year. RealGM first reported on Aug. 16 that Johnson had started to seriously consider leaving the NBA for offers in China and Italy.

Johnson averaged 6.5 points and 3.9 rebounds over two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, carving a role as an active, tough big man after bouncing around in his basketball career.

Rivers: Clippers Need To Run More, Learn How To Close Games, Space Offensively

Aug 23, 2013 1:10 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers have two perennial All-NBA players in Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, and now have one of the best coaches in the league in Doc Rivers.

"The expectations are great," said Rivers. "I don't want us to shrink from that at all. I don't want us to run from that, but what we've got to get our guys to understand is expectations are one thing. Realization is a whole different thing, and just because you're expected to do anything doesn't mean you've arrived.

"We have not arrived. We didn't win a playoff series last year. So we have a lot of work to do as a group. We should expect to do that work. We have to expect that it's going to be much harder and we have to embrace it and do it."

Rivers has analyzed Clippers' game films from last season and also talked to players working out at their facility. Rivers doesn't see the need to make major changes, crediting Vinny Del Negro for providing a solid foundation.

"Listen, they won 56 games, so they're not all bad," Rivers said. "That's why I'm watching all the films, because there are things that you absolutely want to continue to do. Vinny did so many good things here. And you want to continue to do some of those things, and then you want to add some of the areas where you think you can make improvements.

"As athletic as we are, we didn't run enough. We have to get up and down the floor more offensively. We have to do a better job of our spacing offensively. And we have to find a way to close games. Over anything, that's what stands out. We have to execute as a group better. Each guy has to buy into that execution, and so there's things we have to do."

Caron Butler: No One From Clippers Called About Trade

Aug 22, 2013 6:20 PM

Caron Butler was traded to the Phoenix Suns in the trade that brought J.J. Redick and Jared Dudley to Los Angeles, and he says no one from the Clippers' front office has called him at any point since -- about the trade or simply to say thanks.

“I don’t leave with bitterness or anything, but a phone call would have helped the situation,” Butler said. “But it’s cool, it’s no hard feelings because that’s the nature of the business."

Butler was part of the Clippers' historic year last season.

“It’s a fun team to watch,” Butler continued. “Up-and-down tempo, you look at the high flyers of Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan and you’ve got a magician with the ball in Chris Paul. You got shooters around them, you got J.J. Redick, and a great coach and a great coaching staff. You look at that and that’s real appealing, and that’s Hollywood.”

Lou Amundson Meets With Clippers, Lakers

Aug 16, 2013 7:03 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers were the two teams that Lou Amundson visited this week and discussions went positively with both organizations, agent Mark Bartelstein told RealGM on Friday.

Amundson had met with a couple teams last week and sat down with two more within the past few days, and the 6-foot-9 forward is continuing dialogue with interested teams in hopes of landing a deal soon.

“They were good meetings,” Bartelstein said. “I wouldn’t quite use the word frontrunner right now, but there’s interest, and hopefully we can get something done soon.”

Amundson, 30, averaged nearly two points and three rebounds a season ago and would bolster a team’s frontcourt. He has played for eight teams over a seven-year NBA career.
