The Los Angeles Clippers waived point guard Sam Cassell on Thursday.
In 38 games played this season, Cassell averaged 12.8 points, 4.7 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 25.7 minutes per game. In his 15th NBA season, Cassell had missed the last four games with a sprained right wrist while missing 12 games earlier in the season with a strained left calf.
?After weighing all of the options and after conversations with Sam, we believe this is the best solution for this team,? stated Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor. ?We know and appreciate the many contributions Sam made during the last three years, and we wish him nothing but the best.?

Sam Cassell is rumored to be on the verge of agreeing to terms with the Clippers on a buyout, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The agreement could be finalized by Thursday, and the team appears poised to sign Ronald Murray to replace Cassell.
The Los Angeles Clippers today signed free agent forward Nick Fazekas to a 10-day contract. Drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round (34th overall selection) of the 2007 NBA Draft, Fazekas appeared in four games with Dallas this season, averaging 1.0 point and 0.8 rebounds.
A three-time Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Player of the Year at the University of Nevada, Fazekas played 28 games with the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Development League this season and was selected to the D-League All-Star Game but did not play in the game. Fazekas averaged 19.1 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.0 steal while shooting 53 percent from the floor per game.
While the Clippers deal with injuries, they will probably sign 6-foot-11 forward Nick Fazekas to a 10-day contract, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Fazekas was waived by Dallas following the Jason Kidd trade.
An NBA source told the Boston Globe on Tuesday night that the buyout talks between the Clippers and Sam Cassell have hit a snag.

According to the Boston Globe, Sam Cassell and the L.A. Clippers are set to announce that the two sides have reached a buyout, allowing Cassell to join the team of his choice.

David Falk is still working with the Clippers to get Sam Cassell out of his contract and into Boston green, the L.A. Times is reporting.
According to the Times, Cassell was seemingly at a loss for words at practice Tuesday. "I don't know. It's getting to a point . . . ," he said, his voice trailing off.
"I'm being a professional about it. I've been a professional my whole career. I was taught that way early in my career with Clyde Drexler, Kenny Smith how to be professional in any situation or any crises."
With time running out as the league heads into its mandated Saturday deadline, Sam Cassell finally admitted on Monday that he is in negotiations with the Clippers on a buyout, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"They've been discussing it, so what more can I say?" Cassell told the Times.
"Both parties are getting to a number and saying, 'OK, this is what we'll do it for.' I just want to be treated fairly."
The Clippers are leaning towards buying out the contract of point guard Sam Cassell, according to the Daily News in Los Angeles.
The organization realizes that Cassell's heart is no longer in L.A., and there seems to be no reason to keep him around with the Clippers nearly eliminated from the playoff hunt.
Clippers' Coach Mike Dunleavy told the News, "You have between now and March 1 where you're going to see guys who could potentially get bought out of deals. Certain things can happen. We're looking at all of those potential situations and looking for opportunities that could help us."
The Suns' efforts to land Quinton Ross from the Clippers failed, the East Valley Tribune is reporting, and Phoenix now turns its attention to signing a free agent.
Free agent candidates are Linton Johnson or Bobby Jones, but either would likely get only a 10-day contract.
