Auditioning for capspace?

Apr 13, 2003 8:50 AM

Chris Tomasson of the Rocky Mountain News and Marc J. Spears of the Denver Post report: Last night in Denver, the Los Angeles Clippers pounded the Denver Nuggets 101-79. However, that wasn't the story on everyone's minds after the game.

This summer, the Nuggets will have around $18 million incapspace and their were a few players on the opposing team that want a chunk of it.

They are Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Andre Miller, Lamar Odom, and Michael Olowokandi. All but the latter will be restricted free agents, meaning the Clippers can match any offer to them.

Still, all of them seem to like the idea of playing in Denver.

"I'm going to listen to whatever is going on and try to make the best decision, not just financially, but for my career and everything else," said Brand.

Brand also believes Corey Maggette is the player most likely to leave for the Nuggets.

"The guys were giving Corey Maggette a lot of stuff," said Brand. "We were telling him to go check out your new facilities."

Maggette didn't deny his interest in Denver.

"I'll consider any team that has an interest," said Maggette, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds. "I'll still consider the Clippers. I've been in (Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe's) camp (in the Los Angeles area). Kiki's a good guy. He knows a lot about the game. He gets you prepared."

Andre Miller said he would have to wait and see.

"We'll see who (Denver) brings in," said Miller, "I heard they got committed management. We'll see what type of players and attitudes they bring in and go from there."

Lamar Odom also mentioned his interest.

"They are going to have a good team in a nice city," said Odom, who almost had a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. "You can tell that they're changing things around here. They are really coming out and still playing hard. They took Sacramento down to the buzzer (Friday night). You can tell management here wants to win."

Michael Olowokandi's agent, Bill Duffy thinks his client would be a great addition for the Nuggets.

"Denver would be a great fit," Duffy said. "If Denver gets a high draft pick and makes a good move by getting Olowokandi, that would be give them a large front line of Olowokandi, Nene Hilario and Marcus Camby in a zone (defense)."

In the end, Olowokandi and Maggette are the most likely to go to Denver.

As for the other Clippers, Miller is probably going to Utah with Brand and Odom likely staying with the Nuggets.

So, what does Nuggets GM Kiki Vandeweghe think of all of this?

"It is going to be an interesting summer," Vandeweghe said. "It should be a lot of fun."

Odom Wants to be a Knick

Apr 7, 2003 10:20 AM

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reports: Lamar Odom is long, skilled and, best of all, available. His first preference is to re-sign with the Clippers this summer but Odom revealed that if given the opportunity to return home he would accept the Knicks' mid level exception.

"That's the one team where I could see myself signing for that," Odom said after helping the Clippers defeat the Knicks Saturday night. "It's New York."

As Knick fans start to get their hopes up, it's worth noting that Odom will be a restricted free agent this summer. Even a cheap guy like Donald T. Sterling would pounce on the chance to get Odom under a six year contract at that price.

Knicks interest Odom

Apr 7, 2003 8:58 AM

Chris Broussard of the New York Times reports: Clippers swingman Lamar Odom, who will be become a restricted free agent at season's end, is interested in becoming a member of the New York Knicks.

Odom said he would even be willing to take the Mid-Level Exception, which is projected to be between $4.6-to-$4.9 million next season, to play in New York.

?I would listen to them,? said Odom, who is averaging 14.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists in his fourth season in the NBA.?That?s the one team where I could see myself signing for that. It?s New York. But I would think the Clippers would match that.?

However, even though he would love to play in New York, his loyalty is with the Clippers.

?My loyalty is to the Clippers for being loyal to me,? Odom said. ?We?ll have to see in July, but hopefully the Clippers want me back.?

Kandi done for season but maybe not with Clippers

Apr 4, 2003 8:47 AM

Art Thompson III of the Orange County Register reports: Clippers center Michael Olowokandi is officially done for the season but prehaps not as a Clipper.

The final conclusion on his season ending came when yesterday when Trainer Jasen Powell told Coach Dennis Johnson on that Olowokandi would be out at least four more weeks. With less than two left in the regular season, it dashed any hopes of him returning this season from his left knee injury.

Olowokandi has been out since Feb.3 and has missed 29 games because of the injury.

"I'm a little disappointed because it would have been nice to come back and play with E.B. (Elton Brand), Lamar (Odom) and the guys," Olowokandi said. "But I'm extremely happy that the doctor was finally able to pinpoint the problem I was having. My primary focus now is getting my knee 100 percent healthy."

However, Olowokandi did not rule out returning to the Clippers next season.

"The only way I'll leave Los Angeles is if the Clippers clearly told me that while they enjoyed my services, that they were not interested in bringing me back," he said. "For me, the door is always going to be open. But if they don't want me back, then all I can say is that it's been great, and it would be time for me to pursue opportunities elsewhere."

Olowokandi and his agent Bill Duffy also downplayed the notion that he is a lock to go to Miami.

"It has nothing whatsoever to do with signing with Miami,'' Duffy said. "He likes it down there. He has a home in London and he'll probably keep his home in L.A., too."

Olowokandi said, "Anybody trying to read into something like me buying a home in Miami is just looking for a story. I've been looking to buy a home down there for three years now. I know what it might look like, but anyone saying that I'm headed to the Miami Heat just because I bought a house, that's pure speculation on their part.''

Brand is not enough

Apr 2, 2003 2:13 PM

Utah's future Hall of Fame tandem of guard John Stockton and Karl Malone, who have been running the pick and roll for nearly 20 years together, made it work in the game's pivotal moment. A Stockton-to-Malone pass resulted in a basket that sparked Utah's victory in front of 17,531 at Staples Center.

Clippers still have no solution to Jazz

Apr 2, 2003 8:25 AM

In another annual sign that spring is here, the Utah Jazz visited Los Angeles, did nothing spectacular and walked away with a victory.

For a seventh consecutive season, the Clippers were unable to beat the Jazz in L.A. as Utah used sound fundamentals to defeat them 94-89 in front of 17,531 Tuesday night at Staples Center.

The Clippers had one brief, fourth-quarter lead, 86-85, with 1:10 left. But the Jazz responded with a jump shot by John Stockton and steal and layup by Matt Harpring with 38.4 seconds left to take a 89-86 lead and control of the game.

"When Stockton made that jumper, I couldn't believe it," Clippers forward Elton Brand said. "But on second thought, I did believe it because I've seen it 100 times."

Jazz edge Clippers

Apr 2, 2003 8:24 AM

Karl Malone scored 25 points and Matt Harpring had 17 as the Utah Jazz beat the Los Angeles Clippers 95-89 Tuesday night.

Elton Brand, the Clippers' leading scorer and rebounder, returned to action after missing 18 games with a stress fracture above his right ankle. Brand, who helped the Clippers end a 26-game winless streak against the Jazz in Utah earlier this season, finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds in 31 minutes.

John Stockton had 12 points and 10 assists, helping lead the Jazz to their seventh win in eight games and 21st in their last 24 meetings with the Clippers.

Clippers Miss Chance to Help Roommates

Apr 2, 2003 8:22 AM

It must really annoy the Lakers that they have to share their plush new home with Los Angeles' other, less-successful team. Because as roommates go, the Clippers are the NBA equivalent of all those inconsiderate slobs you were assigned to share space with in college.

The Clippers had an opportunity Tuesday to do their elite neighbors a big favor: Take advantage of the Jazz's sloppy and sometimes confused play and knock them behind the Lakers into seventh place in the Western Conference. But the Clippers reverted to their own bumbling, last-place style when it mattered, allowing the Jazz to hang on to sixth by winning for the seventh time in eight games, 94-89 in the Staples Center.

The Jazz improved to 8-0 in this building against the Clippers, but it took far longer than it should have to put away a team clearly just playing out the season's dreary final weeks. The Clippers, who trailed most of the game, even rallied to take an 86-85 lead with a minute to go.

Kandi likely done for season

Apr 1, 2003 7:16 AM

Elliott Teaford of the Los Angeles Times reports: It doesn't look like Clippers center Michael Olowokandi will play again this season.

Olowokandi, who had surgery on his left knee on February 3rd, still cannot run and the team is not giving a clear answer as to whether or not Olowokandi will play in any of the team's final nine games.

"Yes, he is progressing and he's ahead of where he was last week or the week before,"Clippers head coach Dennis Johnson said.

However, when asked if he expected Olowokandi to play again this season, Johnson didn't give a clear response.

"I can't answer that." said Johnson.

All in all, it sounds as if Olowokandi is on the shelf for the rest of the season.
