Raptors Could Sign Bobby Brown

Jul 30, 2010 4:44 PM

Bobby Brown continues to draw interest from the Raptors, who he played for at the summer league in Las Vegas.

ESPN.com's Marc Stein writes that Toronto is the most likely team to sign the point guard.

However, the Raptors have two point guards (Marcus Banks and Jose Calderon) that they have unsuccessfully tried to deal.

Bargnani Views Bosh's Departure As An Opportunity

Jul 30, 2010 7:48 AM

Raptors forward Andrea Bargnani was the team's second option last season, but figures to have a more prominent role with Chris Bosh gone.

"For sure he leaves a big hole because he's a very good player. We're going to miss him because he's an All-Star," Bargnani told HoopsHype.

"Playing with him makes it easier for everybody, but we gotta play and it's an opportunity for me and other players to step up and to do something more."

With Toronto needing him to take the next step, Bargnani feels as though he's capable.

"I got better every year. You cannot ask more than that. But you always want more, so I'm not satisfied. I mean, I'm satisfied with my career, but I don't feel like I've arrived. I feel like I have to keep working and do much more than what I've done."

Bosh Claims Decision To Leave Toronto Came Late

Jul 30, 2010 7:22 AM

After being called a quitter by Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo, Chris Bosh says he always played hard for Toronto.

Bosh, who left for the Heat earlier this month, responded to allegations made by Colangelo on Toronto radio station FAN 590 that claimed the All-Star was "checked out" late last season and chose not to play some of the Raptors' final games.

"I play this game as hard as I can every time I step on the court," Bosh said. "On the back of my jersey it says 'Bosh' ... The Boshes are hard workers. We have a lot of pride in what we do, in our jobs and in life."

He also claimed his decision to leave Toronto came at the end of a long process and was not something he had committed to before the offseason.

"Everybody thinks, 'Oh, he was gone as soon as the season was over,' " he said. "It was the hardest decision I ever had to make. As different as another country is, it was still home for me. I had been there for seven years."

Raptors Announce Addition Of Kleiza

Jul 27, 2010 7:57 AM

The Raptors officially signed forward Linas Kleiza to a multiyear contract on Monday.

Toronto acquired the rights to Kleiza more than a week ago when Denver opted not to match the team's offer sheet.

Kleiza played with the Greek club Olympiakos last year after four seasons with the Nuggets.

Colangelo Hints Bosh Checked Out On Raptors

Jul 27, 2010 7:49 AM

Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo had some pointed comments to make about Chris Bosh during an interview with Toronto's FAN 590 on Monday.

Bosh left for the Heat in free agency, although the Raptors were able to work a sign-and-trade for some long-term assets.

"We tried in vain to put pieces around Chris. Different pieces, different styles. It didn't work out," Colangelo said of building a roster around his former cornerstone.

"No matter what type of player we brought in, it didn't seem to have the right mix with him as that centerpiece."

Colangelo also hinted that Bosh checked out on the team near the end of the 2009-10 season, knowing his career in Toronto was likely over.

"Despite limited swelling and any excessive damage on an MRI, he felt like he needed to sit for six more games ... I'm not even questioning Chris' injury. I'm telling you he was cleared to play subject to tolerance on his part, and the tolerance just apparently wasn't there and he chose not to play," Colangelo continued.

"The fact that our season was spiraling downward and we were hoping he'd come back sooner and we were also dealing with a few other things at that point ... we were really struggling there."

Colangelo didn't stop there.

"Whether he was mentally checked out or just wasn't quite into it down the stretch, he wasn't the same guy. I think everybody saw that, but no one wanted to acknowledge it," he continued.

"At the same time, I never felt we were quite in the game (in terms of signing Bosh to a new contract). There was too much out there, too much built up for him to take an easy out here, and he decided to do that."

Scola Would Have Considered Going To Toronto

Jul 22, 2010 7:55 AM

Rockets forward Luis Scola recently agreed to a five-year, $47 million deal to remain in Houston.

However, when his future was somewhat in doubt he says he would have considered agreeing to a sign-and-trade to Toronto had the Rockets been able to land Chris Bosh.

"I tried not to think about it," Scola said. "If you want to be in sign-and-trade, I would have to say yes.

"I wanted to play in the NBA. This contract guarantees I'm going to play in the NBA a lot more years, seven or eight years overall. I think that for me means a lot. I reached a goal. I knew Houston wanted me here. I knew it was going to be done somehow."

Raptors Face Competition For Barnes

Jul 21, 2010 7:36 AM

Five teams remain in the running to sign free-agent forward Matt Barnes, according to sources.

The Raptors are still one of those teams, despite the unlikelihood of a sign-and-trade with the Magic that Barnes thought would be completed by now.

In addition to the Raptors, Barnes is weighing interest from the Cavaliers, Heat, Celtics and Lakers.

Barnes announced on his Twitter feed Monday night that he was headed to Toronto, but the deal feel through when it became apparent that the Magic had limited sign-and-trade options.

"It's something we've discussed and talked about," Magic general manager Otis Smith told the Orlando Sentinel on Tuesday when asked about the sign-and-trade talks with Toronto.

"At this point nothing has happened," Smith continued, "and I don't really anticipate anything happening."

Barnes To Raptors Hits Major Snag

Jul 20, 2010 8:54 AM

Matt Barnes announced on Monday night that he is going to sign with the Raptors.

However, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports that Orlando's limited sign-and-trade options may scuttle the deal, according to sources.

Barnes is expecting to sign a two-year, $10 million deal.

The Raptors and Magic will resume discussions on a sign-and-trade Tuesday. However, because of the financial standing of both clubs, it's possible that Barnes may have to agree to new terms.

Toronto recently spent the bulk of its $5.8 million mid-level exception to sign Linas Kleiza. They don't have the available funds to sign Barnes outright to a deal that starts in the neighborhood of $4 million.

The Magic are prevented by salary-cap rules from starting a sign-and-trade deal for Barnes at higher than $2 million, because Orlando doesn't have Barnes' full Bird rights after employing him for only one season.
