Gregg Popovich Has No Regrets For Asking San Antonio Crowd To Not Boo Kawhi Leonard

Nov 24, 2023 10:03 PM

Gregg Popovich said he has no regrets for asking the home crowd of the San Antonio Spurs to not boo Kawhi Leonard during Wednesday's game.

"Absolutely not," Popovich said Friday night. "It's pretty easy to understand. I listened to it for a while and it just got louder and louder and uglier and uglier, and I felt sorry for him, and I was embarrassed for our city, for our organization.

"Because that's not who we are, that's not how we've conducted ourselves for the last 25 years. It's the opposite of the way we've conducted ourselves, the way we've worked in the community."

Leonard was traded by the Spurs to the Toronto Raptors in 2018.

"It's kind of an indication of the world we live in today. It was hateful," Popovich said. "It was really disrespectful, it was just mean-spirited. We're the team that when somebody comes back to town after having been a Spur, so you first come back to town, we show a video of them. I can remember when Kawhi and Danny Green came back from Toronto, we showed videos of those guys and the crowd didn't react like that. That tells the whole story, and now it's five years later, six years later, and that's going to happen."

Gregg Popovich Asked Spurs Fans To Stop Booing Kawhi Leonard

Nov 23, 2023 9:44 AM

San Antonio Spurs fans like to let Kawhi Leonard have it when he visits his former team. San Antonio fans loudly boo Leonard when he's introduced, touches the ball and shoots free throws. Gregg Popovich took it into his own hands to try to change that behavior.

While Leonard was shooting free throws, Popovich grabbed the public address microphone to implore Spurs fans to stop booing.

"Excuse me for a second," Popovich said. "Can we stop all the booing and let these guys play? Have a little class. That’s not who we are. Knock off the booing."

Postgame, Popovich said he was trying to make sure the fans "didn't poke the bear". He offered no other explanation for asking fans to stop booing. Leonard seemed undisturbed by the fans' reaction.

“If I don’t have a Spurs jersey on, they’re probably going to boo me the rest of my career. But I mean it is what it is. Like I said, they’re one of the best fans in the league and they’re very competitive," Leonard said. "Once I step out on this basketball court out here, they show that they’re going for the other side. When I’m on the streets or going into restaurants, they show love. So it is what it is.”

Zach LaVine Prefers Lakers, Heat, Sixers As Trade Destination

Nov 17, 2023 11:37 PM

Zach LaVine reportedly prefers to get traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, or the Philadelphia 76ers, sources told Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports.

LaVine is also interested in the Spurs and the Kings as a destination.

Sources add that LaVine does not view the Bulls roster as competitive, and is also looking to play under a different coach.

There is a belief around the league that a LaVine trade wouldn't happen until later in the season.

The Lakers, Heat, and Sixers have all registered interest in LaVine.
