Lakers, Kings Front Runners To Land Nate?

Jun 29, 2009 3:55 PM

The Lakers and Kings appear to be the front runners to land guard Nate Robinson, a restricted free agent of the Knicks.

Sacramento was reportedly close to swinging a deal that involved Robinson and Jared Jeffries at February's trading deadline, but talks between the Kings and Knicks fell through.

It's possible that the two teams could rekindle talks this summer.

The Lakers was rumored to have inquired about Robinson after he scored 33 points at the Staples Center in December, and both Kobe Bryant and Jerry Buss gushed about the guard after the mid-December game.

Kings Looking To Add Size In Free Agency

Jun 26, 2009 5:35 PM

Free agency begins Wednesday in the NBA, and the Kings will be looking to add a big man.

Sacramento drafted Tyreke Evans, Omir Casspi and Jon Brockman in Thursday night's NBA Draft.

"I think we need to try to add some additional size up front," Kings general manager Geoff Petrie told the Sacramento Bee.

The Kings have Ike Diogu, who will be a restricted free agent in just a few days, as an option.

"We're not allowed to talk about free agents until July 1," Petrie said. "I guess we'll talk about that then."

Kings Appear To Favor Evans Over Rubio

Jun 25, 2009 7:17 AM

The Kings are reportedly leaning towards Memphis guard Tyreke Evans with the fourth overall pick.

According to the Sacramento Bee, Evans, Jonny Flynn, Stephen Curry and Ricky Rubio are all high the team's list.

Rubio worked out for the Kings on Monday, but new coach Paul Westphal said that they aren't set on the Spanish point guard.

"We wanted to get a feel for just interacting with him, watching him up close," Westphal said. "(But) is there anything that's going to tip the scale as to whether we draft Ricky Rubio or not from that workout? Absolutely not.

"It was nice for us to be able to spend some time with him, and it was impossible to do anything that would either help or hurt himself, really, in one hour of shooting around in the gym."

Knicks Optimistic About Trading Up To Nab Rubio?

Jun 22, 2009 3:24 PM

Frank Isola reports that Donnie Walsh and his Knick front office "remain optimistic that they can trade up" to select Ricky Rubio on draft night.

Walsh praised Jonny Flynn in talking with the media today.  "He's a great athlete. If you need a point guard, you can go with him," he said.

Of Tyreke Evans, Walsh said:  "He's powerful. He's got a great handle and if he has an opening, he's strong."

Isola speculates that the Knicks could swap picks with the Kings to take Sacramento's 4th selection, although it is not clear for whom they would do so other than Rubio.

Westphal: It's An Exciting Time For Kings

Jun 13, 2009 8:53 AM

The Kings introduced Paul Westphal as their latest head coach on Friday.

Sacramento finished 17-65 this past season, and decided not to retain interim coach Kenny Natt, who had taken over for Reggie Theus upon his firing in December.

"I feel like because of the way the last few seasons have gone, this is a clean slate," Westphal said, according to the Associated Press. "The ability to build a team with not having to make compromises [makes it] just an exciting time to join the Kings."

The Kings have had four coaches in the last three years.

"I think you will find [Westphal] to be very discerning and very committed as a coach," executive Geoff Petrie said. "We are all looking forward to working together and getting us all back on track. ... He's been associated with winning, [and] I think he understands the challenges of the job that we have with our team. He was enthusiastic when we first talked to him about the job, and now he's got the job."

Rambis Speaks Out On Kings Job

Jun 10, 2009 9:53 PM

Kurt Rambis took to the airwaves on Wednesday, one day after the Kings hired Paul Westphal for their head coaching gig.  Rambis had been considered the favorite to land the job.

"I really did not want to focus on it (the Kings' coaching situation)," said Rambis.  "They put some sort of timetable there. I understand that they wanted to move forward in their coaching search, but really what it came down to was that they have a bunch of young players on their team. It's a project team. As it stands right now, that team is - particularly in the Western Conference - is a ways away from winning.

"They have holes in their roster, and they certainly have to improve as a ballclub if they expect to win. And I was just looking to be involved with that team for a longer term than what the Sacramento Kings were looking for. I think that that's basically what it came down to. I like the Kings organization, I like Geoff Petrie as a general manager. The Maloofs are good owners, but my vision and their vision just didn't coincide, so I decided to turn their offer down and they moved in another direction."
