Orlando GM swears he has a plan

Jul 26, 2004 3:20 AM

Whether anyone likes it or not, the Orlando Magic game plan has become clear as spring water, as consistent as Reggie Miller on the free-throw line.

Magic General Manager John Weisbrod -- in his first summer on the job -- decided substance, not style, was what he wanted, battlers, not big names and familiar faces in the lineup.

Every major personnel decision he has made since last season has been an unpopular one, often flying against traditional NBA thinking, angering some of the Magic's most fanatical fans.

But he is reshaping the franchise without compromise, staying with a recurring theme that is seen in every move. Love it or hate it, the plan invites scrutiny, causes controversy.

"I don't care about popularity," Weisbrod said. "Whether they [decisions] are well-received or not, that's sort of irrelevant. At the end of the day, the only thing that's well-received is winning, and that's what I'm trying to do."

"I don't know if those [moves] say anything. You can make moves that everyone thinks are great, but then you lose, and they're not so great," he said. "Or you can make moves that don't seem so great at the time, but you win, and things change."

"We were lacking a lot of intangibles that in my experience I've found to be essential to winning, so it wasn't very surprising that we weren't winning [last season]," he said. "That's why I'm excited about our identity being different now."

Teams throughout the NBA are watching the Magic completely reshuffle the roster, wondering where it will end. At least one competing NBA coach, though, likes what Weisbrod has done, especially with McGrady.

"So many GMs are too busy kissing up to the star player that they can't see the big picture," said the coach, who didn't want his name used. "The old saying that it's easier to change one coach than a whole team of players didn't fit in Orlando. He did it the hard way. Coaches dream about working for a GM who will support them like that."

Orlando trades Gooden, Varejao for Tony Battie

Jul 23, 2004 2:33 PM

According to NBA sources, the Cavaliers have traded veteran forward Tony Battie and future draft picks to the Orlando Magic for forwards Drew Gooden, Steven Hunter and Anderson Varejao. The trade is expected to become official later today.

Gooden, who averaged 11.6 points and 6.5 rebounds last season, would replace Carlos Boozer as the Cavaliers' starting power forward. Hunter is a backup forward/center and averaged 3.2 points and 2.9 reboubds last season. Varejao was the Magic's second-round draft pick this season and is a forward from Spain.

Battie came to the Cavaliers in the Ricky Davis trade last season and averaged 5.6 points and 4.9 rebounds in 50 games with the Cavs.

Mavericks, Magic talking trade

Jul 23, 2004 9:57 AM

According to the Fort Worth Star Telegram the Orlando Magic and the Dallas Mavericks are discussing a potential deal which would see young forward Drew Gooden move to Texas in exchange for either Jerry Stackhouse or Christian Laettner, both of whom arrived via the draft night deal with the Washington Wizards, as part of a multiplayer deal.

Laettner, who is in the last year of his contract, would provide the Magic with cap relief once the season is over while Jerry Stackhouse would add additional scoring help for new star Steve Francis.

It is speculated that either deal may need to include Magic center Andrew Declercq for it to work under league rules.

The Mavericks have also had discussions with the Celtics about a potential sign and trade for center Chris Mihm, but a deal is unlikely due to salaries.

Howard Goes for 26 in Summer League Game

Jul 18, 2004 8:26 PM

The #1 pick in the 2004 NBA draft, Dwight Howard, torched the Celtics for 26 points, helping Orlando to a 119-106 victory.

Many have been skeptical of Howard, saying he is not physically ready to play in the league; however this last outing is a step in the right direction.

Delonte West had 20 points for the C's, while Keith Bogans had 38 for Orlando and Snap Hunter added 21. Bogans made 4-of-6 treys and 13-of-17 overall as his club shot 57 percent.
