Doc Rivers and the Celtics Victorious in Orlando Return

Nov 30, 2004 3:40 AM

In Doc Rivers return to Orlando, he got a victory for his players, and his players won one for their coach.

Rivers steered his team back on course while gaining a measure of revenge on his old squad, and the Boston Celtics snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Orlando Magic 117-101 on Monday night.

The Magic fired Rivers a year ago, after four-plus seasons, when the team stumbled out to a 1-10 start. Rivers, the NBA's coach of the year in 2001, had a 171-168 record with three trips to the playoffs.

But he insisted there was nothing personal about beating his former team.

"For me, I just kept it on the guys," Rivers said. "It couldn't be about me. It had to be about the players, and the players answered tonight."

While Rivers deflected inquiries about his return, his players knew what it meant to him.

"I know Doc is feeling pretty good about this team and the fact they let him go this year," said Paul Pierce, whose 24 points led seven players in double figures. "It worked out for him and the team tonight."

"They attack the basket, so we thought if we could get stops and get up and down the court, then we could beat them before they set their defense," Rivers said. "That was something we saw on film that we could take advantage of, but the key was getting stops first."

Pacers Battle the Magic With Just Six Players

Nov 21, 2004 4:19 AM

With only six players because of suspensions and injuries, the Indiana Pacers stayed close before dropping an 86-83 decision to the Orlando Magic on Saturday night.

"We had guys who had never played as a unit in an NBA game," Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said. "I'm disappointed. We went out there to win the game, even given these unusual circumstances."

With leading scorers Ron Artest, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson suspended indefinitely by the NBA earlier in the day following the fight in Detroit, the Pacers started a lineup of reserves and managed to stay with the Magic.

Grant Hill hit four free throws in the final 12 seconds and finished with 28 points to lead Orlando.

"Coming off the events of (Friday) night right away instead of having a few days in between probably helped them," Hill said. "I didn't think it would be that close.

"We talked the possibility of a letdown, but these guys are pros. Still, there's a tendency to say these guys aren't the star players, but we knew they would come out and play well," he said.

Fred Jones scored a career-high 31 points and rookie David Harrison added 19, also his best with the Pacers.

With Fred and James Jones both playing with five fouls, there were thoughts of the Pacers possibly playing with just four players, like the famous scene from the movie "Hoosiers."

Grant Hill Continues His Stellar Comeback

Nov 18, 2004 5:15 PM

Grant Hill scored 32 points, his most in 4? years, and Steve Francis had 33 points and 11 assists, both season highs, to lead the Orlando Magic over the Utah Jazz 107-92 on Wednesday night.

Ankle injuries sidelined Hill after he signed with Orlando before the 2000-01 season, limiting him to 47 games in four years. All signs indicate that he is back at full strength.

"I feel like I'm continuing to get better every day at practice and every game, and just really kind of showing my teammates what I can do," said Hill, who has declared this comeback his last. "And doing it, hopefully, day in and day out."

Hill put together a vintage performance against the Jazz, resembling his former self, playing a season-high 41 minutes, Hill added five rebounds and five assists.

"He was just tremendous," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "He's always been a great player -- knows how to play and doesn't overdo anything. To see him healthy, I'm happy for him."

Small Swap Between Magic and Bobcats

Nov 1, 2004 1:05 PM

In a small deal made today the Charlotte Bobcats have trade Brandon Hunter to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Keith Bogans.

Brandon Hunter was an expansion pick of the Bobcats.  He was selected from the Boston Celtics.  Hunter averaged 3.5 points, 3.3 rebounds in just over eleven minutes of work.

"With this move we were able to add another 'big' to our depth," Magic general manager John Weisbrod said. "Brandon is a fierce rebounder, particularly on the offensive end, and a tough physical player."

Last season Keith Bogans played in 73 games and averaged averaged 6.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists with the Orlando Magic.  The Bobcats should have plenty of minutes to give Bogans this year, something the Orlando Magic could not offer after the Houston/Orlando Trade.
