McGrady won't sign extension this summer.

Feb 25, 2004 10:02 AM

Tracy McGrady has no plans to sign a contract extension this summer and has every intention of opting out of the final two years of his contract in the summer of 2005.

McGrady could even see himself leaving if things don't go well next season.

"I've got to wait and see what happens this summer and next season before I do anything," McGrady told Florida Today. "I don't necessarily want to be a free agent, but I've got to wait and see what changes are going to come around here. I just can't go through this again -- all this losing."

However, Magic general manager John Gabriel believes the team will upgrade it's roster enough this offseason with a high first-round pick and their projected $5.1 Mid-Level Exception to convince McGrady to stay.

Jordan wanted to buy Magic

Feb 23, 2004 10:17 AM

Magic owner Rich DeVos says that Michael Jordan tried to buy the team last year.

"Yes, we heard from Michael indirectly," DeVos told me Friday night during halftime of the Magic-Nuggets game. "He was very interested, but Michael didn't want to put his own money into it. He never does."

Jordan wasn't the only one interested in buying the team.

Magic President Bob Vander Weide said on Sunday that current Charlotte Bobcats owner Bob Johnson inquired about buying the team in 2002.

However, DeVos maintains that the team is not for sale.

DeVos claims the team is not for sale.

Magic guard McGrady, Wizards coach Jordan fined

Feb 22, 2004 4:06 PM

NEW YORK (AP) Orlando Magic guard Tracy McGrady and Washington Wizards coach Eddie Jordan were fined by the NBA on Sunday.

McGrady was fined $10,000 for kicking a basketball into the stands twice at the end of the first half of Orlando's 102-98 victory over Denver on Friday night.

McGrady kicked the ball into the stands, and when it was returned to the court, he kicked it into the stands again. He received two technicals and was ejected.

Jordan was fined $7,500 for failing to leave the court in a timely manner at the end of the Washington's 96-87 loss to Indiana on Friday.

Jordan, upset about a no-call when Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas' fadeaway shot over Jeff Foster was disrupted by contact in the final two minutes, berated official Leon Wood in the middle of the court after the final whistle before security intervened.

McGrady will likely face a fine, no suspension

Feb 22, 2004 1:16 PM

Magic guard Tracy McGrady is likely to only be fined and not suspended for twice kicking a basketball into the stands during Friday night's win 102-98 win over the Denver Nuggets.

"I tried to boot that thing up out of the arena, especially the second time when I got it back," joked McGrady, who is expected to find out the amount of the fine prior to tonight's game. "I just thought it was so funny what was going on out there with the bad calling. That (second kick) was just the frustration of the season and I let it all out."

Magic general manager spoke with NBA Vice President of Operations Stu Jackson on Saturday and was told that McGrady would likely only be fined but that the matter was still under review.

"I think that's all there is going to be," Gabriel said referring to a fine. "(Stu Jackson) said there isn't a precedent to suspend on something like that. He wouldn't rule (a suspension) out, but he didn't think there would be one.

McGrady is expected to be fined between $7,500 and $15,000.

Man arrested after allegedly attacking NBA mascot

Feb 21, 2004 8:10 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) A man who attacked the Orlando Magic's mascot was charged Saturday with battery, disorderly intoxication and resisting an officer without violence.

William Jeffrey Hawkins, 39, put Stuff the Magic Dragon in a chokehold Friday night in the waning moments of the Magic's 102-98 win over the Denver Nuggets.

Police were alerted, and it took three stun gun shots to get the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Hawkins under control to the point where he could be removed from his seat and dragged to the concourse, Orlando police Lt. John O'Grady said.

Orange County Jail records show Hawkins was booked early Saturday. His bail was set at $500, and he remained jailed.

``Stuff was nearly snuffed,'' O'Grady said.

O'Grady said Hawkins told authorities he could not remember what happened.

``He appeared to be pretty much intoxicated. He told us he had quite a few beers,'' O'Grady said.

Hawkins' home phone number is not listed, and a woman who answered at his business said she didn't know about what happened and could not comment.

``It's in the hands of the proper authorities,'' Magic spokesman Joel Glass said Saturday.

Orlando's McGrady ejected after twice punting ball

Feb 20, 2004 9:50 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Orlando Magic guard Tracy McGrady was ejected from Friday night's game against the Denver Nuggets after twice kicking the basketball into the stands.

McGrady was upset that there was no goaltending call on his layup attempt in the waning seconds of the first half.

After McGrady stripped Carmelo Anthony of the ball, he drove the length of the court. His layup try, which would've brought the Magic within 58-57 entering the break, was swatted away by Denver's Chris Andersen.

The NBA's scoring leader ended his drive in a pileup under the basket, a look of disbelief on his face. McGrady then took the ball and punted it deep into the arena's lower bowl.

When a fan tossed the ball back on the court, McGrady grabbed it and again kicked it into the stands.

Two technical fouls were assessed, and McGrady's night was over after 15 points in 20 minutes. His ejection ended his streaks of 40-point games (two) and 20-point games (21).

Earlier in the quarter, McGrady reached the 10,000-point milestone. At 24 years, 272 days old, he's the second-youngest player to surpass that mark. Kobe Bryant was 24 years, 193 days old when he did so.

This is the second strange ejection during a Nuggets-Magic game in Orlando in as many years.

On March 15, 2002, Denver's Tim Hardaway tossed a small television set on the court following his ejection for arguing with the officials.

Orlando Magic send Giricek to Utah Jazz for Stevenson

Feb 19, 2004 7:20 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) The Orlando Magic sent Gordan Giricek to the Utah Jazz for DeShawn Stevenson just before the NBA trading deadline Thursday in a swap of shooting guards.

Stevenson averaged 11.4 points in 54 games for the Jazz, finally showing a glimmer of the promise that prompted Utah to draft him out of high school in 2000.

``DeShawn is young, athletic and a fierce competitor,'' Orlando general manager John Gabriel said in a statement. ``He has grown nicely under the leadership of Jerry Sloan and the Jazz organization, and we look forward to him taking the next step with us.''

Giricek averaged a career-low 10.2 points in 48 games with Orlando. This is the second time in as many seasons he has been traded at the deadline.

Stevenson is having the most successful season of his four-year career. He has always been able to drive to the basket, but this season he has become more of a threat from the outside. His shooting percentage of .445 is a career high.

Utah selected Stevenson 23rd overall from Washington Union (Calif.) High School, hoping he would be the next player to make a quick leap from prep to pro success. The development was slow. After averaging 4.9 points his second season, Utah signed Stevenson to a one-year contract option and tried starting him at shooting guard early in 2002-03.

Stevenson held the job for eight games before returning to the bench. He grew frustrated as a reserve and let Sloan know it in a heated argument during practice that got him sent back to Utah during the opening round of the playoffs.

Stevenson apologized and was quickly reinstated from a one-game suspension.

Giricek is in just his second NBA season, having played for years in Europe.

He came to Orlando with Drew Gooden from Memphis in a deal for Mike Miller and Ryan Humphrey in 2003. They put a charge into a mediocre team, and Orlando won 13 of 18 games down the stretch to make the playoffs. Giricek averaged 14.3 points and 4.8 rebounds in 27 games.

This season, however, Giricek fell out of favor with new coach Johnny Davis, and Giricek lost his starting job in early January to rookie Keith Bogans.

Giricek had improved his defense in the past days to Davis' satisfaction, and was seeing more time off the bench. In his last eight games in Orlando, he averaged 12.5 points on 48 percent shooting.

Giricek gives the Jazz four European players and two from U.S. territories. The Jazz's ``international'' roster is Giricek (Croatia), Carlos Arroyo (Puerto Rico) and Raul Lopez (Spain), All-Star forward Andrei Kirilenko (Russia), rookie Sasha Pavlovic (Serbia-Montenegro) and guard Raja Bell (U.S. Virgin Islands).

Hornets trade Rooks to Orlando for Williams

Feb 19, 2004 7:19 PM

NEW ORLEANS (AP) The New Orleans Hornets acquired guard Shammond Williams from the Orlando Magic on Thursday in exchange for center Sean Rooks in a deal completed just before the NBA trading deadline..

Rooks, on the injured list since Feb. 10 with a sprained right ankle, has averaged 2.3 points a game in 35 appearances. He had been playing little for New Orleans because of the improved play of Robert Traylor and the emergence of rookie David West.

Williams has played in 37 games this season, averaging 4.9 points and two assists per game.

Earlier, the Magic sent Gordan Giricek to the Utah Jazz for DeShawn Stevenson in a trade of guards.
