Heat Unlikely To Extend Bam Adebayo To Preserve 2021 Cap Space

Jul 27, 2020 4:51 PM

Bam Adebayo is eligible for a contract extension this offseason as part of the 2017 draft class, but that is highly unlikely to happen due to the plans of the Miami Heat to preserve cap space for 2021. The Heat have interest in pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo and Victor Oladipo during the 2021 offseason.

"He's not going to get a max contract in the offseason," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "Even though I think he should, because the Heat are going to save money for the 2021 summer. That's a storyline that I can almost guarantee for you: Bam Adebayo will not sign a contract extension this offseason.

"It will be, 'Bam, we'll take care of you later.'"

Adebayo's cap hold in 2021 will almost certainly be less than what he would receive as part of an extension. Adebayo would become a restricted free agent, which would allow the Heat to match any offer he receives.

Bam Adebayo, Kendrick Nunn Return To Heat Practice After Testing Positive For COVID-19

Jul 25, 2020 1:12 AM

Bam Adebayo and Kendrick Nunn returned to Miami Heat practice after completing their quarantine following positive COVID-19 tests.

Adebayo said he was mostly asymptomatic, though Nunn reported symptoms similar to the common cold.

Erik Spoelstra said they could both play in the Heat's scrimmage on Saturday, and may be ready in time for regular season games.

"They feel like they've been out long enough. So they basically ignored me and jumped on the court whenever they could. But it was great to have everybody out there -- and practice, you can imagine the level of spirit that the guys brought. After 10 practices, this being our 11th, it was just a perfect time for that kind of infusion of energy and spirit from those two guys," said Spoelstra.

Jimmy Butler's Request For Blank Nameplate On Jersey Denied

Jul 19, 2020 9:51 PM

Jimmy Butler's request to have a blank nameplate on the back of his jersey has been denied by the league.

Players will have to wear a name as part of the agreement between the NBA and NBPA on jersey messaging.

Butler hoped to wear a blank nameplate to underscore the idea that he would be "no different than anybody else of color" if he were not in the NBA.

Jimmy Butler Hopes To Wear Blank Nameplate As Social Justice Message

Jul 14, 2020 10:09 PM

Jimmy Butler would like to keep the nameplate on the back of his jersey blank to underscore that he would be "no different than anybody else of color" if he weren't an NBA player.

Butler said he hopes the NBA will allow him to wear no message at all.

"I have decided not to," Butler said during a Tuesday video call with reporters. "With that being said, I hope that my last name doesn't go on there as well. Just because I love and respect all the messages that the league did choose, but for me, I felt like with no message, with no name, it's going back to, like, who I was. And if I wasn't who I was today, I'm no different than anybody else of color and want that to be my message in the sense that just because I'm an NBA player, everybody has the same right, no matter what, and that's how I feel about my people of color."

The NBA has yet to sign off on his request.

"Not just yet," he said. "Not just yet. I'm hoping I get that opportunity, though. I really am."
