Ty Lue In 'Strong Position' To Become Next Head Coach Of Clippers

Sep 30, 2020 9:28 PM

Ty Lue is in a strong position to become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers but the franchise will conduct a full search, a source told Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Lue was an assistant coach with the Clippers this past season and has many of the qualifications the team is seeking with his championship, multiple Finals appearances and understanding the pressure of coaching superstars.

Lue has also interviewed with the Philadelphia 76ers and is expected to also meet with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Cleveland Cavaliers parted ways with Lue at the beginning of the 18-19 season.

Steve Ballmer Spoke With Kawhi Leonard, Paul George Before Decision On Doc Rivers

Sep 29, 2020 1:14 PM

Steve Ballmer called several key players on the Los Angeles Clippers to get their opinions before parting ways with Doc Rivers as head coach.

Ballmer called both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George and sources say nothing the players told him changed his mind about moving on from Rivers. The Clippers acquired Leonard and George during the 2019 offseason in a bold series of moves that sent significant assets and future draft capital to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Leonard and George can become free agents in 2021.

The decision was ultimately Ballmer's, per ESPN.

Rivers, for his part, didn't feel comfortable continuing as coach without the full support of Ballmer.

Clippers Don't Have Clear-Cut Favorite To Replace Doc Rivers

Sep 29, 2020 11:03 AM

The Los Angeles Clippers have no clear-cut No. 1 candidate to replace Doc Rivers and sources tell Jovan Buha of The Athletic that the decision to part ways with Doc Rivers was not made with another coach "waiting in the wings to be hired."

Rivers was already head coach when Steve Ballmer purchased the team in 2014.

The Clippers don't have a stylistic mandate for their coach, but would like him to be a high-level game strategist.

Ty Lue and Jeff Van Gundy are among the candidates for the job, though they'll also consider candidates without prior head coaching experience in hopes of finding their own version of Lue, Steve Kerr or Nick Nurse who each won a title in their first season as head coach.

Clippers, Doc Rivers Part Ways

Sep 28, 2020 5:34 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers have parted ways with Doc Rivers as head coach.

Rivers joined the Clippers during the 2013 offseason. During the subsequent offseason after Steve Ballmer took over as owner, Rivers assumed final say in all basketball matters and signed a new five-year deal.

In 2017, Rivers relinquished his duties as president of basketball operations.

The Clippers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets after blowing a 3-1 lead. The Clippers had clear title aspirations after acquiring Kawhi Leonard and Paul George last offseason.

Rivers released the following statement on Twitter:

"Thank you Clipper nation for allowing me to be your coach and for all your support in helping making this a winning franchise. When I took this job, my goals were to make this a winning basketball program, a free agent destination, and bring a championship to this organization. While I was able to accomplish most of my goals, I won't be able to see them all through. Thought it was a disappointing ending to our season, you are right there and I know what this team is capable of accomplishing with your support. Thank you to all the players, coaches, and staff for helping us get here. Most importantly, thank you to the fans. We went through a lot, and I am grateful for my time here."
