Pacers Already Have Free Agent Targets Identified With $36M Of Cap Space

Feb 26, 2011 3:33 PM

The Pacers very nearly pulled off a bold trade for O.J. Mayo at the deadline, but Larry Bird is optimistic $36 million in cap space this summer will result in an improved roster.

"You don't spend it all, but obviously we're going after some players. We've got them targeted. It's going to be a good summer for us," Bird said.

"We don't know the rules of the collective bargaining yet, but we feel we're in a good position. I like our core group. We're going to lose some because their contracts are up."

Mayo Has No Hard Feelings, Glad Indy Trade Fell Through

Feb 26, 2011 10:17 AM

O.J. Mayo insists he isn't bitter after the Grizzlies nearly dealt him to the Pacers prior to Thursday's NBA trade deadline.

"We're still married and I'm happy to be here," Mayo said. "I think I belong here. It's my job to prove that I need to be here."

Memphis had agreed to send Mayo to Indiana for Josh McRoberts and a first-round pick, but New Orleans pulled out of the deal at the last minute. They were to take Indiana's Brandon Rush in the deal.

"I'm happy that it's all over. At least I know I'll be here all the way through the end of the season," Mayo said. "You can't control what goes on in this business other than going out there and giving 120 percent. That's what you can control."

Jazz Beat Pacers, Give Corbin First Win

Feb 26, 2011 9:59 AM

The Jazz defeated the Pacers 95-84 on Friday night, giving coach Tyrone Corbin his first victory.

Utah ended a five-game losing streak and earned their first win since Jerry Sloan stepped down earlier this month.

"It seemed like a weight was lifted off our shoulders, getting the first win, and especially getting one for Ty," Paul Millsap said. "Tonight was for Ty to get his first win.

The game also marked the debuts of Devin Harris and Derrick Favors, who were acquired from New Jersey in the Deron Williams trade.

"It feels great," Corbin said. "The guys did a great job. They made a great effort. They stayed in the game the entire 48 minutes tonight. You can't ask for anything more from them."

The Pacers, Hornets and Grizzlies were very close to finishing a three-team trade involving O.J. Mayo, Brandon Rush and Josh McRoberts with the call logged at 3:01 PM EST, but the Hornets reportedly pulled out.

The Hornets are currently owned by the NBA.

Memphis would have received McRoberts and a first round pick from Indiana.

New Orleans was going to acquire Rush.

A source confirmed to RealGM's Andrew Perna that timing wasn't the issue with the deal, but rather an agreement couldn't be reached.
