Trae Young Says He'll Be Better Than Luka Doncic In 5-10 Years

Jan 29, 2019 12:44 AM

Trae Young stated he was going to be a better player than Luka Doncic in the future.

The two were part of a draft day trade involving the Mavs and Hawks.

"In my eyes, it's not a question -- it's going to be me. But that's just the competitive nature in my blood, and I think that's the no-brainer with me," when asked whether he or Doncic would be better in 5-10 years.

Young added that the trade worked out for both teams.

"Luka's having a really good year so far. And for me, all I do is try to focus on myself and my team. I know it's easy to say, but I'm really dedicated to working extremely hard every day for my teammates and things like that. And I think at the end of the day it worked out for both teams. That's how I look at it. I mean, Luka's doing really well. I feel like I'm doing really well as well," added Young.

Luka Doncic Becomes First Teenager With 30-Point Triple-Double

Jan 28, 2019 2:30 PM

Luka Doncic had 35 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in the Dallas Mavericks' 123-120 loss to the Toronto Raptors.

He is the first teenager, and the youngest player in league history, to notch a 30-point triple-double. The previous record-holder was LeBron James, who achieved the feat at 20 years and 100 days old.

Doncic is averaging 20.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists on the season.

Nick Nurse said the Raptors had difficulty knocking Doncic off his rhythm.

"We couldn't get him out of rhythm because he was low and strong and crossing over. Then with a burst, he was into the paint. And when we did get enough help there, he'd hang in the air until the last second and throw that incredible, two-handed pass out to the right corner. He's something else."

Dennis Smith Jr. To Compete In Dunk Contest

Jan 26, 2019 6:02 PM

Dennis Smith Jr. has decided to compete in this year's dunk contest after finishing runner-up in last year's event.

Smith said in September that he had no interest doing the event after receiving a low score for his first dunk and felt that props and gimmicks had taken over the contest. Smith didn't use any props for his dunks last year.

"The gimmicks and everything that go with it, I'm not with it," said Smith.

He added that a discussion with his grandmother changed his mind.

Rick Carlisle On Dennis Smith Jr. Return: 'Everything We Needed'

Jan 23, 2019 2:14 AM

Rick Carlisle praised Dennis Smith Jr.'s return to the Dallas Mavericks lineup after their 106-98 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. Smith, who missed the previous 6 games due to what Carlisle described as "business stuff", finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The win snapped the Mavs' 4-game losing streak.

"I thought it was great, just really tremendous. Everything we needed -- speed, attacking, shot-making, a couple of amazing assists," said Carlisle of Smith's performance.

Smith added that he and Luka Doncic play well together despite the stats.

"I feel like we do pretty well on the court together. Stats and everything will tell something else, but there's so many things that go into all those analytics that people like to look into. That's why I don't bother with that. I feel like me and him, we respect one another on and off the court. It's a mutual respect for each other's game as well, so I don't feel like it's ever been an issue. I feel like it's looked way too much into."

Rick Carlisle: Dennis Smith Jr. Will Rejoin Mavs On Tuesday

Jan 21, 2019 2:20 AM

Rick Carlisle stated that Dennis Smith Jr. will rejoin the Dallas Mavericks for their home game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I am excited to announce Dennis Smith Jr. will rejoin the team on Tuesday. Dennis and I spoke at length today. He is feeling better and plans to resume workouts in preparation for his return," said Carlisle.

Smith sat out the previous five games due to a combination of back soreness and an illness, although Carlisle admitted that there were "business" reasons why Smith was kept away from the team.

"This is just my feeling, is that he's being told to stay away for whatever reason. I just don't want people out there to think he is snubbing the Mavs or anything like that. This is just my opinion, I believe there's business stuff going on, and he's being told to stay away," added Carlisle.

Smith will sit out the Mavs game against the Bucks on Monday before making his return.

Rick Carlisle Tries To Reach Out To Dennis Smith Jr.

Jan 18, 2019 2:53 PM

Rick Carlisle tried to reach out to Dennis Smith Jr. expressing how he would "love to have him back."

Smith recently expressed that he hopes to be traded. Smith has been frustrated with his role with the Dallas Mavericks.

"Dennis Smith is not here, but I want to let everybody know I reached out to him and his agent last night and let them know that when he's feeling better, he's welcome to rejoin the team at any time," Carlisle said Friday. "We would love to have him back.

"In his year and a half here, he has started every game that he has been available to play. And during that period in time, he has experienced significant growth on both sides of the ball. I'm very proud of the progress that he's made. That's where we are."

Smith is not expected to rejoin the Mavericks on their road trip.

Added Carlisle: "I just think that he's part of this team and we'd love to have him back."

The Mavericks won't trade Smith unless they get a good value in return.
