Bulls Think Salmons Offers More Versatility Than Gordon

Sep 28, 2009 5:01 PM

Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro is going to miss Ben Gordon, but he's content with John Salmons.

"[Salmons] gives you a little more versatility," Del Negro told the Chicago Tribune. "We'll have to wait and see how all that pans out, but you like that length.

"One of the areas we struggled was defensive rebounding, so with more size at the two [shooting guard] and with Luol (Deng) back healthy and then with a couple of rookies that have some length ... it gives us some more options and versatility."

Opposing two-guards won't be able to post up against Chicago often anymore, as Salmons provides a bigger obstacle.

"The only difference is really on defense," Salmons said of moving from small forward to shooting guard. "Guarding the two and the three, sometimes, is going against two totally different players. Threes are more post-up wings, one-on-one players. A lot of twos run off screens for the most part.

"Like when we play Boston, the three is Paul Pierce, a one-on-one player, and the two is Ray Allen, who runs off screens. It's a big difference defensively."

Deng Anxious To See How Leg Reacts

Sep 27, 2009 10:16 AM

Bulls forward Luol Deng is excited to get back on the court, and anxious to see how his mended right tibia feels once he does.

"I could say whatever I want to say, but until I'm on the floor I really don't know," Deng told the Chicago Tribune. "I'm going to go by how it feels. I'm going to try to do my best to do two practices a day. I think I'll be able to. I feel great. But if I feel anything early, I will try to monitor it."

Deng has been sidelined since Feb. 28 because of a stress fracture in his right tibia.

"One thing I do is I work very hard," he said. "I really don't take shortcuts. I felt like the past two years I had unfortunate injuries. There's nothing I could do about that. But I really worked hard this summer."

Bulls general manager Gar Forman told the press that the forward practically lived in the gym this offseason.

"Luol basically lived in this gym, almost to the point at times we felt we had to kick him out," Forman said. "I remember early in the summer, we were preparing for the draft. He had worked out in the morning in the weight room. Then he had a workout in the afternoon on the floor, doing some skill work. I go down to our kitchen about 6 p.m. and he's down there eating dinner.

"I said, 'Luol, what are you doing here?' He had put himself on a plan where rather than go home, he was bringing his dinner to the Berto Center, heating it up in our kitchen and then would get in another workout in the evening."

Jerome James Hopes To Make Comeback

Sep 26, 2009 4:11 PM

Jerome James has appeared in just four games over the last two seasons, but is hoping to make an impact in Chicago this year.

"I'm about 65 percent," James told the Daily Herald. "This (injury), every time I try to speed it up, it slows me down. So I'm sticking to the program the Bulls gave me and hopefully here in a month or two, I'll be ready to play."

The center has been slowed by a torn Achilles tendon. Many expected him to retire, but he wants to complete a comeback to defend his own reputation.

"My kids, they're starting to read stuff on the Internet that just isn't true about me," he added. "A lot of people out there don't know me or have no idea who I am, what I'm about, what I stand for. So I decided, if I'm going to go out, I'm going to go out on top. Get back right, get back healthy and play basketball again."

$100K Offered For Jordan-Russell Charity Duel

Sep 23, 2009 7:19 AM

The owner of the Utah Jazz's NBDL team wants to see Michael Jordan play Bryon Russell one-on-one.

Brandt Andersen is offering a $100,000 donation to the charity of the winner's choice if he can get the pair to take part in a game of 21.

During Jordan's recent Hall of Fame speech, he said he was motivated by Russell's trash talk during his first retirement.

Jordan famously hit a championship-clinching jumper over Russell in the 1998 NBA Finals, during which many Jazz fans contend that he pushed off.

Bryon Russell Challenges Jordan To Pickup Game

Sep 13, 2009 9:12 AM

Bryon Russell has challenged Michael Jordan to a pickup game in California.

"I'll play his ass right now," Russell told Yahoo! Sports. "This is a call-out for him to come play me. He can come out here in his private jet and come play. He's got millions of dollars. He can pay for the jet. He can meet me at the Recreation Center in Calabasas.

"We can have Mark Jackson do the commentating. We can have Mitch Richmond do the officiating. We can put it on TV and see if Michael's still got it."

Jordan mentioned Russell in his Hall of Fame acceptance speech on Friday. The players had a moderate feud during their playing days.

After recalling a few incidents during his speech, Jordan said: "From this day forward, if I ever see him in shorts, I'm coming at him."

Exec: Jordan Was Himself During HOF Speech

Sep 12, 2009 6:13 PM

There were mixed feelings after Michael Jordan's acceptance speech at the Naismith Hall of Fame on Friday.

Some, including Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, felt as though Jordan's speech was "petty."

Jordan took shots at former Bulls general manager Jerry Krause, ignored long-time trainer Tim Glover and admonished Jeff Van Gundy and Byron Russell for their insignificance.

Even when touching on his family, Jordan said: "I wouldn't want to be you guys."

A high-ranking team executive believes that Jordan is the only one who could get away with a speech like the one he made.

"That's who Michael is," the executive told Yahoo! Sports. "It wasn't like he was out of character. There's no one else who could've gotten away with what he did tonight. But it was Michael, and everyone just goes along."

Added a Hall of Famer after the festivities: "M.J. was introduced as the greatest player ever and he's still standing there trying to settle scores."

Wade Won't Say If Bulls Are On His Radar

Sep 12, 2009 10:23 AM

Dwyane Wade was asked on Friday if the Bulls would be his top destination in the event he left the Heat in free agency.

"If I disclose that kind of information, the articles this season aren't as exciting anymore," Wade told the Daily Herald. "Speculation is not the same. You guys ain't going to have nothing to talk about me."

Wade was then asked what would keep him in Miami.

"Well, first of all I love the organization," he added.

"I love what it stands for, from the owner Mickey Arison on down. It's a first class organization. We've had some good times in Miami. I love the weather. It's become home for me for the past six years. Hey, it's not my fault Miami drafted me at No. 5 (in 2003) and Chicago did not move up (from No. 7)."
