Van Gundy, Izzo Could Be Candidates For Nets

Mar 30, 2010 4:11 PM

Jeff Van Gundy could be a potential candidate to coach the Nets, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Van Gundy hadn't planned to return to coaching next season, but the Nets believe he'll be willing to listen to a pitch and their chances of landing a top flight coach are improved with president Rod Thorn staying.

Michigan State's Tom Izzo is considered a sleeper for the gig.

He was believed to have interest in the Chicago coaching job a few years ago, but luring Izzo from college might be difficult.

Nets Beat Pistons, Avoid Historic Mark

Mar 27, 2010 7:29 AM

The Nets defeated the Pistons 118-110 on Friday night, giving them nine wins for the season.

New Jersey, 9-63, is no longer in danger of being the worst team in NBA history. Even if they lose their remaining 10 games, they'll be tied with the 76ers (1972-73) for the worst mark in league history (9-73).

The win over Detroit also marked the first time this season that the Nets have won consecutive games.

"We're smiling," said point guard Devin Harris. "It's good to get two wins in a row, but we're not satisfied. We want to continue to be better and finish the season on a high note."

Nets CEO To Implement Paper Bag Promotion

Mar 26, 2010 6:10 AM

Nets chief executive Brett Yormark is trying to turn a negative into a positive.

After having a heated exchange with a fan wearing a paper bag on his head to protest the team's horrid season earlier this week, Yormark is starting a new marketing campaign.

Any fan who puts a paper bag on his head would be offered a nylon Nets' bag containing a poster, a pack of player trading cards and a printed note from Yormark that says:

"Thanks for letting us see your face. We hope to see it more often at Nets' games."

The Nets had at least two fans accept the exchange during Wednesday's home game against the Kings.

Kuester Believes Nets Better Than Record

Mar 25, 2010 5:32 PM

Detroit head coach John Kuester believes the Nets are much better than their record indicates.

"I've watched a number of their games and they've played extremely well; it's like most teams bring their 'A' games against them," Kuester said. "It's never as bad as it seems or as good as it seems. Every team has issues. They played hard against us the first three games (all Pistons victories) and we've had to play well (to beat them)."

Lopez: Nets Aren't Trying To Win Just 10 Games

Mar 21, 2010 7:45 AM

Nets center Brook Lopez says that the team isn't simply trying to reach the 10-win mark, which would allow them to avoid posting the worst record in NBA history.

The 76ers went 9-73 during the 1972-73 season.

"People keep asking: "Are you just trying to get to 10 wins? Is that your focus?" It'll be nice [to get there], obviously," Lopez told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

"Hopefully that'll be soon, and hopefully there'll be a few more after that. We're trying to win as many as possible. We're not trying to just get to 10 and stop."

New Jersey is 7-62 through Saturday's action. They are on pace for just eight victories.

Nine of their 13 remaining games are against teams that are in the playoff hunt.

Harris Not Optimistic He'll Remain With Nets If They Win Lottery

Mar 20, 2010 1:21 PM

The Nets will likely trade Devin Harris if they win the lottery and select John Wall.

?That?s still a few months down the line, but it?s possible that there?s going to be a change for me, sure,? Harris said.

Harris was asked about people believing he was a combo guard.

?Coming in, I heard that a lot. But I?d like to think I can do both, depending on what the team needs,? Harris said. ?And I?m fine with that ? as long as we?re winning. I know I can be a true point guard if need be, but I know I also have a gift for scoring the basketball as well.

?I mean, my first couple years in the league I was just a setup guy ? I?d pass and stand in the corner. And I knew I could score, but it wasn?t needed. It?s more needed now in New Jersey.?

Harris was also asked about what he thinks of Wall's game.

?He?s talented. Athletic. The sky?s the limit for him,? Harris said. ?But he?s still young and raw, in a sense.

?Remember, the big eye-opener (for rookie point guards) is the level of talent they face every night. You get Chris Paul one night, then Deron Williams, Steve Nash ? every night you?re going to face the other team?s best player.

?I like him as a player. He?s done a great job ? he had a couple guys before him who demanded the ball, and he learned how to handle that. But there will be a higher demand on this level, when you play with a Brook Lopez or any No. 1 option, so that?s the other adjustment he?ll have to deal with.?

Harris was finally asked if the lottery will determine if he wants to stay in New Jersey.

?That?s out of my hands,? he said. ?I might have a different feeling about it then, but after the lottery, we?ll all know what could happen.

?That?s when the questions will start. That?s okay, I know I?m going to start hearing about this from now until May. It doesn?t bother me. I might as well get ready for it.?
