Nets Sold Kyle Korver To Cover 2003 Summer League, Purchase Copy Machine

Jul 29, 2014 10:40 AM

The then-New Jersey Nets picked Kyle Korver with the 51st overall selection in the 2003 NBA Draft and sold his draft rights to the Philadelphia 76ers for $125,000.

The cash covered the Nets' Summer League bill and they spent the leftover money on a new copy machine.

Korver developed into one of the NBA's most valued swingmen.

“We gave away a good player for summer league,” says Rod Thorn, the Nets GM at the time. “It was just one of those things we had to do. At least, that’s how I rationalized it.”

“The game over the last four or five years has become so much more suited to the way he plays today,” says Jerry Sloan, who coached Korver in Utah.

Multiple current GMs say passing on Korver in the draft ranks as one of the worst mistakes of their respective careers.

Kent Bazemore, Hawks Reach Two-Year, $4M Guaranteed Deal

Jul 11, 2014 10:41 PM

Kent Bazemore has reached agreement on a $4 million contract with the Atlanta Hawks, fully guaranteed over two seasons, a league source told RealGM.

Bazemore had fielded interest from several team and held meetings this week, and he traveled to Atlanta for a visit to the Hawks. The Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets made late pushes for Bazemore, a source said.

An athletic, 6-foot-5 combo guard, Bazemore had been part of the Golden State Warriors’ developing core of players before his trade to the Los Angeles Lakers last season. In 23 games and 15 starts for the Lakers, Bazemore averaged 13.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists.

Out of Old Dominion, Bazemore, 25, has played three NBA seasons. The Hawks have replenished their backcourt with lengthy guards in Bazemore and Thabo Sefolosha.

ESPN first reported Bazemore's deal with the Hawks.

Thabo Sefolosha Agrees To Three-Year, $12M Deal With Hawks

Jul 3, 2014 5:11 PM

Free agent guard Thabo Sefolosha has reached agreement on a three-year, $12 million contract with the Atlanta Hawks, league sources told RealGM.

The deal will be fully guaranteed – with no team or player options. Sefolosha can formally sign on July 10 after the NBA's free-agent moratorium.

Sefolosha, 30, had a run of five-plus seasons as the starting shooting guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, and he helped established a defensive identity along with Kendrick Perkins within a young roster. Sefolosha averaged 6.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 26 minutes a season ago. He was removed as the starter late in the postseason due to a lack of accuracy on his jump shot.

Several teams made inquiries to Sefolosha inside the first three days of free agency, including interest from the Miami Heat on Wednesday. Sefolosha held meetings in Washington with the front offices of the Toronto Raptors and Washington Wizards over the past two days.

Sefolosha was acquired by the Chicago Bulls with the No. 13 overall pick in 2006, and swiftly made a defensive impact as a primary stopper on the NBA’s top offensive talents. The 6-foot-7 swingman played two seasons with the Bulls before his trade to Oklahoma City in 2009.

Sefolosha has averages of 5.8 points and 3.7 rebounds in his eight-year NBA career.

Kent Bazemore Receives Personal Call From Brad Stevens, Interest Elsewhere

Jul 1, 2014 2:02 AM

Kent Bazemore received a personal phone call from Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens after the start of free agency at midnight, a league source told RealGM.

Bazemore and Stevens have a history and mutual respect: Stevens’ Butler program eliminated Bazemore’s Old Dominion team in the NCAA tournament in 2011.

Bazemore also received free-agent interest from the Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks.

Bazemore had been a developmental focus of the Golden State Warriors, but the franchise traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers last season. Bazemore, 24, averaged 13.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists over 23 games and 15 starts for the Lakers.
