Kyle Lowry Discusses Priorities Ahead Of Free Agency

May 19, 2021 5:04 PM

Kyle Lowry will be a free agent this offseason and his future with the Toronto Raptors is incredibly uncertain after he was nearly traded at the deadline.

“Money talks, and years talk, and all that stuff,” Lowry said Tuesday. “Let’s be real. I play this game for the love of the game, but at the end of the day, I want to make sure my family is still taken care of for generations and the time to come. Even though they are now, I wanna continue to be able to do that for my family, and when I pass away, (their families). And then (I want to) be able to give back to the communities that I support and give back to the things that I love, and to continue to build my brand as an ownership-type person, entrepreneurship-type things.”

The Miami Heat, Dallas Mavericks and New York Knicks are likely the only three teams with the requisite cap space and roster fit to sign Lowry outright.

Lowry believes the Raptors could become title contenders again.

“I think the organization, the team, is still there,” Lowry said. “It still can play at a championship level. It needs to add a couple of pieces here and there, but with the leadership and the coaching staff and the players that the team has, it’s not far off. And there’s only one champion. Every year there’s only one champion. Only one team can get to that level and I think the leadership of the organization and the players, they’re in good hands.”

Masai Ujiri To Give Contract With Raptors 'Some Deep Thought'

May 19, 2021 5:09 PM

Masai Ujiri addressed his contract situation when speaking with the media on Wednesday. Ujiri is without a contract as president of the Toronto Raptors for the 21-22 season.

"Weigh a few of the options and give this thing some deep thought now as I go through this process," said Ujiri.

Ujiri plans to sit down with ownership of the Raptors soon.

One of the areas Ujiri emphasized he plans to discuss is for ownership to advocate more for the Raptors given their unique position as the only Canadian team in the NBA.

"Everybody says, 'Blank check, blank check,' but I'm not as much focused on a blank check," Ujiri said during a news conference when asked what he will think about in making his decision. "A lot of the things that we've done here, we have to move forward as a franchise to compete with the best in the NBA. This is all about winning a championship again.

"Let me tell you something, guys: Everybody has forgotten what happened two years ago. OK, yes, we won. But nobody cares anymore, OK? We want to win another one. That's what you want to do. Yeah, you want to prepare yourself to win another one. Not play in the play-in game, not play in the playoffs, you want to win a championship. Everybody's like, 'Why don't you get into the play-in?' Play-in for what? We want to win a championship here, and we have to put ourselves in position.

"I want to know, 'So what's the next lift? What's the next five years? What's the next 10 years? What are we doing to put ourselves in the conversation with all the great teams and all the winners?' That's what we want to do, and that's the conversation that I'm going to have with [ownership]. And, yes, I'm going to have asks, and I'm going to have a lot of things that I think we need to put forward here to address these things, and I think ownership is open to hear this.

"So in terms of that conversation, that's going to be had."

MLSE Source: Masai Ujiri 95 Percent Likely To Remain With Raptors

May 18, 2021 3:26 PM

Masai Ujiri remains a free agent this offseason after signing Bobby Webster and Nick Nurse to extensions to remain with the Toronto Raptors.

MLSE will do everything possible to keep Ujiri.

“They love him, and they believe in him,” said a source close to the MLSE board. “He’s won them a championship and they believe he’s going to win them some more.”

Ujiri first joined the Raptors in 2013.

“Masai doesn’t share a lot; he’s very private and strategic in his own way,” said the source close to MLSE. “But if you were asking ‘Are they going to sign Masai?’ I would put it at 95 percent yes.”

Ujiri has remained private with his intentions.

“They’re going to try to sign him for as long as they reasonably can, [but] if they have to sign him for less [years] they’ll sign him for less,” said the source close to MLSE. “They don’t have a lot of leverage. They want him. If he wants [a shorter deal], what are they going to say, no?”
