Nick Nurse Says Raptors Had 'Bad Rhythm' In Game 1 Loss

Aug 30, 2020 9:49 PM

Nick Nurse pointed to several reasons, including a lack of rhythm, for the Toronto Raptors' 112-94 loss to the Boston Celtics in game 1.

"We really just weren't very good. We didn't make many shots. We didn't play with great composure. We didn't execute very well. It was a rough one today on a lot of fronts. I think that the actual X's and O's and the tactical part, we'll need to do better. But it wasn't a very good rhythm on the day for us," said Nurse.

Pascal Siakam finished with just 13 points on 5-of-16 shooting, and was called for three fouls in the first quarter.

Nurse said that the team will try to get Siakam involved on offense through a variety of ways in game 2.

"I think we'll always look at trying to get him involved in about all areas as opposed to as a player or a jump-shooter or a handler in the screen-and-roll or center in the screen-and-roll. I think we gotta mix it up and vary it, even some isolations on top, isos on the side. Hopefully get him involved in the transition game a little bit as well," said Nurse.

Siakam echoed Nurse's thoughts that the offense lacked rhythm.

"Obviously it was one of those games, and I didn't play well, and we didn't really have a rhythm offensively. I don't think our defense was bad; we made some mistakes and stuff. But we just try to go back and watch the film, and just try to be better."

Raptors Internally Discuss Strike In Response To Jacob Blake Shooting By Police

Aug 26, 2020 4:56 PM

The Toronto Raptors have discussed the possibility of boycotting games following the continued acts of police brutality against Black people in the United States.

Jacob Blake was shot multiple times in the back by police in Wisconsin on Sunday. Blake has survived but is paralyzed from the waist down.

"I'm pretty sick to my stomach to have to sit up here and talk about this again," said Norm Powell.

Toronto opens up their second round series against the Boston Celtics on Thursday.

"I think it’s been talked about," Powell said about a potential boycott of games. "I think everybody is at the point of sitting up and saying, ‘Black Lives Matter’ and sitting up and having these discussions in Zoom calls. That’s not getting the job done. Taking a knee for the anthem, that’s not getting the job done. It’s starting to get washed out."

"I'm in a different place today, emotionally speaking. It's starting to feel like everything we're doing is just going through the motions, nothing's changing," Fred VanVleet said.

"What are we willing to give up? Do we actually give a f--- about what’s going on?”

Marcus Smart said the Celtics have also discussed boycotting.

"We haven't confirmed anything but it's definitely something in the back of our minds," said Smart.

Kyle Lowry To Undergo MRI On Arch Of Left Foot

Aug 24, 2020 1:20 AM

Kyle Lowry will undergo an MRI on the arch of his left foot after suffering an injury in game 4 of the Toronto Raptors' series-clinching win over the Brooklyn Nets.

Lowry, who was initially ruled out with an ankle sprain, played just nine minutes in the game.

"He's our leader. He's our vocal point when we're out there, on and off the court. It'll take more effort from the guys, knowing they'll get an opportunity to go out and play. Hopefully, with these days off, he'll be able to recover," said Norman Powell of Lowry's injury.

Masai Ujiri: Horrible Treatment From Deputy's Sheriff Was Because I Am Black

Aug 20, 2020 5:05 PM

Masai Ujiri released the following statement following the release of video of his interaction with a deputy sheriff immediately following the Toronto Raptors' championship-cliching Game 6 win at the Golden State Warriors.

"Thank you to everybody who has expressed disappointment and concern regarding the video that was recently released. My family and I are deeply grateful for your care and consideration.

"The video sadly demonstrates how horribly I was treated by a law enforcement officer last year in the midst of my team, the Toronto Raptors, winning its first world championship. It was an exhilarating moment of achievement for our organization, for our players, for our city, for our country, and for me personally, given my long-tenured professional journey in the NBA. Yet, unfortunately, I was reminded in that moment that despite all of my hard work and success, there are some people, including those who are supposed to protect us, who will always and only see me as something that is unworthy of respectful engagement. And, there’s only one indisputable reason why that is the case - because I am Black.

"What saddens me most about this ordeal is that the only reason why I am getting the justice I deserve in this moment is because of my success. Because I’m the President of a NBA team, I had access to resources that ensured I could demand and fight for my justice. So many of my brothers and sisters haven’t had, don’t have, and won’t have the same access to resources that assured my justice. And that’s why Black Lives Matter.

"And that’s why it’s important for all of us to keep demanding justice. Justice for George. Justice for Breonna. Justice for Elijah. Justice for far too many Black lives that mattered. And justice for Black people around the world, who need our voice and our compassion to save their lives.

"Those are the ties that bind us.

"With love and determination,

"Masai Ujiri"
