Kings Will Retain Luke Walton As Head Coach Next Season

May 17, 2021 7:52 PM

The Sacramento Kings will retain Luke Walton as head coach next season.

The Kings missed out on the playoffs again in Walton's second season with the team. Walton, however, maintains the support of Sacramento's key players.

Previous reports indicated the nature of Walton's contract could make firing Walton financially difficult for the franchise.

Luke Walton Not Concerned About Job Security With Kings

May 17, 2021 1:19 PM

Luke Walton is entering the offseason comfortable with his job security as head coach of the Sacramento Kings. Walton finished his second season with the Kings without a playoff berth, putting him at 0-for-4 in the category dating back to his days with the Los Angeles Lakers.

“It doesn’t weigh on me because it’s the same thing I always talk about — it’s control what you can control — the same message I give my players every day,” Walton said. “To me, the storyline and the focus of Sacramento right now should be on this team and the excitement of what we saw out of our young rookie in Tyrese and the progress that De’Aaron Fox made and the year Richaun Holmes and Harrison Barnes had, and even Buddy [Hield] — watching Buddy continue to grow and start having games with seven or eight assists and low turnovers.

“That’s what we should be talking about as a group and as an organization. So if you ask me, I’ll tell you, no, I’m not concerned at all because it doesn’t do anything for me or the group to be concerned, so we’ll stay focused on the positive and the good things. Like I continue to say, I’m excited about this group and excited about our future.”

The Kings have a promising future with De'Aaron Fox playing at a near All-Star level and the Rookie of the Year candidacy of Tyrese Haliburton.

“… Look, we’re all frustrated. We want to be part of a postseason. I know the organization does, the fans do, the media does, so that part of it is disappointing, but you’ve got to look at the good, too, and the progress that so many of these guys have made this year.”

The Sacramento Kings acquired Terence Davis at the trade deadline from the Toronto Raptors and he sees his future with the franchise. Davis will be a restricted free agent this offseaon.

"It's definitely looking like that," said Davis. "This is some of the best basketball I’ve played in my career. ... Everyone believes in everyone here. Guys are unselfish here & that’s the way you want to play the game.”

Davis is averaging 10.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 20.5 minutes over 24 games with the Kings.

Davis was a Second Team All-Rookie selection in 2020.

De'Aaron Fox Was 'Hit Like A Truck' By COVID-19

May 11, 2021 10:26 AM

De'Aaron Fox has been quarantined with COVID-19 since April 22nd and has endured headaches, body aches and chills.

Fox is expected to be cleared to basketball activities soon provided he clears the NBA's protocols.

Fox said COVID-19 "hit me like a truck."

While Fox has been out with COVID-19, the Kings have lost Tyrese Haliburton to a season-ending knee injury. The Kings have also faded from play-in contention.

Fox will still enter the offseason with optimism about the future with the Kings, especially due to Haliburton..

“If we look at where this can go, I mean, for us, we're two guys who are still young, who really haven’t filled their bodies out just yet,” Fox said last week. “The competitors that we are, we want to win right now. But we know that we’re building for something in the future.”

Kings Can't Stretch Payments Over Time To Luke Walton If Fired

May 5, 2021 11:10 AM

Luke Walton does not have a stretch provision in his contract with the Sacramento Kings, which would not allow the team to spread the remaining $11.5 million on his contract over time.

Coaching contracts often include this kind of stretch provision.

The Kings have lost approximately $100 million due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which could factor into their decision making on Walton's future.

Walton maintains a good relationship with Monte McNair and with several key players.

Walton is the fifth head coach of the Kings since Vivek Ranadive bought the team in 2013.
