Heat Hold Magic To Worst Offensive Performance In Seven Years

Oct 30, 2010 10:05 AM

The Heat made a statement with a 96-70 victory over the Magic on Friday night.

Miami led by just six points at halftime, but they opened the third quarter with 14 straight points.

"They came out, they threw an uppercut, and as a team we kind of went down," Magic center Dwight Howard said.

The Heat held Orlando to its lowest point total since Dec. 2, 2005. The 30.4 percent shooting effort was Orlando's worst since Nov. 3, 2003 -- a span of 573 regular-season games.

"The guys now can't go back on this," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "They've shown me what we're capable of defensively and I will hold them to this standard now in terms of the effort. The effort was great."

Magic 'Sick' Of Hearing About Heat

Oct 29, 2010 7:39 AM

The season is only a few days old and the Magic are already tired of hearing about how good the Heat are going to be.

"Honestly, I'm sick of listening every hour about Miami -- Miami that, how great they are, how big they are, what kind of record they gonna have," said center Marcin Gortat.

"I get every day interviews back in Poland, people calling me about Miami, Miami, what you think about Miami? What you think about Big Three? I'm going to say the same thing: they are a great team, they have three superstars, they got a couple good role players on the team.

"They looking good on the paper, but they got to start winning."

The Heat will host the Magic on Friday night.

Magic-Heat Preseason Canceled Due To Slippery Court

Oct 22, 2010 6:55 PM

Tonight's nationally televised preseason game between the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat has been canceled due to conditions on the court.

Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy complained the court was too slippery and so did some of his players.

"An improper cleaning agent was previously applied to the floor," St. Pete Times Forum spokesman Bill Wickett said. "We worked throughout the day utilizing a vinegar-and-water solution to remove that cleaning agent."

The game was to be played at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Magic Wary Of Slippery Court In Tampa

Oct 22, 2010 4:15 PM

The Magic weren't happy with a slippery court that was installed over an NHL ice surface during their shootaround on Friday.

Orlando will face Miami in an exhibition game on Friday in Tampa, Florida.

"The court's not playable in the condition it's in right now," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We're not going to put people out there to get hurt."

The Heat decided to have a morning walkthrough at their hotel rather than travel to the St. Pete Times Forum.

"We'll sometimes do that in hotel ballrooms, which is what I would have done had I known," Van Gundy said. "I mean, we would have just stayed in the hotel because we literally could not do anything. They had the hockey game last night, the condensation on the floor. It's awful."

Nothing Going On Between Pacers, Magic Regarding Bass

Oct 20, 2010 7:41 PM

It has been reported that the Pacers have interest in Magic reserve forward Brandon Bass, but there aren't currently any negotiations going on between the two teams, according to a league source.

Indiana is thin in the frontcourt and Orlando hasn't had much use for Bass, who they signed to a four-year deal before the 2009-10 season.

Bass appeared in just 50 games, including three starts, for the Magic last year while averaging 13.0 minutes per game.

Magic Extend Preseason Winning Streak

Oct 17, 2010 5:43 PM

The Magic defeated the Bulls 105-67 on Saturday night to extend their preseason winning streak to 19 games.

"We're approaching preseason as the regular season, so we don't have to, if you will, change gears," said Vince Carter.

"It's not, 'All right, this is for real, let's go ahead and play for real.' No. That's our approach each and every game."

The Magic haven't lost a preseason game since they were defeated by Atlanta in the 2008 opener.

The Magic thumped the Hornets 135-81 at the new Amway Center on Sunday night.

"I did say in the locker room, very briefly right before we were heading out, that it was a very big night for a lot people in our organization," coach Stan Van Gundy said.

"And we need to honor those people by playing very, very hard. That's all we talked about."

The Magic took a 17-point lead in the first quarter, went ahead by 28 at halftime and 55 in the fourth quarter.

Magic, Mavericks Flirted With Trading For Arenas

Oct 9, 2010 10:14 AM

Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas has looked lost this preseason and has mentioned "moving on" while talking to the press.

Ken Berger of CBS Sports reports that the Magic and Mavericks flirted with the idea of trading for Arenas this summer.

The framework of a trade that would have sent Arenas to Orlando in exchange for Vince Carter was discussed, but the cost and length of the former's contract caused Magic general manager Otis Smith to pass on the deal.

Dallas also thought about pursuing Arenas, but nothing materialized.
