Injury May Sideline Battie For Most Of Season

Sep 28, 2007 8:15 AM

Orlando Magic center/power forward Tony Battie has a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder and could need surgery that would keep him out most of the upcoming season.

Team doctors diagnosed the injury as a partial tear to the rotator cuff last week. Battie was set to see doctors at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina on Thursday for another opinion.

Battie, 31, started all 66 of the games that he played in last season while averaging 6.1 points and 5.2 rebounds a game.

Jameer Nelson Wants To Stay In Orlando

Sep 23, 2007 10:06 AM

Jameer Nelson is at a critical juncture as a player, angling for a new contract with the Magic after turning in a so-so 2006-07 season.

Nelson can become a restricted free agent after season's end if an extension isn't reached by the Oct. 31 deadline. GM Otis Smith doesn't rule out getting a contract done by then. Mountain would be in favor of striking a deal sooner than later, but for now says, "Just say it isn't soup yet."

Nelson shrugs off the contract talk other than to say, "Of course, I want to stay here, but I know it's a business." He prefers to focus on his team -- and the memory of a father whom he says will be a driving force behind a breakout season for him.

Magic's Redick Breaks Hand

Sep 15, 2007 10:45 AM

Orlando Magic shooting guard J.J. Redick has a broken bone in his right hand, but the club expects him to be ready when it begins training camp Sept. 29.

Magic General Manager Otis Smith said Friday he did not know when Redick injured his hand but the 6-foot-5 former Duke All-American has been wearing a soft cast for the last week.

"We're not sure when it happened," Smith said. "It could have happened when he was working out, playing pickup or when he was playing with USA Basketball.

"I don't expect J.J. to miss any time at all. I'd be surprised if he's not ready for camp."

Examiner Rules Death Of Nelson's Father Accidental

Sep 4, 2007 9:29 PM

The Delaware state medical examiner has listed the death of Orlando Magic guard Jameer Nelson's father as accidental.

The body of 57-year-old Floyd "Pete" Nelson was pulled from the Delaware River on Saturday after a boater spotted it near Fox Point Park in Wilmington.

Because the manner of death is listed as accidental, the state medical examiner's office wouldn't disclose the cause of death. Floyd Nelson's identity was confirmed by a scar on his right leg and two partially missing fingers on his left hand. His Social Security card and driver's license also were found in a wallet.

Floyd Nelson, a welder for a tugboat company, was last seen Thursday working in a dry dock area in Chester, Pa.

Police: Body Found Likely To Be That Of Jameer Nelson's Father

Sep 1, 2007 6:25 PM

Authorities pulled a body from the Delaware River on Saturday and there is a "strong likelihood" it is the missing father of Magic star Jameer Nelson, police said.

Floyd "Pete" Nelson, 57, an employee at a tugboat company, was last seen Thursday working in a dry dock area in the Philadelphia suburb of Chester, Pa. Divers and trained dogs searched the river all day Friday but the search was suspended around 4 p.m.

Police in Delaware said a boater called 911 on Saturday after spotting the body of a black male floating in the river near Fox Point Park in Wilmington. The body was recovered around 2 p.m.

There was a "strong likelihood" that the body was Floyd Nelson's but police were unable to confirm it, said Delaware State Police spokesman Sgt. Joshua A. Bushweller.
