Howard leads as Nuggets rout Bulls

Mar 31, 2002 12:37 PM

Denver beat Chicago 100-84, as Juwan Howard had 23 points to help the Nuggets.  Howard and former "Fab Five" teammate Jalen Rose squared off in their first match-up since being traded.

Kenny Satterfield ran the point position well in George McClouds absence.

Williams Open to Return to Chicago

Mar 31, 2002 9:51 AM

Jerry Krause has brought back a few ex-Bulls over the past few years to serve as mentors for his rebuilding team. While Charles Oakley hasn't exactly flourished in that role, former Bull and current Nugget Scott Williams wouldn't mind serving in that capacity next season, reports Mike McGraw of the Daily Herald.

The 34-year-old Williams, who will be a free agent this summer, is on Denver's injured list with a lower back strain. He is healthy enough to play, but the Nuggets want to look at younger players, so Williams likely won't see action the rest of the season.

"This would be an ideal situation if they're thinking about it," said Williams, who plans to play two more years. "I love the city of Chicago. The fans were great to me here when I was just an undrafted rookie trying to scrap for minutes and hustle out there."

Current mentor Charles Oakley wasn't happy about playing for the Bulls this season, but Williams knows his situation is different. Oakley is still trying to earn his first NBA championship, while Williams won three titles with the Bulls from 1991-93.

"Do I want to win? Sure," Williams said. "I was close to getting to the NBA Finals last year with a fun Bucks team. I had a lot of fun up the road. It's important for me to be in a good situation where I'm comfortable, and I certainly would be comfortable here in Chicago."

Drexler Eyes Coaching Gig

Mar 31, 2002 9:37 AM

NBA great Clyde Drexler tried his hand at coaching the college game, an experience that lasted all of two seasons. Now Drexler's goal is to coach an NBA team, writes Milton Kent of the Baltimore Sun.

"For me, it's more of what I would like to do," said Drexler while helping Nuggets players prepare for a game against the Washington Wizards. "Without the academics, without the compliance, without the recruiting, it's just pure men playing basketball. That's more in line with what I'd like to do at this time."

Out of loyalty to current Nuggets interm coach Mike Evans, Drexler won't say that he would like the Denver job, should the Nuggets elect to go in a different direction. But he should be a candidate for some of the possible off-season openings around the league with franchises such as Toronto, Golden State or Milwaukee, if the Bucks continue to slide.

Evans' future uncertain, but he won't leave basketball

Mar 30, 2002 11:33 AM

Mike Evans wants to stay in basketball after this season even if it isn't as the head coach of the Nuggets.

Kyle Ringo writes about the Denver Nuggets interim coaches.  They would like to stay in coaching at the college or NBA level.  Television commentary is also an avenue.

Also of note, George McCloud will probably be sitting out today's game with a deep thigh bruise.  Look for James Posey to come off the injured list and provide another body for the Nuggets off the bench.  Carlos Arroyo and Kenny Satterfield should get the bulk of McCloud's minutes.

Nuggets notes

Mar 30, 2002 11:26 AM

The Denver Nuggets try their luck in the Windy City.  Jalen Rose and the Chicago Bulls are 17-55 for the season and a shoe in for the most ping pong balls (again!) in the upcoming NBA Draft.

The Nuggets have won 3 in a row vs. Chicago, and are 1-12 vs. Eastern Conference teams on the road this season.

On this road trip the Camera article sums up the Nuggets problems in this sentence.

Denver has averaged almost 19 turnovers per game during the road trip, including 21 in its loss to Washington.

Denver returns for a home game on April 2nd.

What will tide over Nugget fans until 2003?

Mar 29, 2002 11:33 AM

Gary Baines writes an article on Denver's rebuilding process.  The Nuggets should get one of the top 7 picks in the upcoming NBA draft.

They are in need of a point guard, and may also make a move to acquire a free angent to help them through next season.  Denver just doesn't want to screw anything up for the 2003 season.  The Nuggets are rumored to be making a run at Jason Kidd, Gary Payton or Tim Duncan at that time.  Thinking the first two will be past their prime, Duncan would be the best choice.  The Nuggets might not have enough to attract Duncan to Denver.

The beats go on: Nuggets lose No. 49

Voshon Lenard scored a team high 25 points for Denver.  Ryan Bowen quietly had a productive stat line, 10 points and 7 rebounds.

James Posey may return for Saturday's game vs. Chicago.  Antonio McDyess returned to the Pepsi Center on Thursday to work out with the trainer.

Harvey reminds Nuggets of McDyess

Mar 28, 2002 11:04 AM

Donnell Harvey has been getting some playing time with the Nuggets.  He's even drawing comparison to the team's franchise player.  Kyle Ringo writes about Harvey's upside.

If he develops a jumpshot between now and next summer, look for this would-be senior in college to bring excitement to the Denver.  He can jump like McDyess, and is the most athletic player on the Nuggets right now.  He just needs the minutes to see if he can develop his game, most noticeably his outside shot.

Kiki Vandeweghe is giving him that confidence.  Let's hope Donnell Harvey can draw more comparison's to Antonio McDyess in the near future.

Williams doesn't bash Bucks

Mar 28, 2002 10:49 AM

Scott Williams has no ill will against the Milwaukee Bucks.  He played a huge role for the Bucks in the playoffs last year.  Williams hooked his career to the rejuvination machine during last year's run.  This year he'll be watching the playoffs from the sidelines, trying to get in shape for another summer camp and hopefully more productive season, somewhere?  Marc Spears gets an article out of the 34 year old reserve.

Williams will remain on the injured list even though he's healthy enough to play.  This gives the Nuggets a chance to play their younger guys.

Scott Williams is a free agent after this season, and may be in Denver's camp, or Milwaukee's.  He has good things to say about both franchises.  His best quote on the Nuggets was:

"I played well there (Milwaukee), and it's possible they may have some interest," Williams said. "But I kind of feel that in life sometimes you want to move forward. And for me right now, the Denver Nuggets has been a good organization. Although I've said that the events that have happened this year have been difficult, I honestly believe that this organization is moving in a positive direction."

Nuggets-Bucks preview

Mar 28, 2002 10:40 AM

The Nuggets travel to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks.  This is the longest road trip of the year for Denver.  James Posey may be activated from the injured list before this game.

Ray Allen, who was en fuego when he played the Nuggets in Denver, is listed as day to day because of his knee.  He didn't play Tuesday vs. Dallas.
