Marcus Smart Admits That Celtics Were 'Dysfunctional'

Jul 30, 2019 1:34 AM

Marcus Smart opened up about an underwhelming Boston Celtics season during an appearance on ESPN's The Jump.

“Let's call a spade a spade, right? It’s true. We were dysfunctional...We all took part in it," said Smart

Smart also discussed Kyrie Irving's impact on the team, spreading the blame for the disappointment beyond Irving.

"He didn’t play up to the standard that he wanted to. But there’s four other guys out there with him, there’s a coach out there. We’re all supposed to be one team so you just can’t put the blame on one guy. Everyone could have done better, to not just help Kyrie but help the team and help each other.”

Celtics 'Stomped Their Feet About Tampering' On Al Horford

Jul 18, 2019 6:55 PM

The Boston Celtics have concerns about potential tampering on Al Horford ahead of free agency. The Celtics expected to negotiate a new deal with Horford when he opted out of his contract for the 19-20 season, but talks quickly broke down. Horford eventually signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.

"I don't know if you heard this, but the Celtics were, from what I am told, one of the teams that kind of stomped their feet about what they felt was tampering," said Brian Windhorst on The Hoop Collective Podcast. "Not with Kyrie, although that looked like it was lined up pretty far in advance, but with Horford.

"What happened with Horford, again from what I'm told, really upset the Celtics. They were thinking they were going to be able to negotiate with him. Talk to him about a new contract and all of a sudden it was like he already knew what his market was and he was out of there."

Jackie MacMullan countered that the Celtics had plenty of time to work on a new deal with Horford if they wanted to keep him.

"They were as surprised as we were that the money was available to Horford for the four-year deal they got," said MacMullan. "As you know, subsequent reporting revealed that the fourth year is not completely guaranteed because at the time, Elton Brand was getting killed for that deal. He was getting killed because the fourth year was being reported as guaranteed, but it isn't."

The Celtics similarly had a deal basically done with Kemba Walker before the start of free agency.

Danny Ainge Believes Kyrie Irving Preferred Nets Over Knicks As Early As March

Jul 18, 2019 6:07 PM

Danny Ainge began to believe Kyrie Irving was prepared to leave the Boston Celtics for the Brooklyn Nets as soon as March.

“He did express to me on a couple of occasions between March and the end of (the year) that he really wanted to go home,” Ainge said. “I got the impression at that point that he wanted to play in Brooklyn more than he wanted to play in New York.”

Ainge later called back the radio station to clarify what he meant.

“I did not say he said he was gone in March,” Ainge said. “He said the possibility of being gone was there, not that he was going to leave. There was still a strong possibility of him staying in Boston."

Ainge also said he asked Irving directly if he would still consider re-signing with the Celtics.

“I asked him point-blank in the conversations I had with him, would you consider coming back to Boston? And he was always yes, he was always in that frame of mind. I don’t think he was out the door for sure by then. I think he was contemplating all his options. But I do think he preferred Brooklyn over New York in that moment, to me.”
