Kyrie Irving: You Can't Put A Price On Happiness

Sep 18, 2017 2:40 PM

Kyrie Irving went on ESPN's "First Take" on Monday and was asked about why he wanted to be traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"I want to be extremely, extremely happy in perfecting my craft and that was the only intent I had in all of this,” Irving said. “You can't put a price on happiness.”

Irving was also asked why he didn't communicate his intentions with LeBron James.

"I don't think you owe anything to another person in terms of figuring out what you want to do with your life,” he said. “It’s not anything personal, I'm not here to tirade anybody or to go at any particular person or the organization because I have nothing but love for Cleveland. I have nothing but love for the time I spent there. It's nothing about that. There comes a time where you mature as an individual, it's time to make that decision. And there is no looking back from that standpoint. There is no time to figure out how to save somebody's feelings when ultimately you have to be selfish in figuring out what you want to do.”

Jaylen Brown Seeking Active Role In Union

Sep 17, 2017 2:53 PM

Following the retirement of James Jones, the Players Association is seeking another member for the executive committee.

The NBPA could elect another member during their meeting in Los Angeles during All-Star Weekend.

Jaylen Brown could be a candidate as he has shown desire to become a player rep and play an active role in the union.

The Celtics will need to appoint a new player rep following the departure of Kelly Olynyk to the Heat.

Danny Ainge: Celtics Didn't Plan On Making So Many Changes

Sep 17, 2017 2:38 PM

The Boston Celtics will enter training camp with potentially 11 new players as they've overturned their roster this offseason.

Most notably, the Celtics acquired Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving while losing the likes of Avery Bradley, Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder.

“This isn’t any sort of plan like we wanted to make a whole bunch of changes — part of it is just managing payroll and getting guys to fit on the court, just building a team,” Danny Ainge said. “It’s not about getting rid of somebody or bringing new faces in, but in the world we live in today you have a salary cap and a luxury tax and there are short contracts that are attached. When I played, I signed a six-year contract. Now, most contracts are four years [at the longest]. It’s just the nature of our business and it’s not ideal not to have continuity. But there are rewards for a freshness. What really matters is how well they play and as I said, time is our judge.”

The Celtics have been ahead of schedule in their rebuild but they felt like they needed significant changes to become true title contenders.

“I’m excited, no question, as I said, you can feel it,” Ainge said. “You can feel the energy here at our practice facility, you can see it in guys that are trying out for the [G-League], guys that are going to play major roles on our team this year, young and old, you can just see the energy that exists around here and it’s good. It’s exciting. I’m excited to get the season started and see how it all works.”

Terry Rozier Was Confident Celtics Wouldn't Trade Him

Sep 10, 2017 10:09 AM

Terry Rozier has been the subject of trade interest during his time with the Boston Celtics, but Danny Ainge has so far resisted including him any deals.

Rozier was reportedly a sticking point in several rumored trades.

Rozier was asked if he was ever worried the Celtics would trade him this summer as they have reshaped their roster.

"Nah, Danny won't trade me," said Rozier with a laugh.

Rozier is entering his third season with the Celtics and saw an increased role in 16-17.

Chris Paul Told Celtics, Warriors He Wouldn't Re-Sign During 2011 Trade Talks

Sep 8, 2017 6:57 PM

The Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors pursued a trade for Chris Paul in 2011 when he was put on the trade market by the New Orleans Pelicans.

Paul preferred a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers but ended up being traded to the Los Angeles Clippers.

"When Chris Paul was in New Orleans, there were two teams that wanted to be aggressive in trading for him and he said 'I will not re-sign with you,'" said Wojnarowski about the Celtics and Warriors.

The Celtics attempted to acquire Paul by trading Rajon Rondo to the Pelicans. The advanced age of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce was a significant reason why Paul didn't want to join the Celtics.

Jae Crowder Informed Mother Of Trade Minutes Before She Passed Away

Sep 7, 2017 6:15 PM

Jae Crowder informed his mother that he had been traded by the Boston Celtics to the Cleveland Cavaliers shortly before she passed away from cancer at the age of 51.

"There was a lot going on that day, obviously," Crowder told reporters in Cleveland during his introductory press conference. "The good thing about the whole ordeal was I was able to whisper it to my mom before she passed. I was with her. I just told her, 'We're going to Cleveland.' Five minutes later, she passed. That day was tough, but it was a good day for myself, for my basketball career, to move on to an organization like this, like the Cleveland Cavaliers, to put myself in a position to play for it all. I couldn't ask myself for nothing else. I was thankful for Boston, for everything they've done for me, and for trading me to a team like this. I was thankful for the opportunity. But that day was pretty wild."

Crowder is looking forward to his new opportunity with the Cavaliers.

"I was a little concerned," he said. "We had a lot of wing players stacked up. It was a little concerning. I made it clear to the organization that I was concerned about it and just wanted more direction. I think they gave it to me with the trade. They showed me what they wanted to do. I respected it."

Isaiah Thomas: Fans Need To Fix Perspective On Who Has Power

Sep 6, 2017 1:31 PM

In a first person essay for The Players' Tribune, Isaiah Thomas wrote about how players don't have as much power as many believe in terms of choosing where to play.

Thomas was traded by the Boston Celtics to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a surprising move.

"Plus, in a lot of ways, I actually think this was a good lesson," wrote Thomas. "Not only for me, but for the league as a whole. And for the fans and the media, too, you know, just in terms of how they talk about guys changing teams. I was thinking about that last year with KD (Kevin Durant) and his free agency — about how people gave him such a hard time for doing what he felt was best for him and his future. How they turned him into a villain, just for doing what was his right to do as a free agent in this league. Suddenly, it was, “Oh, he’s selfish,” or, “Oh, he’s a coward.” Suddenly, just for doing business on his end, and doing right by himself, he was portrayed as this bad guy.

"But that’s what I think my trade can show people. I want them to see how my getting traded — just like that, without any warning — by the franchise that I scratched and clawed for, and bled for, and put my everything on the line for? That’s why people need to fix their perspective. It’s like, man — with a few exceptions, unless we’re free agents, 99 times out of 100, it’s the owners with the power. So when players are getting moved left and right, and having their lives changed without any say-so, and it’s no big deal … but then the handful of times it flips, and the player has control … then it’s some scandal? Just being honest, but — to me, that says a lot about where we are as a league, and even as a society. And it says a lot about how far we still have to go.

"And like I said, there’s no hard feelings. But I just hope that the next time a player leaves in free agency, and anybody wants to jump on him or write a critical story or a nasty tweet about him, maybe now they’ll think twice. Maybe they’ll look around the league, look at a case like mine, and remember that loyalty — it’s just a word. And it’s a powerful word if you want it to be. But man … when it comes to business, it ain’t nothing to count on.

"At the same time, though, people gotta understand. Like, even with all of this being said … man … it still hurt. It still hurt bad. And I hope people can understand that when I say it hurt, it isn’t directed at anyone. I’m not saying I was hurt by anyone, or wronged by anyone, or betrayed. I’m just saying, man, I’m only human. I may act like a tough guy on the court. And I may seem like I have ice in my veins when I’m competing. But at the same time — it ain’t ice, really. I got blood and I got a heart like everyone else."

Celtics Leaning Towards Starting Al Horford At Center

Sep 6, 2017 11:30 AM

Al Horford has traditionally preferred to play power forward, but he may need to start and close games at center for the Boston Celtics.

The Celtics' optimal lineups would have Horford at center instead of Aron Baynes in order to have some combination of Gordon Hayward, Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Morris on the floor at the 2-4 positions.

"I do think they're going to start Horford at center, which is interesting," Lowe said. "I think organizationally, that's the way they're leaning."

The Celtics lost one of their versatile players in trading Jae Crowder to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
