Chris Finch Planning To Be With Timberwolves For Game 1

May 2, 2024 12:58 AM

Chris Finch is planning to be on the Minnesota Timberwolves' sideline for Game 1 of their series against the Denver Nuggets.

Finch had surgery to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee on Wednesday.

Assistant Micah Nori is taking over head coaching duties in Finch's absence.

Due to a lack of spacing on the bench, Finch may switch seats with athletic trainer Gregg Farnam on the sideline for increased leg room.

Jimmy Butler Eligible To Sign Two-Year, $112.9M Extension With Heat On July 7

May 1, 2024 10:33 PM

Jimmy Butler becomes eligible to sign a contract extension with the Miami Heat this offseason on July 7th. Butler is signed for 24-25 at $48.8 million and holds a $52.4 million player option for 25-26.

Butler could sign a one-year extension for 26-27 at $58.6 million, or he could sign a two-year, $112.9 million option that covers both 25-26 and 26-27, which would void his $52.4 million option for 25-26.

Butler signed a four-year, $184 million extension with the Heat during the 2021 offseason after Year 2 of his four-year, $142 million deal signed in 2019.

Butler will turn 35 before the start of the 24-25 season.

Mat Ishbia: The House Is Not On Fire, We're In A Great Position

May 1, 2024 10:16 PM

Mat Ishbia addressed the media on Wednesday, but he said he has yet to begin his assessment of the Phoenix Suns following their first round sweep by the Minnesota Timberwolves. The future of Frank Vogel as head coach is uncertain and Ishbia declined to say whether he would remain in the job next season.

"We're going to evaluate everything," Ishbia said. "... Everything is on the table to evaluate. We have just not started it."

The Suns reached The Finals in 2021, won 64 games in 21-22 before a surprising second round exit against the Dallas Mavericks, lost in six games to the Denver Nuggets in 2023 before their first round exit in 2024.

"I love that people are frustrated that we didn't win an NBA championship, because, guess what? So are we," he said. "... I'm happy where we're at, from that perspective, that people are disappointed, because, guess what, there's not someone in the organization that's more disappointed than me, my GM, my CEO, my players, my coach. Everyone's disappointed, just like the fans. Guess what? I'm going to own the team for 50 years, and probably 45, 46, 47 of those years, we'll probably have the same conversation -- like, hey, we didn't win the championship, and we're going to be disappointed then, too. That's how it's going to be, and I love it."

The widely held belief about the Suns is that the NBA's punitive second luxury tax apron and their lack of future draft assets will make it difficult for the roster to improve.

"I feel like the narrative around [here is] the house is burning, it's incorrect," Ishbia said. "... Fans like to look in the future and say, 'Hey, I really like that 2031 draft pick because maybe that seventh grader is going to be really good and we're going to draft him and one day he's going to be a player.'"

He later added, "Five in the next eight years, we have a first-round draft pick. I know that's not a cool thing to say out there because people like to say their narratives that we have no draft picks, but we have five in the next eight years and we can trade two of 'em next month if we want. So it is not like people say we have no flexibility."

Ishbia believes health and the newness of their team are "extremely fixable."

"Let's be real -- ask the other 29 GMs [in the NBA], 26 of them would trade their whole team for our whole team and our draft picks as is," Ishbia said. "The house is not on fire. We're in a great position. It's not hard to fix. We have enough talent to win a championship."

Pelicans Encouraged By Zion Williamson's 'Progress With Mental, Physical State'

May 1, 2024 10:02 PM

Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans enter the 2024 offseason in a much better place compared to where they were last year. While sources tell The Athletic that Williamson was never included in any official trade offers, the Pelicans didn't express any urgency in denying rumors about his availability. The Pelicans were strongly linked with Scoot Henderson leading to the draft.

Sources also tell The Athletic that the Pelicans were "impressed by the progress Williamson made with his mental and physical state" before he suffered a hamstring injury in the fourth quarter of their play-in game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Williamson remained engaged with teammates following the injury and was in the best shape of his NBA career.

During the previous offseason, the Pelicans hired Amy Atmore as director of rehabilitation. She worked with Williamson and other players on a more day-to-day basis, which contributed to him playing in a career-high 70 games. Williamson's relationship with Aaron Nelson, who was previously the head of the training staff, had "grown frigid over time."

Brandon Ingram is entering the final season of his contract with the Pelicans and his future with the franchise is believed to be far less certain than Williamson.

May 1, 2024 12:40 PM

The Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award recognizes the player deemed the best teammate based on selfless play, on- and off-court leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment and dedication to team.

Conley finished first ahead of Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson.

Jrue Holiday had won the award three out of the past four seasons.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard 'Very Close' To Return, Could Play Game 6

May 1, 2024 10:14 AM

The Milwaukee Bucks staved off elimination in Game 5, beating the Indiana Pacers 115-92. The Bucks won the game without both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, who are both currently injured. The win was the first in NBA history for a team without their two top scorers from the regular season.

Antetokounmpo and Lillard have a chance to return for Game 6 at Indiana.

Doc Rivers said both players are scheduled to work out on the court during the off day Wednesday.

"I think they're very, very, very close," Rivers said.

Playing With Bronny No Longer The Priority For LeBron James

May 1, 2024 9:44 AM

There's been a lot made about LeBron James desire to play with his son Bronny in the NBA. The elder James once said that was a goal of his before his career ends. Now, it seems like both father and son, and their representatives, are focused on each having success independently.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that after conversations with Rich Paul, he no longer believes that LeBron James is insisting he has to play with Bronny.

"The idea of them playing together is not a priority, it's not foremost, at least any longer, in LeBron James' mind," Wojnarowski reported.

That seems to indicate that LeBron James and his agent Rich Paul will do what's best for him without forcing a team to draft his son in the 2024 NBA Draft.

As for Bronny James, the priority is to get him in the best situation for his own development.

"Rich Paul's goal here in the pre-draft process for Bronny James is to see if there's the right developmental system or organization, a place that can take a young player like Bronny James, who went five months without playing after his heart episode certainly limited him in his season at USC," Wojnarowski said. "If he does go in the draft, he very likely would spend next year in the G League."
