Glover signs with Raptors

Feb 29, 2004 9:17 AM

Dion Glover has found a home. A day after clearing waivers, the former Hawks guard signed a contract with the Toronto Raptors for the rest of the season. Glover asked for his release from the Hawks Wednesday with the intent of joining a contender.

"They're going to make the playoffs, and I've never had the chance at the playoffs in Atlanta," Glover told reporters in Toronto.

Raptors sign Dion Glover

Feb 28, 2004 7:48 PM

TORONTO (AP) The Toronto Raptors signed free agent guard Dion Glover for the remainder of the season on Saturday.

Glover averaged 10.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 55 games with Atlanta. The Hawks waived him on Feb. 25, after he asked to be released.

Glover considered signing with Toronto as a free agent last summer.

``They are trying to make the playoffs, and I've never had the chance at the playoffs in Atlanta,'' Glover said.

Toronto is in danger of falling out of the playoff race after losing Vince Carter, Jalen Rose and Alvin Williams to injuries.

Carter is expected to miss at least one more game because of a sprained left ankle, Rose is out at least a month with four broken bones in his left hand and Williams was placed on the injured list on Saturday after undergoing surgery to relieve inflammation in his right knee on Friday.

``They need somebody to play defense and somebody to make offensive plays until they get back,'' Glover said.

Glover, a 6-foot-5 guard from Georgia Tech, was the Hawks' No. 1 draft pick in 1999, 20th overall. In five seasons, he averaged 8.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 273 games with 101 starts.

``Obviously, with Vince and Jalen and Alvin out I guess the thinking was to add some scoring,'' Toronto coach Kevin O'Neill said. ``He's not going to know any plays, but hopefully he'll give us a bit of scoring.''

The Raptors also waived forward Lonny Baxter, who was acquired from Chicago in a six-player trade Dec. 1. The 6-7 Baxter averaged 4.2 points 3.4 rebounds in 36 games with Toronto.

Williams out with sore right knee

Feb 25, 2004 9:03 PM

TORONTO (AP) Toronto Raptors guard Alvin Williams missed Wednesday night's game against the Washington Wizards with a sore right knee.

Williams also missed Tuesday night's game against New Jersey, and it does not sound as though he will be playing soon.

``It's just not responding to anything,'' said Williams, who had surgery on the knee two years ago.

Williams said another surgery is a final option. He said the knee has bothered him all season, but has worsened in recent days.

``I'll die on the court. That's what I want to do. I want to play. If I can't walk at 50 years old that's something I'll deal with then,'' Williams said. ``It's the only thing I've ever loved. It's the only thing I've had passion for.''

Williams is averaging 8.9 points and 4.1 assists this season.

The Raptors are also without Jalen Rose and Vince Carter, who are both on the injured list.

Raptors suspend Murray for one game

Feb 21, 2004 8:10 PM

TORONTO (AP) The Toronto Raptors suspended disgruntled forward Lamond Murray for Sunday's game against Sacramento, one day after he criticized coach Kevin O'Neill.

In a statement released Saturday, the Raptors said Murray was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team.

Murray ripped O'Neill after playing just six minutes in Toronto's 91-72 loss to the New Jersey Nets on Friday night.

O'Neill inserted Murray into the starting lineup because of injuries to Vince Carter and Jalen Rose, but yanked him after he allowed Richard Jefferson to go 3-for-3 from the field.

Murray, who was disappointed that he was not traded before the deadline, said he got no explanation from O'Neill on why he didn't play more.

``Come on, we don't talk,'' Murray said. ``There's no communication. It's just who I am, and he doesn't like who I am for some reason. They should have let me go. They had a time to let me go. I'm past frustrated now. I'm past trying to play it his way, and play great defense.''

He said he thought it was personal.

``What else could it be?'' Murray said. ``It's just petty. There's no reason for it. I've tried to be as professional as I can.''

Carter placed on injured list

Feb 20, 2004 9:53 PM

TORONTO (AP) All-Star guard Vince Carter was placed on the injured list by the Toronto Raptors on Friday with a sprained left ankle.

Carter is expected be out two to four weeks, Raptors coach Kevin O'Neill said Thursday.

Carter was hurt in the fourth quarter of Toronto's 86-82 loss to San Antonio on Wednesday night and had to use crutches after the game.

An MRI exam Thursday showed he had a moderate ankle sprain.

Carter, who missed the final six games of last season after rolling the same ankle, is averaging 21.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists. He missed a career-high 39 games in three stints on the injured list last season.

The Raptors are already missing Jalen Rose, who has four broken bones in his left hand, and rookie center Chris Bosh, who re-sprained his left ankle Wednesday.

Toronto activated forward Michael Bradley from the injured list. He hasn't played this season because of right knee tendinitis.

Coach: Carter out two to four weeks with ankle sprain

Feb 19, 2004 7:18 PM

TORONTO (AP) All-Star guard Vince Carter will be sidelined for two to four weeks with a sprained left ankle, Raptors coach Kevin O'Neill said Thursday.

Carter was hurt in the fourth quarter of Toronto's 86-82 loss to San Antonio on Wednesday night and had to use crutches after the game.

An MRI exam Thursday showed he had a moderate ankle sprain.

``It will be a while,'' O'Neill said about how long Carter will sit out.

The Raptors are already missing Jalen Rose, who has four broken bones in his left hand, and rookie center Chris Bosh, who re-sprained his left ankle Wednesday.

The Raptors (25-28) were clinging to a playoff position heading into Friday night's game against the New Jersey Nets, the winners of a franchise-record-tying 11 straight games.

``We have to find a way anyway,'' O'Neill said of the playoff race. ``We would have gotten in had we not had injuries.''
